10 Tips To Build, Manage And Profit From An E-Commerce Website

May 31st, 2007

Just because you’ve built your e-commerce website doesn’t mean the customers will begin to come. You need to bring in the visitors, showcase your products, convince them to buy, and bring them back yet again to make any significant gains.

The customers need to be wooed by the unique customer experience that will bring them back, and have them sing your praise to their friends, spreading your name. This may seem like a tall order, but isn’t. Listed here are the top ten tips to build, manage and profit from your e-commerce website. Follow them and see the benefits for yourself.

1. Organize your Catalog around Product Categories

Many sites either provide a long list of products or lump them behind a search button, making it difficult to find them. Arrange your products into logical categories and subcategories, but do not overdo it. Research says it that most people get overwhelmed with more than 7 categories. The customer must be able to easily search any product without help.

Your product should have a clear and high-quality picture, short and detailed specifications. If necessary add video or pictures of different view points (top angle, side view) along with the product specification.

2. Provide Multiple Payment Options

Keep all kinds of payment options available to your customers. Not everyone feels comfortable buying through a credit card, or has one. Allow for debit cards, fax, telephone, snail mail, paper and electronic cheques. And sign-up for fraud checking facility, without which you could easily end up losing entire day’s sales within minutes. Provide a currency converter if you offer products or payment in other currencies.

Including a telephone number for customer support on the order is a must. It gives the buyers some extra feelings of security that they can always talk to a live person if anything goes wrong in the buying process.

3. List out Clearly Outlined Policies

Privacy:

Make your privacy policy public. Keep it in a prominent place, and link it to the home, products and checkout pages, so that customers who are vary of providing personal and credit card details feel comforted. Tell them if you plan to share their email address with others, or plan to send in promotional mail or newsletters.

Further, allow them to unsubscribe or opt-out of such email if they think so. Never sell the customer’s personal particulars unless they have agreed, as this is a sure way to lose credibility doubly fast.

Security:

If you plan to collect sensitive information from your customers, you should use security systems like SSL (Secure Socket Layer). This guarantees that the data provided by your customer will not fall into the hand of a malicious hacker while transferring from his computer to the web server.

This also will reassure your customers that you are truly concerned about the security of their personal information.

Terms and Conditions:

Write clearly and prominently all the sales and after sales support terms so as to avoid confusion. The internet is worldwide, and your customer can come from any country. List your shipping and handling costs upfront, and be ready to ship anywhere on the Earth. Publish your returns policy, support hours, and even the approximate time taken to deliver the goods.

Send a confirmation note thanking the customer, and listing all the products, prices and key terms of the purchase in an email. Keep the customer updated of the order status at all times by email or by providing a link in your shopping page where they can check the status of their order anytime.

4. Build a Newsletter Around Your Products

To snag new customers and keep the old ones remembering you vividly, seriously plan to launch a newsletter, and send it to all prospects and customers on a regular basis. Apart from the credibility of being a serious player in the market, you dazzle them with your commitment by releasing the newsletter on fixed days - like 15th of every month, or every Monday.

You can also show your expertise in your field by writing regular, in-depth articles, covering the latest trends in the industry, and reviews of new products. Your customers, distributors, and partners will start to eagerly await your newsletter. Sprinkle your promotions and products in between the contents of the newsletter, and be ready to receive an increase in web traffic and order bookings every time you send out the newsletter.

5. Let Customers Gift Your Products

Allow people to gift your products to their friends and loved ones. Provide free gift wrapping, a personalized message or a free gift for the purchaser. Allow them to create Wish Lists that they may use to buy later.

These small things do matter and act as freebies that your competitor may not have. Although these are fast becoming standard feature, make sure you don’t end up with the dumb ones who haven’t figured this simple technique out yet.

6. Promote your Site Every Day

Strong marketing is the most important aspect of having a successful website. The best of sites won’t make money if people don’t come in hordes. Launch promotions, and get the word to everyone possible within your target audience.

