Does the Moon Have Covers?

November 25th, 2007

Recently, one late winter night, my four-year old son and I counted stars with one another. After a few minutes, he pointed to the bright moon and asked, “Why doesn’t the moon have covers?”

“Covers? What do you mean?” I inquired. And in his own boyish terminology, he launched into a long description justifying the moon’s requirements for blankets to protect itself against the weather’s elements. To me, his ideas were plausible and thoughtful.

As an investor, it may serve you well to consider your portfolio’s protection. Have you protected your investments during this year’s volatile cold snap and will you have the necessary diversification to enjoy a potential market re-heating? The following may assist you in all types of markets.

For individual stock investors, a defensive posture served them well during the recent bear market. By employing “tight” stop losses, they created downsize protection. Even if the sell price seemed undesirable at that particular time, building a cash position with such proceeds allowed investors a chance to re-enter the market at lower levels. Risk of principal still existed in such scenarios and this strategy will not guarantee you a positive return. For many, this strategy is not proper.

If your portfolio is growth oriented, no income generation necessary, it is important to keep focus on your pre-determined investment philosophy. Even so, you should not ignore the short-term. Pay close attention to market behaviors and stick to your plan. I would speculate investors of Enron had long term goals, but little or no exit strategy. It is better to know and profit, than buy another’s high price and blow it!

According to the 2001 book entitled Are You Normal About Money? by Bernice Kanner, seventy-two percent of mutual fund investors never read the accompanying prospectus. I admit the literature can be boring, however it can be extremely insightful as well. Look at the portfolio holdings and determine the primary sector allocations. You will also develop a good idea of the fund’s turn-over ratio by reading the prospectus.

You should be aware of the driving forces behind all your funds’ returns. Are your funds allocated in strong positions and equally strong sectors? Or, is the money manager hanging onto the dreams and ideas of yesterday, hoping that six-dollar stock will return to eighty by year-end?

It is a good idea to evaluate your portfolio periodically and ask yourself “Why do I own these positions?” Time passes and your goals either change or come to fruition. Seasons change and you should adapt accordingly, why not institute diligent tactics for your savings? The thought you put into such procedures may help protect your net worth.

Bird Flu How To Protect Yourself

November 24th, 2007

Bird Flu is spreading around the world as fast as wild birds
fly. The birds are carrying flu with them as they migrate. They
infect local, non migratory birds that in turn infect local
chickens, ducks, turkeys and so on.

Bird flu is spread to humans primarily by contact with chickens,
ducks and other poultry. But it is also spread by contact with
any other infected birds. So even if you live in the city, the
local pigeons can carry bird flu to your window sill.

Humans appear to become infected with the virus not by eating
infected poultry, but by contacting infected matter or preparing
them for consumption.

Dust and viral particles seem to be a primary cause of human
infection. “We believe those particles are inhaled and that’s
how people become infected.” said Dick Thompson, a spokesman for
the World Health Organization, in Geneva. He added, “It’s very
difficult to stop the movement of this virus now.”

Children are particularly at high risk to bird flu because they
may play where birds carrying bird flu may be found. And it is
not only contact with the infected birds that is a problem.
Feathers and feces carry the bird flu virus. So a child may
contact pigeon feces on a window sill, walk through it on a city
sidewalk, pick up some feathers or play with a neighbors caged
bird.

Likewise you may walk through pigeon or other bird feces and
unknowingly transport bird flu into your home.

The World Health Organization advises that you should not keep
pet birds, you should avoid contact with any live birds, feces,
feathers, waste or dead birds. You should wash your hands and
any clothes that may have come in contact with the bird flu
virus.

They also advise that you remove your shoes outside your house
to prevent bringing any bird flu virus into the house. To clean
your shoes, put plastic bags over your hands, cover your mouth
with a cloth and wear goggles. Clean them with soap and water
before you bring them into the house.

The World Health Organization advises that you do not eat dead
poultry. Now that is a rather amazing warning since it seems
that most people do not eat live chickens. And since many people
in the west buy their chickens, dead, in supermarkets, they are
unable to determine whether the chicken, in a live state had
bird flu or not. They must either take the appropriate cautions
about eating poultry or not eat it at all.

All chicken must be cooked so that there is no pink meat. The
internal temperature must reach at least 70 degrees centigrade
or above. The world health organization says that such meat is
safe to eat.

