Grandfather Clocks - A time honored tradition

June 28th, 2007

One of the most valued kinds of clocks on earth are grandfather
clocks. Bulova grandfather clocks and Howard Miller grandfather
clocks are some of the most sought after names in clocks and you
can get your own antique grandfather clocks on the internet or
from a wonderful antique store. There are also plenty of modern
wholesale grandfather clocks for you to choose from on and
offline.

When you are shopping for grandfather clocks you will first need
to see where in your home or business you want to keep said
clocks. Did you want one that can fit on a shelf or do you have
a special corner that you want to put one in? Take some time and
some measurements and then you will be able to make the right
decisions about the grandfather clocks that will look the best
in your home or office.

Grandfather clocks, especially pearl grandfather clocks, will
add class and elegance to any home or office quickly and easily.
Everyone will fall prey to the charms of your clocks in no time.
German grandfather clocks are one of the most favorable of all
grandfather clocks. They are known throughout the world for
their beauty and accuracy. Many of the older grandfather clocks
were not the most accurate clocks in the world but the more
modern discount grandfather clocks will always keep good time.

Some people are not really concerned with the fact that their
grandfather clocks cannot tell time accurately. In fact, most
people who buy Howard Miller grandfather clocks and Bulova
grandfather clocks buy them not for the time aspect but for
looks. Looks are important, it is a simple fact and your
grandfather clocks will bring all kinds of joy and happiness to
your home and décor.

Wholesale grandfather clocks are easy to find and purchase
online. If you have always wanted to get some antique
grandfather clocks or modern discount grandfather clocks you
will be able to do that all online in just a few seconds. By
doing a quick search online you can pull up tons of great stores
where you can buy your grandfather clocks. It does not matter if
you are looking for pearl grandfather clocks, German grandfather
clocks, Bulova grandfather clocks, Howard Miller grandfather
clocks, antique grandfather clocks or even discount grandfather
clocks or wholesale grandfather clocks, you will find it all
online. And when you are thinking about making a purchase as
large and important as a grandfather clock it is vital that you
save money where you can.

Maintenance of grandfather clocks should never be too much of an
issue. Everyone can simply call on a clocksmith to come in and
fix anything that goes wrong with grandfather clocks. This
should not cost too much money, but it will depend on what the
actual problem is. Most of the good grandfather clocks will not
need a lot of work, but like anything else in the world, parts
do wear out over time and you may need to repair the odd piece
from time to time.

What About Those Pyramids?

June 28th, 2007

‘Mr. Rhodes aspired to be the creator of one of those vast semi-religious, quasi-political associations which, like the Jesuits have played so large a part in the history of the world. To be more strictly accurate, he wished to found an Order … and while he lived, he dreamed of being both its Caesar and its Loyola.’ - W.T. Stead”

He did it because of what he saw and learned in the King’s Chamber - we blanche because we have to listen to these nauseating and transparent fluff artists like ‘Amazing’ Randi. Hawass is a spokesperson for Cayce who was a Mason like his father. The list goes on and on. Is there any better evidence of a total disregard for honest scholarship? It certainly is a confusing array of nefarious intent, as we see it. No we can’t possibly do justice to this monument and library in stone, left as a legacy by adepts who saw what man would become? Then they left these monuments so that modern man could see he isn’t so all-fired important. Time portal and energy vortex, energy plant, and connection of the World Mind with cosmic life: there is so much to address.