You can do promotions using direct mail to your existing customer, in your newsletter, and fliers. All the methods of traditional marketing apply here. Don’t leave any technique untried. Remember the old adage - Market, market, market.

7. Measure Results and Reorganize

Measure the results you are getting from each promotion religiously, and note what works and what doesn’t. Experiment. Study. Fine tune. This is the only way to know how effective your campaigns and promotions are.

You can also bring in some external people to visit your site and give you sincere feedback about each page on your site. The more critical they are, the more changes you will make, and eventually it will benefit you and your customers.

Keep making changes and test what works and what doesn’t on a continuous basis. What works today may not work tomorrow.

8. Keep a Simple yet Effective Web Design

There is intense competition on the web. Make a compelling website that showcases your USP (unique selling proposition) and brings the customer back to your site. Differentiate from the rest by using your imagination to make your site standout from the rest. A cool, cathy, easy to remember name could definitely help.

Make a simple site, with plain HTML, and a consistent look and feel on all pages. Use an easy to read font, at least a 10 size font, preferably 11. Do not load with graphics and huge pictures on every page, which may slow down your page.

Although this advice is becoming old fashioned as most people are moving to broadband, it is still a good practice, as you don’t want to lose the customers who use a low speed modem.

Flexibility and ease of use are far more important than flashy graphics or cool Java applets. The objective is to keep the customer looking at the products, and not keep them waiting or lose them by slow loading graphics or effects.

Keep the catalog simple, and with a consistent design with links to Home, Checkout page, Privacy Policy, Terms and Conditions, Customer Profile pages handy and at the same, consistent place on each page. Make it easy to browse the store and mark products for later purchase.

9. Make the Login Process a Breeze

The less clicks needed to order, the better. Amazon patented their One-Click method that minimized the clicks, making the checkout process simpler and easier. Try to make the registration or login process minimal, and only keep the most relevant fields mandatory.

I was disgusted by the lengthy logon process which forced me to enter my middle name, date of birth, and mother’s maiden name for just registering for an online taxi booking service. I left it mid way, and went to another taxi operator’s site, which registered me within a minute. A simple thing can result in a costly mistake that loses the customer forever.

10. Reduce Popup Messages

Too many popups distract and disgust the customer. Especially after the visitor closes your website window, if you start to popup other windows with more promotions, it leaves a feeling of being chased. It is also the signature of most of the adult sites, so steer away from such insensitive practices.

Show your professionalism and respect the customer’s privacy and time. It will help to build your image as a serious and professional site and enhance your credibility.

11. Use a Reliable Hosting Service

Use a service that is good, reliable, and can provide you with customer support at all hours. Web hosting is getting very cheap but it is better to pay a little more and get a fast and reliable web hosting. Nothing loses a customer faster than a slow site or a site that is down frequently. Compare a few hosting services, and ask around before signing up for one. You won’t regret it.

Art of Conversation Made Easy

May 31st, 2007

The art of conversation comes so easily to some, but for others
it is a real struggle. Learning how to get past those things
that stand in your way are the first step to learning the art of
communication.

There are three common reasons why people tend to feel
uncomfortable about conversation. The following list explains
these reasons and how to overcome them so you can be a master of
conversation.

1. Fear.

Many people fear others will think they are not intelligent or
that they do not belong in the conversation. First of all you
must recognize that many others feel the same way. You need to
be confident about yourself. The best way to do this is to talk
about things you know about.

If you try to join a discussion where you have no idea what they
are talking about you may end up looking ignorant. Even in these
cases, though, there is a way to avoid feeling bad. You just
need to ask questions. Questions are the best way to learn and
others will appreciate the fact that you are interested enough
to learn about what interests them.

2. Nothing to say.

Starting a conversation may seem difficult, but it doesn’t have
to be. The best way to start a conversation is to talk about
something that everyone can relate to. Some good conversation
topics include, pet peeves, asking about family or employment
and talking about current events.