But the person preparing the food and the preparation area are
at risk from bird flu. So you may prepare the food well, but
contaminate your kitchen with bird flu.

The eggs in your refrigerator can be dangerous. Eggs can also
carry bird flu virus on their shells and inside their shells.
You should wash all eggs before putting them there and if you
break one, you should thoroughly cleanse the area.

The World Health Hrganization says that hard boiled eggs that
have been boiled at least 5 minutes and whose internal
temperature has exceeded 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

Public health officials have recommended that people in regions
known to harbor avian influenza get vaccinated against human
forms of influenza. Practically speaking, the way that it is
spreading, that is everywhere.

There are 4 influenza drugs: amantadine and rimantadine which
help fight certain strains of H5N1 infections, and Tamiflu and
Relenza which are both drugs classified as neuraminidase
inhibitors and are said to help against most strains of H5N1. In
any case, it is wise to note at least the cautions in this
article and adhere to sanitary practices in general.

The World Health Organization has published a great deal of
information about bird flu that it wishes to be spread by NGOs
and the media. This article is written to support that effort.
You are asked to spread this information as far and as wide as
possible. Because sales of antiviral drugs, which might confer
protection, have outpaced manufacturers’ ability to make them,
the information in this article is particularly important, so
please spread the word. Publish it and pass it on to your

Going Beyond Diffusion

November 24th, 2007

Beyond Diffusion

This advanced diffusion system is designed for continuous operation and holds a full oz. bottle of essential oil. It’s Patented nebulizer breaks up essential oils into micro-mist and blends it with the air you breathe. Air entering the diffuser is first scrubbed with a hygienic filter that intercepts pollen, bacteria, dust, smoke, smog, dander and viruses even smaller than HEPA filters can catch. This filter never needs cleaning and lasts one year or more.

Selector switch allows continuous operation or intermittent cycle of 5 minutes on, 25 minutes off to maintain desired environment while saving precious oils. Adjustable nebulizer also regulates amount of essential oil diffused. Dimensions 7 1/4″ x 5″ x 3 3/4″. 110V AC.

The patented nebulizer propels a thin micro particle mist of essential oils into your environment. By revitalizing the air with their antiseptic action, the oils become an important part of your health maintenance program. It diffuses essential oils through cold diffusion. It is very user friendly. Turn it on in the morning and it will run intermittently throughout the day. Adjust the cap to increase/decrease output. Fragrances an area up to 1,000 square feet, covering an extra large room or multiple rooms.

Benefits of Diffused Essential Oils

Essential oils when diffused, can be the best air filtration system in the world.

They will:

1. Purify by removing metallic particles and toxins from the air.

2. Increase atmospheric oxygen.

3. Increase ozone and negative ions in the house, which inhibits bacteria growth.

4. Destroy odors from mold, cigarettes, and animals & more.

5. Fill the air with a fresh, herbal aromatic scent.

Source-Dr. Gary Young (Internet)

Remember-All essential oils are not the same. Some are better germ killers than others.

The Essential Air diffuser Models are comprissed of:

Compressor – This provides the air power to project the scents. Plug it in to start and remove the plug to stop (Basic unit, all others use interal timers.

Green Nebulizer & Amber Bottle – The nebulizer turns the essential oil into a spray, and then a mist, which circulates on air currents. The cap rotation allows you to decrease or increase the output. The black filter inside the green nubulizer helps turn the spray into a mist. The cap also helps turn the spray into a mist. You could operate the nebulizer without the black filter, however this would increase the power of the spray, but reduce the mist.

Gerald F. McCarthy holds a patent on the unique diffuser used in all ESSENTIAL AIR models.

Over the years McCarthy of Leyden House has accumulated seventeen patents in the field of energy and health related products. A speech pathologist by profession he was intrigued by the beneficial effects of natural healing and began searching for ways to deliver essential oils more effectively.

Forex Broker Involvement Optional

November 24th, 2007

To trade on the forex market, the largest financial market on the planet, one must use a forex broker. Not unlike a stock broker, a forex broker can also makes suggestions about which moves to make when exchanging foreign currency. Some forex brokers even supply technical analysis to some of their clients and offer tips on research to improve their success as forex traders.

Typically in the forex market a forex broker is a banking institution who may buy up large amounts of a certain currency. For years, banks were the only ones who had access to the forex markets. But today with the Internet, any forex trader, who subscribes with a forex broker, can access the market 24 hours a day.