TURNNING YOUR CHALLENGES INTO ASSETS

June 28th, 2007

Challenge often come our way but it is the way we accept it that
makes us either grow or suffer defeat. I have been taught that i
should rather respond to them than reacting to them. Reacting to
them is giving life to it. One of the common ways by which we
react to these challenges is through FEAR. Someone said fear is:
False Evidence Appearing Real. That is why Prsident Theodore
Roosevelt said “The only thing we need to fear is fear itself.”
Most times 90% of our fears never really happen, so it’s useless
to react as if the FALSE is REAL. Responding to our challenges
is dwelling on the possible solution that best solve our
problem. Someone said “There is no hopeless situation, only
people who think holeplessly. You are not responsible to what
life throws at you but are definitely responsible to what you
make of it. So many people have allowed life’s challenges to
cancel their lifetime because they’ve decided to react to their
mountains rather than use it as an elevator towards reaching
higher. As Andres Lara said “Life will blow against you. Dont
resist its flow, because what you resist (react to) will
persist. You cannot control the fact that the wind is blowing
north when you are going south, yet you can control you sails.
You cannot control where you start, yet you have absolute
control of your actions and, therefore, of where you end up.”
Your energies should be directed on how to turn your problems
into propellers. The Most awful situation can become solution
when we set our minds right. As the Chinese said “You cannot
prevent birds of sorrow from flying over your head, but you can
prevent them from building nests in your hair.” We are only
capable of achieving the impossible when we make out challenges
solutions and just like Robert Schuller said “For every mountain
their is a miracle.”

The miracle can be found when we are willing to look for it.
Just as the bible says, it is only as we seek that we’ll find.
Indeed every adversity has in it a greater or equivalent
benefit. Here’s a quote from the man who escaped from Cuba, had
no money, was homeless but turned out to be a Nationally known
speaker, a president of inspiration magazine, and an author of
many books Andres Lara : “There is always a creative way to turn
your weakness into a strength. Your job is to fine that way.”
The victory within is dos not assert itself until we are ready.
God has made the way, find that way!

Alcohol - Fruit Turning Foe

June 28th, 2007

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. This statement could probably be generalized for other fruits as well. The salubrious nature of fresh fruits, rich in vitamins and minerals is already too well known. But when the same fruit (particularly grapes) is fermented, losing its natural colour and flavor, the end product is a drink for feeling high. But when regularly consumed could actually leave you high and dry. During fermentation, the yeast reacts with the sugars and breaks down into alcohol. It’s all about transformation, first from grapes to wine and then from addiction to rehabilitation.

What does alcohol do that its intake becomes so alluring? It basically slows down the nervous system, lowers the inhibitions and affects the ability to make judgments. It takes us into a trance like state, giving a sense of unbridled joy and complete liberation. While some drink for societal needs and status symbol others (usually youths) drink for fun and merry. When it creates such a liberating and sociable atmosphere, why these campaigns against the good old alcohol?

Where we do not stop promoting the goodness of fermented milk (yoghurt), there is a hale bulla about fermented barley and grapes. Alcohol is not abusive or harmful by tendency. In fact limited amount of red wine taken with food helps the French people to keep the cholesterol level in control despite their high calorie cuisine. But unlike yoghurt, alcohol needs to be consumed within specified limits. It is the unrestrained and regular consumption that soils the sport. Alcohol enters our system like devil coming in sheep skin. The initial excitement of intoxication paves way for regular drinking and without realizing there lays another prey of it.

A new civilization is now growing at the door steps of clubs and lounges. And the prime characteristic of this civilization is alcohol or more pleasantly said “drinks”. Never before was man more dependent on anything than he is now on alcohol. Today to shake your leg you need a drink, to converse with a friend you need a drink and to feel alive you again need a drink. Young men and women, in shimmering outfits, dancing to deafening music are looking for relaxation in the darkness, under those neon lights with one drink after another. And these juveniles make such ignorant bargains that they settle for hangovers instead of sleep.

Vomiting, headaches, acidity and hangovers, are common consequences of unchecked drinking. Severe hangovers could last for 48 hours or more. The following morning the sufferer makes a resolution to stay away from the damned bottle. But despite the suffering and the resolution, there we are, basking in the cradles of this new-fangled civilization. All self control begins to wane in front of this charmer. The moment alcohol goes down the throat; it affects every part of your body and mind, paralyzing your rationality. Your sobriety and senses desert you, the tongue goes unleashed and the social norms are jeopardized. This is why drinking is still a taboo in eastern society.

Risk of road accidents, unsafe and regretful sex, verbal duels and violence run high under the spell of alcohol. This is not all. The burden on our liver is immense. It takes about an hour for the liver to remove one unit of alcohol from our blood. Regular drinking can be fatal for the liver, damaging it permanently. We are quite aware of the harm we cause and the pressure we exert on the body by drinking yet we go for it by all means. This addictive tendency makes alcohol a threat to reckon with.