Finding common ground brings everyone into the conversation and
leads to great communication. If you are worried about
conversation suddenly stopping or not being able to find
something to continue talking about then use these same tips.

Bring up a new topic. Ask questions about the old topic. Just
keep the tone friendly and you should be able to continue the
conversation easily.

3. Offending someone.

Sometimes we worry that we will say something wrong and offend
someone. For example, we make a comment about a certain
profession only to find out someone in the group is in that
profession.

The best way to avoid these mishaps are to not say negative
things. Simply keep your comments complementary. Do not talk
about hot button issues like religion and politics. Also avoid
anything that could be seen as racist or prejudice.

These three things are the main reason why many people avoid
conversation all together. Communication is essential to social
and emotional growth. To avoid a good conversation is only
damaging to you.

You can overcome these worries and fears to master the art of
conversation Just follow the tips above and you should see that
the art of conversation is nothing to be afraid of or to avoid.
It can open up new worlds to you and create many long lasting
relationships.

New Bankruptcy Law – Where’s the Consumer Protection?

May 31st, 2007

On April 20, 2005, President Bush signed into law the Bankruptcy Abuse and Consumer Protection Act, a piece of sweeping legislation that brought about the most sweeping changes in personal bankruptcy law in the last quarter century. This bill, which takes effect in October 2005, passed with the overwhelming support of both parties of congress, claims, through its very name, to offer “consumer protection.” Does it? How are consumers “protected” by this bill?

The purpose of the new legislation, is to eliminate “bankruptcy of convenience”. Sponsors of the bill allege that most consumer bankruptcy cases involve irresponsible spenders who have shopped or gambled their money away and now do not wish to pay their creditors. They rightly point out that bankruptcy costs the credit card companies billions of dollars each year and that those costs are passed on to consumers in the form of higher interest rates. By making it harder for those with problem debt to file for bankruptcy, legislators say that more people will pay their bills, the credit card companies will save billions of dollars, and the resulting savings will be passed on to consumers in the form of lower interest rates.

The bill is lengthy, but key points are as follows:

  • Those considering bankruptcy will have to pass a “means test.” If their income is above a certain threshold, they will not be able to file under Chapter 7 of the Federal bankruptcy code, which wipes out debt and gives the debtor a fresh start. Instead, they will have to file under Chapter 13, which establishes a five year repayment plan.
  • There are no provisions in the law for debt problems caused by job loss, illness or other traumatic events, despite studies that show that these are the cause of most bankruptcy cases.
  • Attorneys will now be responsible for the accuracy of paperwork filed by their clients. This will probably result in fewer bankruptcy attorneys, with those that continue to practice raising their fees substantially in order to offset their additional liability.
  • In short, most consumers are no longer protected from job loss or illness by being able to file under Chapter 7 and they will have less help from competent attorneys due to the new liability provision of the bill. There is little to “protect” consumers in the Bankruptcy Abuse and Consumer Protection Act. The sole benefit for consumers resulting from this bill will be lower interest rates and fees from the credit card companies, who will save billions of dollars as a result of this legislation. Of course, should the credit card companies choose to keep the savings, rather than pass them on to their customers, then consumers will be left with no benefit or “protection” at all.

    Just The Fax, M’am

    May 31st, 2007

For years, I smugly prided myself as a non-fax machine person. I felt it beneath my dignity to own such a technical contraption. The quill is more my style than a computer but, being practical, I reluctantly use a computer, casting wistful glances at the dust gathering on my quill.

Unfortunately, in the world in which we live, it is necessary to fax some letters or documents to someone in some odd part of the world. I don’t like it, but that’s just the way it is.

On the rare occasion when I must fax some document at an office supply store, I usually sneak in the back way. It has been my experience, when the fax man seeth me cometh, he always raises the price per page. This is just a small service he does for Yours Truly.

Then, when paying for this service, the fax man usually says with an impish grin, “When are you going to get a fax machine of your own?”