Today, as with stock brokers, the brick and mortar institutions, such as banks, are less of an option for the individual forex trader who works from home, monitoring the news and gaining insight into certain technical information to help with his or her trading decisions.

Choosing a forex broker may depend on your needs. If you are new to the field, there are houses, or online forex brokers who may cater to your needs, providing in-depth research, ample time to demo their product and so on. Other forex brokers are geared toward the experienced online forex trader. They too offer advice, but may be less likely to offer instructional help with the information, assuming that you may already know how it may or may not benefit you when you read it. It is advisable to read about and even run a demo on several different online forex brokers before going with one.

Conversations in Management: Anais Nin

November 23rd, 2007

“Life shrinks or expands according to one’s courage.” -Anais Nin

Anais Nin is one of those marvelous characters of the twentieth century who were scandalous in their day, but almost tame by current standards. She was born in 1903 into an artistic family whose economic fortunes did quite a bit of shrinking and expanding during her childhood. She ran with the surrealist set following WW I and her written work explored the nature of the creative individual, psychoanalysis, the public and private self, and sexuality. When her circle (which included Henry Miller) was hard pressed for cash, they wrote erotica for a dollar a page—she called it sexual caricature. When they couldn’t find a publisher for their work, they started their own publishing house—Siana Editions. An obscure figure, she was discovered only in the last ten years of her life. She was a woman who knew a lot about the courage of daily living.

Much has been written about courage, but Nin is pointing to something slightly different—she asks us to consider the consequences of courage. Courage is the strength to confront, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or adversity. The word itself comes from the Latin for heart—the organ most associated with life. Thus, to demonstrate courage is to show heart. It’s to show that what we believe is important. Courage is about our life and how we choose to live it.

Now, most of us don’t live in a world where we have to stare down Grizzly bears, or pluck a child from a burning building or foil bank robbers on a daily basis. But, we are regularly called to dozens of small acts of courage. One of the most courageous—and difficult—of these small acts is making the decision not to play. This means not only doing what you believe is right, but not participating in the bad behavior of others. If you let the office bully goad you into an angry outburst, you’ve lost. You’ve surrendered your dignity to someone who taunts for sport. If you hold a grudge against someone who has offended you and spend your days thinking of devastating come-backs and plotting subtle snubs, you’ve lost. You’ve surrendered irreplaceable time to someone who’s entertained by your seething. If you look away when someone else is being treated badly, you’ve lost. You’ve lost because you’ve surrendered your moral strength to someone who thrives on draining the strength of the helpless.

Deciding not to play takes real courage. It requires heart to confront, persevere and withstand the thousands of small assaults on your character. These aren’t dramatic moments. They’re the challenges of everyday living. But the consequences are disproportionately large. Surrender brings resentment, bitterness, anger and often as not, indifference. These form like walls around us and sap the pleasure out of life. Yet even small acts of courage can bring large rewards. Maintaining control in the face of adversity is liberating in and of itself. Knowing that your actions are aligned with your values and expressed in a spirit of good will eliminates barriers and opens you to new possibilities.

Nin was right. The consequences are real. Even small acts of courage expand your life, while small acts of cowardice shrink it. Over time the valence of either courage or cowardice will come to dominate. This is a new day. Is your life shrinking or is it expanding? Do you have heart?

XM vs Sirius Satellite Radio: Which One is Better For You?

November 23rd, 2007

You have probably heard of the two satellite radio companies, Sirius Radio and XM Satellite Radio, but you may not know a lot about them such as how much each costs or what radio talent is available on each. Many people are tired of listening to regular AM and FM radio stations for several reasons. It may be that they are tired of being bombarded with commercials. It may be that they do not like the programming available to them. On the other hand, it may simply be that they are in a rural area and tired of losing their radio signal all the time. Regardless of the reason, many consumers are turning to satellite radio as a viable alternative to regular radio stations.

Both companies are able to offer you static free radio due to satellites. XM (based in Washington D.C.) has two and Sirius (based in New York) has three satellites across the United States. Both companies offer users commercial free radio. Sirius offers over 125 channels and XM offers 160 different channels. There are dedicated channels for genres of music such as jazz, folk, country and pop for diehard fans. One cool feature of satellite radio is you can see the name of the artist playing as well as the song title. So never again do you have to spend time wondering just who sang that song you just heard! There are also channels for local weather and traffic, sports, comedy, women’s issues, talk shows, even old time radio shows. Soon, you may be able to see video as well as hear audio on your satellite radios.