In the present times, alcohol is assuming ubiquity for all occasions, emotions and society. While the blithe youth gulp peg after peg for enjoyment, the depressed hearts find equal solace in it. The gradual increase of alcohol in the body numbs the mind making us forget all pain and problems. But naïve that we are, we fail to understand that alcohol does not solve the problem; it only temporarily blinds us to it. And in our illusion of liberation, we even lose our precious time on hangovers instead of concentrating on the issue at hand. Drinking is no treatment for crestfallenness. In fact research shows that regular drinking could lead to permanent depression. The drinking culture is not parochial to the high end society. The lower strata are equally under its clasp. Violent wife abuse by sloshed husbands is an everyday ritual for numerous households all over. This is a sign of disintegrated mind and body.

“Life is like an autumn leaf, its hold is frail, its date is brief.” Why should we add to life’s brevity and uncertainty by surrendering to alcohol? Lounging, clubbing, drinking… none is wrong. The fallacy is in our dependency on it. To celebrate life, we turn mindless, lose our senses and create a fake world. And further to handle the blows of the real world, we again dip ourselves in the Bloody Mary. When we start wrong, how can the end be right? We are looking for happiness in the flimsy world of glitz and glamour. Every night your quivering heart takes you to the pub, your craving body gulps a drink and the mind drifts to nothingness. And the morning brings with it a pounding headache. Being tipsy is not being happy or relaxed.

We also seek the wrong source to tackle the troubles of life. Our discretion and decision is so flawed that sooner than later, the remedy (drinking) itself becomes the disease. Alcohol is neither a taboo nor poison. But it does not take long for its magic to turn into sorcery. There are beautiful and lasting magical things within you and around you that can transform the surreal into real. Trust in the fountainhead of joy within you and the bottle of wine could be spared.

Breathe Easy With Air Filters

June 28th, 2007

All of us breathe air. Oxygen that is given out by plants is
taken in by us while the carbon-d-oxide is taken in by the
plants. It therefore becomes imperative that we breathe in pure
and uncontaminated air. The state of orderliness in our system
is largely dependent on the purity of the air that we breathe
in. In earlier times; such a possibility existed with people
living long and healthily.

In today’s age of industrialization and mechanization pure air
has become a rarity, with the atmosphere becoming polluted and
contaminated as a result of modern living. But survive we must.
That necessity is the mother of invention is an idea that is
validated in each era. Man comes out with a marvelous invention
to suit the times and the needs impure air is not a problem that
is devoid of an answer. Through a device and an arrangement, it
is possible to breathe in pure air even though the air around
may contain impurities.

Air filters becomes a useful device in the context referred to.
Filters are the act or the process of sifting the impurities
contained in a mixture while partaking of the pure segment.
There are water filters which do the job of separating
impurities in water. Filtration is a process towards this
objective. The more precise a process is, more the benefits.

Air filters work on this principle and so there are types of air
filters corresponding to the degree with which they air in
removing the impurities present in the air. They live up to the
challenges of ‘purifying’ the breathed-in air indoors which is
more contaminated than the one outside, contrary to common
perceptions. The story of ailments and illness starts with the
air we breathe in. Outside, the air can be felt to be pure or
impure but indoors it is difficult. That is the problem!

However, particles of dust, pollen, bacteria, smoke, smog, pet
dander, plant and mold spares are removed. Air filters thus
helps in increasing the energy efficiency of the healing system
while prolonging its life.

Air pollution is reduced upon adopting the three strategies
which are control of the sources of pollution, ensuring adequate
ventilation and cleaning indoor air. Air filters does all of
this. Air filters can effectively reduce the levels of
particulates in the event of someone smoking in the house or in
the neighboring apartment. However, tobacco combustion chemical
remains.

Air filters also bring in disadvantages. The theory that air
filters removes allergy problems is contentious. Persons get
relief from asthma by installing air filters in a clean and
well-ventilated room is a hypothesis, which is yet to be
validated. Often, windows need to be closed. This would result
in deprivation of oxygen besides disallowing adequate exchange
of air. There can be a possibility of carbon material in some
air filters becoming contaminated with mold which when spewed in
to the room can worsen asthma and allergy related illness.