I always flash a smile back at him, but if he knew the thoughts in my head, he would charge me more per page. Silence truly is golden, especially for the person exercising the virtue.

Actually, I don’t trust machines. I know a mind somewhere is controlling all of these machines — a menacing, mischievous mind dedicated to the simple task of messing up my life.

When I eventually break down and buy a fax machine someone will invent something to replace it and I’ll have another antique on my hands to put alongside of my Underwood typewriter and boxes of 8-track tapes.

This notwithstanding, I ended up buying a fax machine several weeks ago. I didn’t want to, but I had no choice in the matter.

My printer finally went the way of all printers. I hated to see it go. The left side was cracked where Noah, the original owner, dropped it. For years, it served me quite well. My next printer will have a big ink cartridge to fill.

I hate buying replacement equipment. Rarely is the new any better than the old, just more expensive, not to mention complicated. But, necessity is the stepmother of all complications in life, and I set out to buy a new printer.

I resolutely did not want to buy a fax machine. Under no circumstance did I want to buy a fax machine. Therefore, I ended up buying a fax machine.

It is impossible to buy a printer anymore. In order to buy a printer you must

buy a machine that prints/copies/scans/faxes. I think it’s a pretty sneaky way to get me to buy a fax machine. Someone “out there” is set on me owning a fax machine even though I don’t want to own one.

This new machine does everything but vacuum the interior of my car. But it was the cheapest machine I could find.

I bought the machine but determined not to use the fax part. After all, somebody has to stand up for what they believe. Not everybody should succumb to the latest trend.

I was doing fine until ending up in the hospital. When I got out, I needed to fax a document to the hospital. Now I faced a taxing dilemma.

Do I go to the office store and fax my document, or do I try out my new printer/copier/scanner/fax machine?

Precedence finally gave way to convenience. I took my document to my new machine and figured out how to fax it to the hospital.

Not being confident in my technical knowledge, I called the hospital office to check on the faxed document. Much to my surprise the person on the other end said in a very cheery voice, “Yes, I have the faxed document right here in my hand.”

I must admit, although I hate doing so, faxing from my house was much easier than going to the office store.

I now knew how to fax a document anywhere in the world, but I had nothing to fax to anyone in the world. I just stood there looking at my machine trying to think of something to fax.

Even though I knew how to fax a document, I still did not know how to receive a fax.

Several days ago, a friend called and said he had a document he wanted me to have right away. He then asked the ominous question, “Do you have a fax machine?”

I began to say no, but hesitated and confessed I had a fax machine but did not know how to receive faxes. It was humiliating to make such a confession, but it was true.

“It’s simple,” he said, “hang up the phone and I’ll dial again and let the machines talk to one another.”

This caused no small discomfort. To think these machines are talking to one another behind my back is most disturbing. What are they saying about me behind my back?

Now that I come to think about it, I have heard sounds similar to snickering coming from the general direction of my printer/scanner/copier/fax machine. I don’t mind Big Brother watching over me, but I do mind some machine making jokes with other machines about me.

When it comes to “new things,” God is the master. This is what He promises to do for us. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV.)

Put that in your printer and fax it.

    GPS Buying Tips For Technophobes

    May 31st, 2007

Black glasses with masking tape holding them together and a pocket protector are no longer a required part of the uniform for GPS owners. GPS has gone mainstream. But if you’re still not up to date on what it is and how it works, and if you’d like some advice on what to buy, this article will bring you up to speed.

A GPS device is like a map on steroids. First of all, it always gives you that little “You Are Here” dot – you no longer need to figure that out for yourself. And all you need to do is tell it where you want to go and it will plot the course for you. It doesn’t end there, however. New GPS units will provide you with voice guided directions for the entire trip, tell you where the nearest gas station is, and will even put you back on course if you take a wrong turn.