There are also celebrity shows for both satellite radio companies. Martha Stewart recently signed a deal to launch a 24-hour radio channel on Sirius Satellite Radio. And most everyone has heard that Howard Stern is on Sirius as well - uncensored. Having gotten in trouble with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for his radio talk show, he decided to jump to the uncensored airways of satellite radio. Since his show started, the Sirius subscriber base has increased by at least 2.7 million. If have satellite radio and want to hear National Public Radio (NPR), you will have to subscribe to Sirius as they are the only one offering NPR. But XM is not to be left behind by Sirius. XM signed Snoop Doggy Dog, but the big coop is Oprah. In September of 2006, XM users will be able to tune in to Oprah & Friends. The new channel will offer broadcasts of The Oprah Winfrey Show, O, the Oprah Magazine and programming on fitness, health and self improvement.

All this sounds great, but what do you actually need to be able to receive satellite radio? You will need either a Sirius or an XM radio. This does not necessarily have to be a radio only for use in your car either. There are also home radios available today and there are even radios you can use both at home and in your car. The price for a basic radio offered by both Sirius and XM is as low as $49.99. You will also need to subscribe to a service. Both Sirius and XM charge $12.95 a month for you to receive satellite signals on your radio. However, if you have several cars with satellite radios, you can save by choosing the family plan available from both companies.

Just how popular is satellite radio becoming? In March of 2005, Hyundai announced that it would be the first automaker to put satellite radios in all of its models sold in the United States. Each Hyundai, including the popular Sonata, Santa Fe, and Elantra models, will come equipped with an XM satellite radio. When this was announced, shares in XM’s parent company rose by more than 8 percent. Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz also announced in March 2005 that Sirius radios would be a dealer-installed option on some of their models.

So which satellite radio should you choose? That depends on you. You should check out the stations available by visiting each company on the web before making a decision. Both offer radios at comparable prices, so it really comes down to what you want to hear. Are you a Stern fan? Then you have to go with Sirius. But if you love Oprah, you can only hear her on XM. Regardless of which one you choose, you will no doubt be very pleased with the services and reception of satellite radio.

Matt Barstow offers valuable tips and information about satellite radio players and services. Read his latest report answering the most popular questions about satellite radio.

Wedding Photography: How to Avoid Shooting Yourself in the Foot!

November 23rd, 2007

Wedding photography is the one discipline in the wedding industry that does not produce a product that you can enjoy on your special day. Instead, the money that you spend on wedding photography is an investment in capturing the joy of your wedding day for you to look back on for years to come. The trick is to coordinate everything so that your wedding photographer is able to actually capture everything that you want recorded.

Start by sitting down as a couple before you book anything and deciding specifically what you want wedding pictures to record. Coordinating and compromising your expectations may turn out to be challenging enough. If it is, imagine how challenging the wedding photographer would find it during the craziness of the actual wedding day when most everyone is dressed so that the wedding photographer can’t tell the difference between Aunt Betty and Betty Johnson that lives down the street (Chances are you will want a picture of Aunt Betty in some form where Mrs. Johnson might be a lesser priority). If deciding what the two of you want from your wedding photography is not a challenge, count your blessings and move ahead.

Once you have decided what posed pictures you want, take the time to speak with a couple wedding photographers and find out how much time and what kind of schedule a good wedding photographer will need to actually capture the pictures you want. This seems obvious, but often weddings are planned in such a way that the wedding photographer is put in the awkward position of having to try to keep up with what is going on, which could leave you with less than the best in wedding photography.

Chances are the wedding photographer will want to know how important it is to you that the groom does not see the bride before the wedding on your wedding day. If it is not important, there is probably a good chance you can arrange for all of the wedding party to show up at the church (or wherever the wedding ceremony is held) early to get most, if not all, of the posed wedding photography taken care of. Even if you do not want the bride and groom to see each other until she walks down the aisle, it might be possible to schedule your wedding so that most of the posed wedding photography are taken care of and only those pictures that include both the bride and the groom are left until after the wedding ceremony.

If not, however, you might need to consider a schedule that includes a considerable gap of time between the ceremony and the reception (In some parts of North America this is very common, while in other parts it is quite uncommon) to make sure your wedding photography turns out to be the photographs that you will treasure (and make sure that Uncle Floyd doesn’t disappear on you).