The importance of fresh air to our physical and mental health
cannot be underscored. Yet opening the windows for letting in
fresh air is not always possible. It is here that air filters
step in to become a common household feature.

Grow An Affiliate Biz

June 28th, 2007

The biggest failure in affiliate marketing is not collecting prospects’ email addresses. If you only send your prospects to your affiliate website, you are promoting someone else’s business, not your own. Your goal should be not to sell affiliate products, but to grow your own business.

Here is how you build an affiliate business.

1. Use a lead-capture page.

Get your own website and build a home page. Don’t write a sales letter for your affiliate product. Instead, write an email course focusing on the strongest benefits of your product. Highlight these benefits in a short sales letter that is designed for one thing only—to get people to subscribe to your course. Then, in your course, promote your affiliate product. The value in this method is that you are actually building a direct marketing business and gaining your own customers.

2. Build your own list.

Spend your time, effort, and money driving targeted traffic to your website. The more visitors you get, the more subscribers you get, and hopefully the more money you make. You can never underestimate the long-term value in having your own customer list. Keep building it. Spend at least 65% of your time in building your list.

3. Reinvest in your business.

When you make a sale, congratulate yourself! Take some of the profits and spend them on yourself. Take your spouse to dinner, go to a movie, or buy another internet marketing ebook! But your goal should be to grow your business. You should take at least 60% of your profits and reinvest them back into your business. How? By buying more ezine ads, adding another pay-per-click campaign, or using some other kind of advertising. Perhaps you could buy an ebook with reprint rights instead of marketing affiliate products—that way you keep all of the profits.

4. Keep marketing to your list.

You should always be on the lookout for new products to promote. Whenever you find one, write another email series, add it to your autoresponder, and keep promoting to your list. Focus on adding at least one new product and series to your autoresponder every month. Some will get tired of the information you send and unsubscribe, but if you are focused on building your list you will always have many more subscribers for each unsubscribe you receive.

If you follow these steps, your affiliate business will grow into a very profitable direct marketing business.

The Advantages of Portable MP3 Players

June 28th, 2007

With their solid-state technology, compact size, and abundant memory, portable mp3 players are the state of the art in portable music systems.

Most portable mp3 players feature storage systems that have no moving parts. This gives mp3 a distinct advantage over other portable music players, such as CD players, because there is no chance of skip, whether the user is jogging, taking a bumpy car ride, or cycling on a dirt path.

The mp3 songs, or other audible media, are usually stored on Flash Memory systems, either built-in or on the Sony Memory Stick, SmartMedia, or CompactFlash cards. These are the same cards and sticks that are often used for digital cameras, and work with the portable mp3 player in a similar manner.

Mp3 files are first prepared on a personal computer, either by downloading music from the Internet, compressing songs from a CD format, or creating original music on mp3 software. The files are then downloaded, via the computer’s USB port or parallel port, directly into the mp3 player, or into a reader or removable drive that takes the card or stick of choice. Many portable mp3 players come with software programs to assist with the download process.

In addition to solid-state memory, portable mp3 players have an advantage over CD players in the amount of data they can hold. A song that requires 32MB on a CD will be reduced to about 1.6MB in the mp3 compression format. This means that even the cheapest portable mp3 player can carry around 4 hours’ worth of music.

If the portable mp3 player is not going to be used in moving vehicles, or carried while walking, cycling or jogging, a model with a microdrive is an option. Microdrives are hard drives, like those used in personal computers, but much smaller. Like with regular hard drives, there is the possibility of skip if the portable mp3 player is jostled. However, microdrives have the advantage over Flash Media in both cost and storage capacity. Microdrives can carry anywhere from 10 to 150 times as much media as Flash, turning the portable mp3 player into a musical powerhouse.