GPS stands for Global Positioning System, a system of 28 satellites orbiting earth. It was originally developed for military use, but its uses have spread far beyond just military applications. Your GPS unit can receive signals from these satellites, and by using these signals, calculates your position (within 3-10 meters), direction, altitude, and velocity. Once your GPS unit knows where you are, it can help you get to where you’re going as long as it has mapping software installed. All but the most basic GPS devices currently have mapping software.

Now that you know a little bit about what a GPS device is and how it works, it’s time to educate yourself on the features available and decide which unit will best suit your needs. There is certainly no shortage of GPS devices available, so doing a little research can save you a lot of time and hassle.

Step 1 - Which type of GPS do you need?

There are four main types of GPS units; the car navigation system, the portable outdoors unit, the marine system, and the PDA/GPS hybrid.

If you’re mainly planning on using your GPS to get you from point A to B in your car and don’t think you’d use it for much else, your best bet is the in-car navigation system. These systems can be built in to your car or you can purchase a device that mounts onto your dashboard. Desirable features for the in-car systems are: voice guided directions; detailed built in maps; touch screens; rerouting in case you get off course; and a database with points of interest to help you find the nearest gas station, restaurant, and many more places along your route.

If you’re going to want a GPS device that isn’t limited to the car, then you may want to consider a handheld GPS (http://www.gpsmaestro.com/handheld). These devices are ideal for anyone who loves to hike or bike. Features to look for in a handheld unit are: lightweight, rugged, waterproofing, long battery life, color screens, and mapping features. The handheld GPS units are geared towards people who spend a significant amount of time outside. For example, if you’re out hiking you can easily track where you’ve been; mark your own points of interest; and even find out how far you’ve gone and at what speed. Many new handheld devices offer some navigation features while driving. You can even purchase handheld units that offer built in radios that will not only allow you to communicate with other members of your party, but will also display everyone’s location on your screen.

If being on the water and fishing is your thing then you should probably consider a marine GPS. These units are specifically designed to be on and around water. All of these units will feature waterproofing and should have screens that are easy to read even in bright sunlight. Some other good features to look for are: color chart plotters, onshore and offshore maps, fish hotspots, and sonar capability. You may also want to consider a unit that will function as your car navigator, eliminating the need for two devices.

The final category of GPS device is the PDA/GPS hybrid. This device offers a good combination of the car navigation systems and handheld devices. You’ll get the large screen that you’d find in the car system and the portability of a handheld unit. Also, you get a PDA to help you keep organized. One drawback is the limited selection of these units. Only a few companies have attempted to make an integrated unit, and all have some serious limitations.

If you are considering a PDA/GPS hybrid, I’d recommend you purchase the PDA separately from the GPS. Find a PDA that offers all the features you want in your PDA, then look for a GPS receiver that will attach to your PDA via Bluetooth. The features to watch for are the same as listed for the in car systems. All of the current PDA/GPS devices are better suited towards driving than hiking, although they do offer the portability for outdoor activities if needed. This category probably offers the most potential of the four, but it is also the newest, so watch for significant improvements in this category in the future.

    Step 2 - Budget Considerations

If you’re on a budget, then it’s important to decide which features are most important to you. If you want a full featured car navigation system, it can easily run over $1000 (and over $2000 if you want one that’s built in). If, however, it would be more of a toy to play with, then a handheld device could be a better choice as they can be as low as $100 and are rarely more than $500. Marine GPS devices vary widely in prices, but a very good device can usually be purchased for no more than $1000. If the PDA/GPS devices interest you, they typically range from $400-$900.

Step 3 - Where to Buy

Finding the right store to purchase your GPS device can be difficult. Most stores only carry one or two kinds of GPS. For example, if you go to a sporting goods store you’re likely to find the handheld GPS units and marine GPS units but not the car navigation or the PDA/GPS hybrids. I actually prefer shopping online for GPS units as the prices will likely be lower, and you’ll be able to read user reviews of the items before you buy. Just make sure that if you have a problem with your GPS you are able to return it.

