Citizens are Content with Mobile Broadband

July 15th, 2008

A research conducted by T-mobile has found out that at least half of UK citizens desire mobile access, allowing them to use service external from the household. Just this year, this number has greatly increased, displaying the genuine potential for mobile broadband internet in the United Kingdom.

According the poll conducted by YouGov, 44 per cent of the whole 2000 people preferred ubiquitous access, so that they could employ high speed internet from any location. Oppositely, the other 56 per cent do not mind having to locate specific connections while elsewhere. When inquired about the most convenient location of access points, 44 per cent choose their back yard, 32 per cent picked out holiday destination and another 8 percent chose the bar. In connection with these trends, T-Mobiles feel that mobile broadband aspiration’s is increasing in UK. According to their reports, at least one in four users of their services appreciates their service considerably.

People who always take their laptops with them on the move can use mobile broadband to stay connected all the time everywhere. While BT has millions of broadband customers all over UK, it also offers a service which can improve the speed by using broadband accelerator, if there is no improvement of at least half a megabyte, a refund is made. It costs £90 which brings in an engineer to your house. Since they make a refund there is no problem in trying it out.

What Can We Expect Of The Next Bunch Of Laptop Computers

June 27th, 2008

There’s been no slow down in the laptop computer business. This battery shortage issue is not going to aide things either. Despite credit crunches and other financial conditions laptop computer sales have increased year on year and it doesn’t look to decline any time soon. Whatever you do you’re dealing with technology that is progressing all the time so its hard to keep up with the latest trends.

A number of brands have been bringing out gaming laptops recently. If you’re a gamer with a small budget the great thing is that you can get a gaming notebook a lot less expensive now because the longevity is declining. Gaming laptops are no longer jeered by serious gamers because they are actually fairly good. Compact parts that perform better and are run cooler also means that gone are the ages of the massive laptops for gaming. Gaming performance between laptop computers and desktops should always be partial to desktops though, clearly because desktops are always going to be larger and more powerful. Everyone always craves to squeeze silly amounts of speed from tiny packages so I would assume thats where gaming laptops are destined.

Although the market share is ruled by manufacturers marketing via retail outlets I think the direct model and custom built laptops will always be here. The thought of aquiring after market parts appeals to some customers in my view. Certain market benefit because they only have buy what they need. Prebuilt laptop computers are designed for normal activies and not upto doing more specific tasks. For the niche users, custom laptops close the gap. There are plenty of small laptop resellers around that offer superior service. To me this is a large positive.

I am actually waiting to see what laptop computers come out in the future. The super low cost laptop niche looks to be starting all the buzz right now. This niche is already getting difficult competition and is getting saturated. In my view the market would react well to a 15 inch version modelled on the identical principles. There are laptops like this in the market already, just at big ticketdear prices. We’re seeing sleeker gaming laptops now and it looks this is set to keep on going. New portables are seen every year and I’m certain the next couple of months already holds a lot of promise for us techies.

In my view Rizeon have the best gaming laptops in relation to value.

Social Concerns of Embracing New Technologies Too Quickly

June 16th, 2008

Everyday in the news papers, TV and Internet we see new electronic gadgets and here of scientific discovery using the latest and greatest machines and gadgets. Many are concerned about this as millions spend hours in front of video games, television, talking on cell phones or haphazardly strolling into traffic dancing to the music on their new iPod. Many critics of new technology have stated;

“One social concern that we have been thinking about recently is our tendency, especially in the United States, to embrace technology just because it is available with little concern as to the consequences.”

Now then although this is of concern, I beg to differ in a few regards. Actually from what I can see this is not truly a fair assessment, because if you look at Japan and Europe and their personal tech devices they are ahead of the US Populations and their cell phones, gadgets and toys are superior to ours. Indeed, China would be too, except their country leadership fears it will over take them.