3 Simple Steps In Searching For A Baby Name

June 28th, 2007

1) BRAINSTORM

It is a good idea to pick a baby boy, girl, or a unisex baby name, even if the sonogram has already shown you the sex of your baby, after all, surprises do happen. Set aside time with no interruptions to clear your mind and brainstorm names that appeal to you and write them on a piece of paper. You may want to honor an endeared relative, or choose a name with religious meaning. Or perhaps you have heard a name before and said to yourself ‘Hey, that’s a cool baby name’. If you want the name to have a specific meaning, for example ‘strong’, do an internet search, or look it up in a book. Check out the most popular baby names list for the last few years. It is surprising how many names you thought were unique are actually very popular. If you want an unusual baby name, skim the dictionary or a favorite book to see what pops out at you. Surf the internet for sites with free or paid baby name wizards, usually you answer a few questions and the wizard suggests possible baby names, for more ideas.

2) ELIMINATE

Hopefully you have a good-sized list of possible baby names by now. Takes a few days break after your brainstorming session to clear your mind. Then, write your names neatly on another sheet of paper, including all combinations of possible first and middle names with your last name. You may be able to automatically eliminate a few that may have sounded appealing when you were brainstorming, but now you wonder ‘what was I thinking?’

Now, eliminate names in which the last letter of either the first or middle name ends with the first letter of the last name, for example Allison Newman, or Allison Ann Newman (makes pronunciation difficult because there is no clear distinction where the last name begins and the first name ends). Eliminate names whose initials spell undesired acronyms, for example
Richard Arthur Turner = RAT, unless you want to make it as easy as possible for other children to poke fun at your child in school (yes kids can be cruel). Do some internet or book research to find out the meanings of remaining names. You may want to eliminate names with undesired meanings, for example ‘naïve’, while you may discover others that are definitely keepers, for example ‘brave’.

3) DECIDE

I know, deciding on a baby name is easier said than done. Give yourself a few days break again, and then reassess your list. You should be able to eliminate a few more. Ask friends and family for their opinions, or post your finalists on an internet poll. You can do this for free on many sites nowadays.

And you also have to decide how you want to spell it! Many people nowadays are creating exotic ways to spell traditional names for example Kaysey or Caisee, and like most things, this has pros and cons. It gives originality and uniqueness to your childs name, however your child will go through life constantly correcting the spelling of his or her name.

And remember, the most important thing is that YOU are happy with whatever baby name you choose. Happy Hunting!

Arizona Doctor Discovers Triathlons as the Ultimate Weight Loss Program - Loses Sixty Pounds.

June 28th, 2007

Please feel free to publish this article in your Newsletter or
on your Website (with Resource Box included).

Arizona Doctor Discovers Triathlons as the Ultimate Weight Loss
Program - Loses Sixty Pounds.

I never intended to get fat! I am not exactly sure how it
happened, but there I was a 6’2” thirty-four year old pushing
close to 270 pounds. My cholesterol was high, my triclecrides
were high, and my blood pressure was high. I was on a direct
course for developing diabetes, increased risk of heart disease,
increased risk of cancer, and a ton of other diseases related to
obesity.

It gets worse. I am a doctor, a sports chiropractor to be exact
and my office is located inside a health club. Unfortunately,
like many other doctors and other health professional out there,
I was not practicing what I was preaching.

Living in sunny Arizona, land of the endless summer, sooner or
later you have to go to the lake, the water park, or you are
invited to a cookout and pool party. That is when all my excuses
caught up to me. Despite knowing the health risks associated
with being overweight, it was the feeling of low self-esteem and
embarrassment that finally drove me to action.

So there I was, a doctor, ready to get the weight off. I hate to
admit it; I tried some of those quick fix gimmick supplements. I
tried a bunch of the fad diets. I bought a bunch of books from
all the “weight loss experts”. Sure I would lose a little
weight, but I could never stick with the diet for any length of
time. When I went off the diet I would gain the weight right
back. Then tried working my butt off in the gym, running almost
every day. That got real boring, and I found that running
everyday is not the best thing to do when you weigh close to 270
pounds.

There I was again, still no direction, no focus, no drive,
nothing to guide me. Frustrated about not getting any results
and what to do, I thought I was just going to have to accept
that I was overweight and deal with it. I gave it a real effort
and it did not work.

