Efficiency v Effectiveness: Lessons Learned While Shaving

January 26th, 2008

Here’s a parable which was inspired by sight of Santa’s beard.

I am a wet shaver. That means I apply shaving soap to my face with a shaving brush and before shaving, work it up to a lather using a vigorous rotational action to soften the morning’s stubble.

“Thank-you for sharing,” do I hear you say, “but what on earth has that to do with me, effectiveness or efficiency?”

I know it will surprise you, but there have been times in my life when money has been in short supply. One morning I remember reflecting with some satisfaction on how economical I was with the shaving cream. Each tube I made last for 6 months. Then I paused. A tube of shaving cream costs around $3. Each one I made lasted for 25 weeks. Wow, what incredible economy! But tell me, how much difference would it have made to our financial situation if I had used one tube every month, or even one every week? Frankly, not much! This is the difference between effectiveness and efficiency.

Was I using each tube efficiently? You bet, I might even have been able to get into the Guiness Book of Records. But how effectively was I impacting our monthly budget? Not at all. Now if I was able to find 5 or 6 or 10 or 50 initiatives all saving the same amount, I would begin to see something really meaningful. That would be effective and efficient!

So my challenge to you today is to ask, which are the areas of your life and business in which you are being incredibly efficient while contributing effectively nothing towards any of the goals which make your heart sing and what are you going to do about that?

Dealing with Aggression

January 25th, 2008

Sometimes life can be very confusing. We strive to walk a spiritual path, being accepting and forgiving. We smile and send blessings unselfishly to all that cross our path. We meditate and pray, but how do we deal with negative people when their wrath is directed at us?

We are all still human, and we have feelings, and yes, egos. When aggressive, angry people confront us, it is sometimes hard to keep that ego in check. Dealing with someone who is acting out of fear and insecurity can also be very tough. How do we gently thwart an abusive aggressor and still hold true to our beliefs and spirituality? It is a hard road, but I can offer some basic suggestion, which have helped my tremendously over the years.

Let spirit guide you. Always trust your higher self to guide you to the correct course of action. Listen to your inner voice and discern what your emotions are telling you. Separate ego thoughts of retaliation and defense from those loving, caring emotions of your soul. Remember the ego will always defend by attacking or withdrawing, so we must know and curb our ego and settle into our spiritual higher selves. When we think and act out of love, we will always pick the correct actions.

Try to See and agree with their point. We sometimes can understand the motives behind peoples actions if we give thought to their situation. Remember there is no right or wrong, there is only different points of view and opinion. So seek to see the other side of the disagreement. If you know the abuse towards you is unwarranted, and you cannot see the truth or motivation behind the situation, just calmly listen to what they have to say. You don’t have to agree with them, but do strive to know why they are acting the way they are. Listen intently to what they are saying. You can rebut with something like; “I understand that you are felling a certain way, and that I perhaps did something to provoke these feeling, but I did not intend to cause this situation. That was not my intention and I apologize. I hope that you feel better soon, and if there is something I can do to help, please let me know” Simple as that.

Let them speak, and be truly interested in what they say. The ego is a simple thing to understand. Give it your undivided attention, and it is happy. If you are sincere when listening to others, it satisfies the basic need of attention and they will be less aggressive (most of the time, anyway). Like I said before, sometimes people just want to be heard and noticed. So listen and let them know you see them and are truly interested in their plight, even if the problem is with you. When responding, always use their name in the sentence. This makes them feel important, and may lessen their anger even more. Responses like. “Lisa, I understand what you are saying.” Or maybe; “I can see where you are coming from, Lisa.” And remember eye contact! Nothing says you are interested in what someone says more than direct eye contact.

Accept responsibility for your actions. If you actually did do something to create the problem, and the complaint is legitimate, take responsibility for your actions. Apologize. Offer reciprocity or ask them if you can do anything to make them feel better. Most of the time, people just want to be heard and apologized to.

Do not accept their gift of angerkeep your cool. One of my favorite Buddha stories goes like this: One day a disciple came to the Enlightened One. This student was angry and confronted the Buddha. The Buddha sat quietly in meditation while his student raved on. Finally, the student asked the Buddha if he could hear him and way was he not reacting with anger? The Buddha opened his eyes and politely said; “If I do not accept your gift of anger, does it not still make it your own?” By keeping your cool and acting calmly during an angry confrontation, you will not give fuel to the fire. It takes two to tango, so if you do not armor up, the potential confrontation is merely one person venting. When in this situation, remember the other points in this article.