Owning a GPS can be extremely helpful, especially if you tend to get lost a lot or if your glove compartment is overflowing with outdated maps. They can also make planning a long trip to an unfamiliar area a breeze. Deciding which GPS to purchase can be difficult, but as long as you make a list of the features you absolutely must have then all you have to do is find the units that match your budget. Read reviews from other owners and you should have no trouble at all. Once you purchase your own GPS unit, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without one.

The Differences between Laser and Older Radar Detectors

    May 31st, 2007

The newest trend with radar detectors is devices that generate
laser lights using a semiconductor. This new technology far
surpasses the older radar detectors that uses radio signals to
    detect police.

Detectors that use lasers, also known as “ladar,” are the
cutting edge and users experience fantastic success with the
newer models. Since police now use guns that are a combination
of laser and radar, these radar detectors work by picking up the
laser portion and transmitting a sound to warn the driver of
their speed. Some police and state patrols are now using narrow
laser beams, which are much more difficult to detect. The older
radar detectors are completely at a loss when it comes to these
narrow laser beams, but the new laser radar detectors can detect
these beams, although the advanced notification is severely
    limited.

For the most part, laser detectors offer a faster lock-on time,
which averages around one-third of a second. The laser beams are
confined to a limited spread, usually around six feet for about
2,000 feet of space. This allows the beams to be recognized more
quickly, giving the driver more advanced notice.

However, laser detectors come with some drawbacks. For example,
particles, including dust and water, can limit the range and
confuse the system, so your laser radar detector may not work at
top capacity when it is raining or snowing outside. Furthermore,
some surfaces are unable to correctly read laser radar, so the
environment can potentially make all the difference.

Traditional radar detectors use radio waves to detect when a
radar gun is in use. Many police and state troopers still use
regular radio wave radar guns to patrol, so these detectors are
able to pick up these guns. However, radar detectors are unable
to pick up laser radar guns, so drivers will be at a
disadvantage when it comes to detecting the latest technology.
These traditional radar detectors can be easily confused by
other non-radar gun devices, so this may play a factor into your
    purchase.

In the end, choosing a good quality detector is the key. A
traditional radar detector of good quality is a better choice
over a poor quality or cheaply made laser radar detector. Before
you decide to buy any type of radar detector, do the appropriate
research on a brand name and a type that will meet your needs. A
simple internet search will provide you with a wealth of
information regarding all different types and brands of
traditional radar detectors and laser radar detectors. Once you
have made your selection, visit your local electronics store or
favorite internet retailer to purchase a device that will be
backed up with an appropriate warranty that will protect your
    purchase in case of accident.

Getting the Word Out - “PayPerClick” Advertising

    May 31st, 2007

What is Pay Per Click advertising? Well, this is something that many regular web users don’t know about. Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising enables you to list your site at the top of the search engine listings, according to your desired keywords and by paying a fee only when a web surfer clicks on your link. You don’t pay to be listed, only for click throughs.

Your website is indexed according to the selected keywords that refer to your product or service. There is typically a bidding process(something like eBay) that allows you to place a “click” value on your listing per keyword. So, in short, the higher you bid on a keyword, the higher in the ranks your site will be listed. Folks, honestly this is THE fastest way to get listed at the top.

Signing up for a PPC site is a super way to get targeted traffic directed to your site. Plus, it is easy to budget. If you only want to spend a hundred dollars on PPC advertising, then so be it. Most PPC engines keep track of your spending to make things more manageable.

There are a few things that you want to look for in a PPC engine…one thing in particular is how well the search engine works AS a search engine. Some of the PPC engines produce substandard search results and provide horrible usability. This can easily detract from your potential customers. I have provided a review of ONLY the PPC engines that I have personally used. One thing to take note: If a PPC engine looks cheesy and unprofessional, it is probably NOT WORTH spending money on. Stick to the big guys…stick to at least the ones I have reviewed.

I’ve personally only worked with what I consider the three main Pay-Per-Click search engine listings: Google Adwords, Overture, FindWhat. I’ve spent my fare share with each of them.