During all of this, the chiropractor that I bought my office
from mentioned that he was beginning a weight loss program at
his office, which was based on his experience with triathlon
training. That got my attention. I really wanted to give the
program a try, but I lived too far from his office to come in on
a regular basis. So I began researching the sport on the
Internet.

The more I read about triathlons and triathlon training, the
more sense it made to me as a way to help me lose weight. If you
are going to do an event that involves swimming, cycling, and
running you obviously are going to have to train that way. The
idea about jumping into the pool for an exercise swim was not
something I was looking forward to, and the last thing I wanted
to do was to put on a swimsuit and workout. Then I remembered
how painful my knees were from running around, and swimming
would be easier on my joints.

I also began reading about using heart rate monitors and the
affects of exercising at different heart rates. Many of the
authors of the books on heart zone training were triathletes
themselves, and they gave numerous examples on how using heart
zone training you can track your progress and maximize your
exercise program.

The more I searched the triathlon Internet sites, the more I
became interested in the sport. The people who competed in
triathlons looked really fit, it was inspiring. That is when I
decided to take my commitment to losing weight to the next
level. Weighing close to 270 pounds, I signed up for my first
triathlon. Five months away, I was going to do a sprint race,
which was a 500m swim, a 15-mile bike, then and a 3-mile run.
This was a much shorter distance than many triathlon races,
however at the time I could not do even one of the events let
alone all of them back-to-back.

Using a combination of what I learned about heart zone training
and from the triathlon Internet sites, I started my program. I
my alternated exercise sessions between swimming, cycling, and
running. I also did about an hour of weight training a week.
This really added a variety to the exercise program, and it
never got boring. One day I would just bike, then next maybe run
10 minutes, do a weight session, then bike for 25 minutes. Then
the next day I would just swim. The next day I would swim then
follow it up with a run. My knees were holding up very well with
little, if any pain. At the same time I started eating better,
no real diet, just common sense stuff, avoiding the sugars and
white breads.

The use of the heart rate monitor became a very useful tool. It
kept me from working too hard or too easy. The monitor I was
using, the Polar 610, also came with software. I was able to
download all of my exercise sessions into a computer. Then I was
able to objectively document my exercise sessions. The software
was able to track my calories burned during exercise, my average
heart rate, hours spent exercising per week, and much more.
After every exercise session actually looked forward to
downloading my session to see how I did.

It also allowed me to exercise at different heart rates. One day
I would run at 70% of my maximum heart rate for 10 minutes, then
bike at 80% of my maximum heart rate for 10 minutes, then go
back to running at 70% for another 10 minutes. The next day I
would just bike for 40 min. But I would again exercise at
different heart rates, 10 min at 70%, and 5 minutes at 80%, and
10 minutes at 75 %, and 5 minutes at 80%, and then 10 minutes at
70%. This was a fun way to exercise and I actually began to look
forward to exercising, the whole process was less boring.

I kept up with this type of training for five months. On the day
of my first triathlon, I was forty pounds lighter.

Some how, some way, I did it. I finished my first triathlon, and
as crazy as it sounds I really enjoyed myself. I was feeling
good about my accomplishment, but I still had some serious
weight to lose. So I found another triathlon race six months
later, signed up for it and continued training. The weight just
kept coming off and coming off.

At the time of my second race, eleven months after learning
about triathlons, I had lost sixty pounds.

It seemed like every week one of my patients, whom I had not
seen for months, would come in for a treatment. The reactions
were always the same, doc what the heck happened to you, you
look like a totally different person!

I felt like a different person too, I was running without knee
pain, I was happier at work, my relationship with my family was
better, I was no longer embarrassed to go to a pool party or the
water park, in fact I looked forward to them.

My patients and the members of the health club where my office
was located were constantly asking me about my weight loss. I
remember one of the gym members walking up to my desk and
looking at my before and after pictures. He pointed to my fat
picture and said, “That is me” then he pointed to my fit picture
and said, “That is the way I want to look”. Wow, what a great
feeling, I could not believe it.

As I am sitting here writing this article, it has been a year
since my first triathlon. Just a few weeks ago, I raced in my
third race and I actually managed to finish second in my age
group.

As a result of getting into triathlons, not only do I have a new
body, I have a new life.