Defuse their anger… by apologizing and letting them know that you understand that your actions led them to this stress. If someone is about to push you, you can either back away or confront their advances. Confronting their advances only deepens the well of discord and creates a fight, but by intelligently backing off, their aggression is immediately defused. By removing the motivation for their advance, you can defuse the situation before it gets out of hand. When you feel your anger rising in defense of your ego, immediately take a deep breath and find your center. Know that the anger and negativity within your attacker is only a reflection of what is inside of them, and not inside you. You are not the negative things this person says about you. This only makes your abuser a person that needs to be negative out of insecurity and inner fears. Forgive them, for they know not what they do or how to act in accordance with universal law.

Knowledge is power. Know they really feel they have a reason for their negativity and aggression, but they do not know how to maturely convey the message to you. Thank them for letting you know how they feel. Let them know you appreciate them having the courage to let this matter out. Respond accordingly, but always reply out of love and respect and not retaliation, protection and fear.

The things people say may hurt our feeling, but as spiritual beings we can choose our actions to these negative situations and let it go. Your ego may want to let the person know they hurt you, but this is not the time. After the situation has been defused, you will have the chance at a later date to speak your truth. If the person is someone you whish not to speak with, a letter written from a place of love and compassion is a great tool to honor what you believe.

As we walk a spiritual path, we are not immuned from the negativity of the world, but we can choose to act in accordance with spiritual law. We will always be uplifted when we choose the right action and not retaliate in defense of our egos. The Bible says the meek will inherit the earth. A Course in Miracles expands that thought by saying that the meek will take over the earth with their passive inner strength. So remember these words and the above suggestions the next time you are confronted with aggression and anger. Be passivetake the high road, and let your spirit and inner strength rule the situation.

Understanding UK Bridging Finance

January 25th, 2008

Bridging finance, also referred to as “bridge loans” and “bridging loans”, have nothing at all to do with re-constructing the London Bridge. Bridging finance is typically a short-term loan that a business uses to supply cash for a real estate transaction until permanent financing can be arranged. The word “bridge” conveys the fact that the loan is designed to get you over a temporary obstacle.

A typical use for a bridge loan is to cover situations such as when a company needs to close on a new office building before having sold their old one. They would use the proceeds of the bridge loan to continue making payments on the old building until it is sold.

Bridging finance almost always requires that you pledge some sort of collateralas security against the loan. You could offer up commercial or private real estate that you own,or are in the process of buying, machinery and office equipment or even existing inventory. If you have outstanding business and personal credit, as well as an outstanding relationship with your lender, you might be able to secure your bridge loans on just a signature.

Because the need for bridging finance sometimes arises suddenly and without warning, it is a good idea to establish a relationship with a lender before the actual need arises. When you do this you can arrange to be pre-approved for a specified loan limit. Later, when the need suddenly arises, you won’t have to wade through all of the red tape. The typical term for a bridge loan runs from a fortnight to as long as two years. Of course, any terms can be negotiated and a motivated lender will work hard to match your needs.

Since bridging finance usually lasts for a relatively short period you may find that the interest rate you are being asked to pay is slightly higher than a more conventional type of loan. Lenders make their profit by charging interest across the life of the loan. The shorter the loan period the less interest they earn. As a result many lenders will often boost the rate by a 1/2 point or more. In general, the length of the loan, the amount of risk that is present for the lender, the quality of your credit history and the liquidity and value of your collateral all are used to help determine the interest rate.

Your best bet for securing a bridge loan at the most favourable rates and terms is to work with a qualified UK Commercial Mortgage Broker who understands the ins and outs of bridge loans. That way you can get your application in front of as many lenders as possible and end up with several who are willing to compete for your business.

IBD And Crohn’s Disease - What’s The Link?

January 25th, 2008

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a term used for a group of
illnesses affecting the digestive system. With roughly one
million sufferers in the United States, IBD is primarily
composed of two disorders: Crohn’s Disease and ulcerative
colitis.

What takes place with IBD, Crohn’s, and ulcerative colitis is
the body’s immune system has an exaggerated response to an
unknown bacteria or condition of the bowel system, releases a
large number of white blood cells to the affected area, and as a
result, the area becomes drastically inflamed. This swelling
causes ulcerations and injury to the bowel, as well as various
other negative side effects.