After, and only after, you have determined what schedule will be required for the photographer to give you the wedding photography that you are paying for should you actually go out and book your wedding location.

Round Pen: The Great Equalizer

November 22nd, 2007

Although many horsemen and trainers extol the virtues of the round pen, many horse owners still overlook just how powerful such a pen can be in developing or maintaining a relationship with a horse. This is a shame because it is truly what I call the Great Equalizer in a horse-human relationship. Perhaps that bears some clarification…

I’ve found many horse owners to be concerned about their physical strength as opposed to that of their horse. They fear they simply cannot firmly establish themselves as the alpha, or leader, of the relationship because the horse is so much stronger. Thus when their horse displays poor ground manners or commits an inappropriate action they are more prone to ignore it and hope it doesn’t develop into worse behaviors. After all, what choice do they have? The horse is just too strong.

The reality is that, except for the youngest of foals, a horse will always possess more raw strength than a human. Any attempts to overpower a horse with sheer strength are doomed to fail. Techniques such as raising your voice towards or slapping a misbehaving horse do not rely on strength – they are psychological. The horse does not want the conflict to escalate as it is uncertain exactly what your capabilities are, therefore it submits.

Of course there are exceptions, and truth be told such techniques are best used on already-trained horses or in situations where you cannot properly establish your authority due to lack of time or proper surroundings. The best way to instill respect and discipline into a naughty horse is by incorporating the Great Equalizer: the round pen.

Whereas many people view a round pen as a means for exercise (and it is true that it’s a great exercise tool), the true power behind the round pen is its ability to establish dominance in a completely non-forceful method. In the round pen, physical strength means very little. It is a quick and easy (as opposed to other methods) technique to make your alpha status known.

Allow me to share an example that will better illustrate why a round pen will serve you better than strength.

I once owned a willful young colt raised by a first-time mother, so unfortunately the mare wasn’t all that familiar with the need to discipline her colt. In fact although the colt was really quite a nice horse, he was unruly and tended to do whatever he wanted from day one. An experienced mare would not have permitted such antics, and had she “laid down the law” better from the first day the colt would likely have been a little less rambunctious.

Soon it came time to provide halter and lead training to this young upstart, and true to his form he made sure the task was trying. Although more than willing to walk with you, he felt there was little need to do so in an orderly fashion. If he “accidentally” bumped into you, or strayed so far from your side that you had to cling to the lead line with an iron grip, so be it. Snapping or jerking the lead line didn’t impress him much.

Even worse, as a colt develops into a mature stallion they often can become very “nippy.” This one was no different at first. Just as he did with his mother, he would sneak tiny bites and nips when you weren’t watching, and although there wasn’t mean intent behind them let’s face it – they hurt!

Anytime a horse strikes at you (and a nip should be considered a strike) it’s important that you retaliate with conviction so they think twice about doing so again. But when I would give this colt a fairly light slap he would almost smirk to himself and try to nip me again! Was he being mean-spirited? No! This colt grew up with no significant discipline from his mother and no fear of humans – we imprinted him from birth and thus he trusted us. Since he did not fear me, he thought I was engaging in some horseplay as any other colt would do.

A slap, as harsh as it sounds to us, is not always about force. It generally does not cause a horse much pain, but rather it is intended as a shock technique for a horse that already recognizes you as an alpha. Since this colt saw me as a playmate and equal, he possessed no fear of my slaps – my choice was to either escalate the physical force (which is generally not my first choice) or establish my dominance in a gentle way via the round pen.

Once I established that slaps or verbal growls would not have any effect on this colt, anytime he would nip at me or try my patience with his rebellious ways we would march straight to the round pen or enclosed paddock. While this colt found the notion amusing for the first five minutes or so, eventually the round pen will drain the “oats” from nearly any horse and he was no different.

With consistent round pen work, this colt soon learned that I wasn’t a simple playmate – I was his leader. Although we could still enjoy each other’s company, it had to be on terms that were agreeable to the both of us (no more black and blues!). Due to consistent round pen work, the leading, nipping and general disrespect issues became a thing of the past.

I hope my example of this young colt showed the folly of depending upon physical force to achieve your goals – “outgunning” a horse is not easy, practical or desirable. Never accept poor behavior and do not feel your authority is measured solely by your raw strength; both are mistakes that are all too commonly committed by horse owners. Instead consider the use of a round pen (or in a pinch you can use a longe line) and find out how easy training and discipline can be when using the Great Equalizer.