Seven Ways to Make Your Fiction Compulsive Reading

June 28th, 2007

Do You Have What It Takes to Grab and Hold Reader Attention?
Does your fiction writing do the sales work for you?
Do you have that magic ingredient to hold readers until story’s end?
What are readers looking for in a good read anyway?

This article tells you how the What’s In It For Me? (WIIFM) formula, normally applied to commercial endeavors, is equally important to readers who are browsing or scanning fiction looking
for that next good read.

What’s In It For Me? is all about you giving something of value. This is what attracts and holds your reader. As a fiction writer this thing of value that you give to the reader is an experience.

An experience is an exchange between the story and the reader that sets up a thinking and feeling connection for the reader.

When a reader first approaches any story they have no connection, no feeling response. At this point no exchange has occurred and no experience has begun.

It is your story’s responsibility to move the reader into a state of connection by giving them a thinking and feeling experience. The better the experience, the more your story is valued.

How You Create an Experience for Your Reader.
Your fiction story is built from components: plot, structure,
characters, action, description, dialogue and your writing style.
It is from these components that an experience can be created if you ensure they have quality.

Without quality components your writing will be, at best, bland or uninteresting (default reader disconnection: browsing on to the next book), or at worst, even irritating (active reader disconnection:
noting never to look at that author’s works again).

Rigorously apply the following checklist to your story, before and during writing. This ensures each component contributes to a quality reader experience?

Plot
 Does it offer enough temptation for the reader to come along for the ride? (Apply this question to every component.)
 Are the twists and turns believable even if incredible?
 If it’s a simple or well-used plot, remember that more responsibility for creating reader experience will therefore fall on the other components of your story.

Structure
 Have you chosen a structure that presents the story in its best form and light? Or did you pick the easiest or most familiar structure without thinking about it?

Character
 Here is your most important opportunity to give the reader an experience. If you don’t create connection here your reader has little reason to stay with the story.
 Psychological depth and originality create some of the most compelling and successful characterizations. Are you creating characters using a ‘cut and paste’ approach from elsewhere in fiction or life? Or are you originating from within your own creative depths, having absorbed observations and experiences from life and let that settle into the mix within yourself? A Philip Marlow character or an unfamiliar (new) mix of traits?

Action
 Are your action scenes genuinely originating out of your characters’ interactions with the plot and each other? Or are you artificially imposing action responses onto your characters? The latter can lack believability and lose the connection you may have established with the reader via other components of your story.

Description
 Enough or too much? Are you including trivia? Are you omitting vital ’show don’t tell’ information about character, place, purpose, atmosphere. Is your description integral to the transmission of the plot, characters, action, your style, the story’s tone? The reader’s feeling experience can be enormously enhanced by judicious use of description. It helps create that virtual reality experience that takes the reader deeper into the story.

Dialogue
 The most important questions to consider with dialogue are: Is it worth saying? and; Is it said well? Delete, or replace with valuable content as necessary.
 A note on using street talk. Beware; great skill needed. Reading written translations of this material can be tedious.
 Similarly, with jargon or accented language use this sparingly and with skill, otherwise it is painful to read. Err on the side of using regular written language with tweaking to support your style, story tone, or the character’s personality or background.

Your Style
 Some writers forget or choose not to develop this and just copy someone else’s style or a generic style. This can work if the other components of your story are strong.
 If you specifically try for the creation of your own writing style or ‘voice’, remember to create a style aimed at benefiting the reader, not your self image. If the former leads to the latter, great. The flow goes one way only. You may need to experiment or workshop this style. Look for a feel, a pace, a tone, a way of thinking, speaking or moving that creates the type of energy you want for your story, characters, narrator and action. Find an integrated, fundamental way to write this energy into your story components. Each time you sit down to write your next scene you need to put yourself into that energy, that style, that feel, to maintain consistency and quality.

Briefly
Practice these seven components with short written versions to ensure you have a quality experience to offer your reader. Try standard ten-minute exercises. This will give you an idea of which components you are ready, and which need more development.

And always apply your maxim: What thinking and feeling experience are you giving your reader? Are you taking them there? Or are they just watching from the outside while you go there?