Although extensive research has been done, it is unclear what
causes the excessive immune response in IBD. Some believe it is
the body’s mistaken identification of good bacteria in the bowel
as being dangerous, while others believe it is a foreign agent
that triggers the immune system, which in turn, does not shut
down properly. Whatever the reason, this is a chronic condition
which will continue to be a problem for sufferers for an
extended period of time.

The primary difference between Crohn’s Disease and ulcerative
colitis is the location of the affected area. Crohn’s Disease
may affect any portion of the digestive system and may occur in
patches, with unaffected areas in between. However, Crohn’s
Disease primarily affects the end of the small intestine and the
beginning of the large intestine. On the other hand, ulcerative
colitis only affects the colon. Often, it is very difficult to
determine which form of IBD a patient is suffering from and
misdiagnosis is common.

Symptoms common of Irritable Bowel Disorder are diarrhea,
abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, and occasionally weight loss.
These signs are often present with Crohn’s Disease, as well as
uncreative colitis. As a result of blood loss, many sufferers
also become anemic. This can be especially devastating to
pre-existing conditions. Likewise, complications can arise from
blockages that occur due to excessive bowel swelling and the
presence of scar tissue. For this reason, surgery is sometimes
necessary to remove damaged areas of the digestive system to
avoid obstructions. There are also side effects experienced in
other areas of the body in addition to the digestive system.

For the most part, IBD and Crohn’s Disease are often used
interchangeably. However, it should be understood that Irritable
Bowel Disorder does not necessarily translate to Crohn’s
Disease. There are other forms of IBD that may affect sufferers
in much the same way.

Custom Designed Hats | Set The Trend

January 25th, 2008

If you would like to be a trendsetter, then wearing custom
designed hats is the way to go. Whether it is designed by you or
someone specializing in it, you are assured that your hat will
be a one of a kind. And when you venture out in public sporting
it, people will comment on it asking you where you bought it.
Surprise them by saying that you didn’t buy the hat, you
designed it.

The process of custom designing a hat is not as involved as you
may think. There are alot of companies that will do this for
you, even providing suggestions about certain styles, colors, or
modern fashion. View their gallery of past hats to see if you
like their work, and ask them some questions about the entire
process. The procedure will undoubtedly involve input from you
and there are some basic bits of information you can prepare
ahead of time to help. Here’s a small list of things to
consider:

1 - What style are you going to go with? Most companies will
have predefined styles for you to choose from, or you can design
your own. The cost will most likely be higher when designing
your own, but it is worth it if you want completely unique
attire.

2 - What colors are you going to use for the various parts of
it? There is a whole list of available colors to specify, but
you should decide up front which way to go with it. This may
depend on many factors such as what clothing you would wear with
it, what season of the year it will be used most, or if it will
be worn by ladies or men.

3 - What size or sizes will you need? There is alot of
information available online as to how to measure your head for
the correct hat size. Check with the company if you are unsure
and they can give you explicit instructions.

4 - Are you going to need any custom embroidery or emblems? You
should really consider doing this as it will add one more level
of uniqueness to your cap. Have an artist draw something up, or
do it yourself. This is a wonderful way to ‘finish’ the hat
off.

There is other information you will be required to submit,
depending on the manufacturer and type of hats you decide on.
The list above will get you going in the right direction and
speed up the design phase of the project.

What are some of the other uses for custom hats? If you are part
of a sporting team, or on a project at work you can have hats
custom designed for all of you. It will portray a united team to
all those you encounter, and bring everyone closer together.
This will help achieve the ultimate goal, whether that is
winning the championship or finishing the project ahead of
schedule. The positive effect on all cannot be overstated.

Hopefully before you purchase your next hat, you will consider a
custom designed one instead. For only a little more money and a
small amount of work on your end, you will end up with your own
creation that is a one of a kind.

Fight the Exam Stress

January 25th, 2008

Our life always offers us to take different exams - some or
other kinds of trials, where we have to prove our competence,
our well being, our determination and our IQ. Student having to
submit his philosophy term paper
http://www.superiorpapers.com/philosophy_term_paper.php ;
surgeon operating for the first time, unemployed, who came for
the interview to his potential employer - all of them have the
symptoms of the exam stress.

If you are a student, there is no need for me to explain what
exam stress is. Sleepless nights, troubled thoughts, loss of
appetite, rapid pulse, trembling hands - these are typical
manifestations of exam fear. Recent research has shown that it
affects all the systems of the human body: nervous, immune,
cardiovascular, etc. The scientists from Houston Medical School
proved in the course of their research that exam fear increases
the possibility of cancer. Unfortunately, the negative influence
of this phenomenon on the students’ body and their psychology is
underestimated nowadays. Social polls demonstrate that students
perceive the exams as a “duel of questions and answers”, as a
“severe torture” as “intellectual and emotional overload”.
Writing term papers (e. g psychology term paper
http://www.superiorpapers.com/psychology_term_paper.php) most of
them compare with “killing their time “. Yes, exams are
important for you as their results influence your social status,
your self -esteem, grants, your further perspectives of study
and probably your future professional career. Such factors as
long awaiting of the exam, some uncertainty when taking your
exam card ( it is like sink or swim ) and tough limit of time
for your preparation maximize emotional tension. Some foreign
and native scientists, having studied this area thoroughly have
concluded that from psycho hygienic position exams are
undesirable and they should be cancelled. At the same time there
is quite opposite point of view, stating that exams stimulate
brain activity and increase cognitive and mental activity.
American psychologist Sarazon determined that those students who
are afraid of exam can considerably improve their achievements
and even outdo those who are not scared of them. The only
necessary thing for it - is the encouraging attitude of the
professors - they should strengthen students’ self-confidence.
Surely, praise must prevail over scolding. Only then the exams
are useful. Every person has own optimal level of worry and
anxiety, which helps him/ her to achieve the best results. You
must learn how to control your stress and extra anxiety to
graduate from the university as a healthy person. I hope that
these small tips will be of practical help to you and you will
forget what exam stress is in the negative meaning of the word.
If exams cause great worry, if you have some symptoms of exam
stress (insomnia, rapid pulse, hands trembling and so on) you
ought to do something about it. Use breath meditations, repeat
formulas of autosuggestion, imagine the picture of ideal exam
atmosphere. You also should take three relaxing sessions and
reduce the level of stressful tension (a day before the exam,
before leaving home for university and half an hour before the
exam).

Screamin’ Demon

January 24th, 2008

That child of mine is turning into demon baby bit by bit everyday. Recently she has reverted back to her newborn self and doesn’t want to sleep through the night. First of all the child has never ever liked to go to bed. Ever. As a three month old she would stay awake all night, not crying, just laughing, playing, hanging out while I quietly prayed to God asking him what did I do to deserve the non-sleeping baby. I’ve pulled many a twenty-four hour night because she wouldn’t sleep and refused to lay down.

So, last night she wakes up around four in the morning and starts a hollering. I go and get her, thinking that if I lay her down with me she’ll go to sleep and then I can put her back in bed. No. Little Ms. Insomniac wants to play. So I let her no that that’s not an option and put her little butt back to bed. Of course that doesn’t go over well and she starts screaming bloody murder. I mean you’d think I was beating the child senseless.

Well this screaming match wakes my mother up and she just knows I’m abusing the baby or something. I say no, Little Ms. Insomniac just doesn’t want to go to bed. She insists that I stop her from hollering since she knows someone is going to call the cops since it sounds like I’m killing the baby. I politely remind her that said baby only cries like that ’cause grandma would go and pick her up when she cried saying, “Oh that baby isn’t sleepy. That’s not right to make her cry. Go and pick her up.” So grandma would go and pick the baby up…creating our current little monster.

Well of course mom doesn’t like that bit of information so she promptly marches in the room to tell little baby to “Hush right now. Stop all that screaming and go to bed.” Of course my little angel starts to scream more. So I relent. Go and pick her up and once again lay her down with me. Except my little munchkin decides that she wants to get up and walk around. This ticks grandma off who insists, “Oh no. She will not walk around. You’re going to bed little girl.” So she grabs her grandbaby and puts her to bed, closes the door and lets her precious grandbaby cry herself to sleep. At which point she refers to her as the Screamin’ Demon. Of course if she would have just let her do that in the beginning we wouldn’t have had all that drama and I would have been able to actually get some sleep.

Kirchner Improves Support Base in Congress

January 24th, 2008

Argentine President Nestor Kirchner managed to strengthen his support base in the Congress when final results from weekend elections showed his backers took control of the Senate and became the largest bloc in the lower house.

Results released on Monday had Kirchner allies winnings 40 of 72 seats in the Senate and taking about 100 seats out of 257 in the lower house, still well short of a majority but a boon for the president nonetheless.

The new Congress commences in December.

The mid-term elections were seen as a test of the president’s popularity as he prepares his reelection bid in two years.

Kirchner assumed office in 2003 amid Argentina’s worst financial crisis in decades, which left millions jobless. Since then, he has presided over marked economic improvement and a reduction in unemployment.

The victories for his allies should allow him to push for more social spending and reforms that would make him popular with voters come time for presidential elections. However some analysts speculate that the results from Sunday’s election don’t necessary guarantee Kirchner a smooth ride until then.

“This will help Kirchner in the second half of his mandate, but he will still need to be able to forge the alliances to pass his projects,” said Argentine analyst Rosendo Fraga. “It is yet to be seen where that support will come from.”

Other analysts contend the president is riding an artificial high of sorts based on the economy’s perceived improvement among Argentines following its collapse in late 2001, when thousands took the streets in protest and dozens were killed, prompting then-President Fernando de la Rua to resign.

“The economy buoys the administration’s electoral position because the economy’s deep structural problems are not understood by the Argentine public and the problem of inflation has not become serious enough to affect the people,” Argentine economist Agustin Monteverde told ISN Security Watch.

Meanwhile, former Argentine president, Carlos Menem, who many blame for Argentina’s economic collapse following his decade in power during the 1990’s, won a Senate seat representing his home province of La Rioja.

Kirchner and Menem were once allies, both hailing from the Peronist Party. But the former split from the Peronists in 2003 to run against Menem, forming his own Victory Party. This movement split the Peronist into two factions, forcing members and lawmakers to align themselves with Menem or the new candidate Kirchner.

Formerly a governor from Argentina’s Santa Cruz province, Kirchner arrived on the national stage with the support of then-President Eduardo Duhalde.

But over the last few months, Kirchner and Duhalde made a very public split, criticizing each other for their respective support for various candidates, which included both men’s wives.

Cristina Fernandez Kirchner won 44 per cent of the vote in mid-term elections while Hilda “Chichi” Duhalde took second place with 19.7 per cent of the vote.

Both will represent Buenos Aires province, considered the most influential senatorial seats in the Argentine Congress.

Should the New Vantage Score be Considered Reliable?

January 24th, 2008

Anyone who has monitored their credit report in the past will be aware of the difference that can be on each credit bureaus credit report versus FICO. They may even have the exact same information on all three credit bureaus credit report and have a wide range of credit scores. Now the three credit reporting agencies have announced their joint efforts to release the highly anticipated Vantage Score. Why highly anticipated? The small amount of information that has been released so far about this new credit score has many wondering how reliable of a score this will be. The traditionally accepted FICO score, used by most lenders when considering credit application of all types, has a credit score range of 500-850. The new Vantage Score will have a credit score range between 501-990 and have a letter grade attached to it ranging from and “A” to an “F”.

Many worry that this new letter value assigned to our credit reports may lead to the consumer getting less the acceptable rates on their loans. This letter system ranges in 100 point differences between each letter. (ie. “A” = 901-990, “B” = 801-900 etc. ) This seems like a huge range to be basing a credit application on. Typically in the past when you are given a FICO score, creditors see the score and base the loan rate on that. For example, many lenders will give you a great rate if your FICO score is 720 or above, if you had a credit score of 718, you may still get the great rate. Now if we are only approved of denied on a letter grade, there is little room for interpretation.

The three Credit Bureaus claim the development of the Vantage Score was because of societal demands for competition to the FICO score. FICO derives its score on information provided by the three Credit Bureaus, and has assured the public that it will be able to maintain its credit rating system and its partnership with the three credit bureaus. The real question, “Do we really need another credit report that we will be forced to monitor for misinformation, errors and identity theft?”

Recent studies have shown that nearly 70% of credit reports carry some type of error on them. Perhaps the three Credit Bureaus should be focusing more on providing accurate credit information on their credit reports instead of trying to take on FICO, a credit rating system that has become an accepted staple in financial lending.