We should embrace the forward progression of the species when it makes sense. Although I am not a video game player; too busy living in the real world a warp speed, I can say that I had the very first cell phones and repeater phones in my business and they helped me immensely, in fact at the time, we did not even have fax machines and it was difficult to send information.

Technology does not kill society; people kill society. Technology therefore is neither good or bad, it just is. It can become either good or bad depending on how it is used. So before we condemn the latest and greatest technologies available in the present period, we ought to be considering that fact. Think on this in 2006.

What is ITIL? (And - More Importantly - What It Isn’t!)

June 8th, 2008

As a qualified and experienced ITIL Consultant - I’d like to set the record straight on a few points.

The IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) is an excellent set of best practices, carefully organized and edited to provide readers with information and structure for how to plan, implement, maintain and improve the service delivered to an organizations customers.

ITIL is owned by the Office of Government Commerce (OGC) and is copyright and trademark protected. The IT Service Management Forum (itSMF) is the leading, independent, not for profit, organization that is owned and run by it’s worldwide members - to promote and exploit the benfits of ITIL.

Oftentimes, when people first read one of the core ITIL books; ITIL is always classed as ‘common sense’ particularly by so called practitioners that say to themselves, “yeah, we do that already - so what?”

Well guess what. It IS common sense - but unfortunately it is found all to UNCOMMONLY.

At the heart of ITIL are a set of processes and procedures that any organization can review, customize and configure to their own content. These have been written and enhanced over 15 years from a variety of ITIL/Service/Process experts. This is the whole point of ITIL - it’s a best practice starting point - to be considered, re-worked and carefully implemented into an organization to match that businesses needs. No verbatum, to-the-letter-of-the-book, style implementation will ultimately be more than 50% effective for any organization. Every place is different. Every Business is different. Every customer is different.

Over the last ten years, many thousands of IT Service professionals have provided feedback and helped to enhance the core OGC ITIL texts - so you can rest assured that it is THE #1 place to start when implementing strategic IT Service Management.

Moreover, recently, ISO20000 has been ‘fast tracked’ through the International Standards Committee to become the worldwide standard for IT Service Management. A lot of ISO20000 requires key aspects of ITIL to be implemented, namely IT Service Support and IT Service Delivery processes. Note: ISO20000 does NOT specify that ITIL is a pre-requisite for certification - but it is the logical starting place for best practice adoption.

A few home truths about ITIL - having observed its implementation in various guises into many clients over the last 10 years:-

- It requires investment in time, effort and people’s energy - therefore there’s a cost
- It requires capable and experienced people - people who are ITIL foundation and ITIL managers certified
- It requires a transformation programme to own and guide the effort of many smaller, but still significant projects.

- It requires active, senior buy-in. No buy-in - no ITIL. It’s that harsh.

- It therefore requires to be understood at a senior level and therefore the ROI in ITIL must be deliberately planned and realized
- It’s ‘transformational’ change - so that means people change roles; people have new ways of working and communicating; the organization begins to hardwire the voice of the customer into the heart of IT/Technology

Some further considerations:-

- It’s tough to do; people play politics with their empires; people protect their functional silo’s; people resist change

- It takes time; to plan, to design, to build, to test; to ‘DO’

Essentially you have to change the ‘planes engine whilst the ‘plane is still in flight - meaning - YOU have to transform the way Technology delivers service - without impacting the quality and availability of Service.

ITIL’s all about Service. Not Tools. Not Technology. Not Process. In my opinion, they are just by-products of what the end goal is.

[Incidently - there’s NO such thing as an ITIL compliant tool. ITIL is a set of best practices - not a ’standard’ that can be complied to. Vendors always incorrectly say their tool is ‘compliant’. Gartner agrees with me on this.]

ITIL makes you think deeply about who’s doing what, when, how, with what tools, how well are they doing, could they do better, how does the customer perceive us… these are just some of the constant questions that are raised EVERYDAY when you are implementing and running an ITIL based Organization.

These are the RIGHT questions for IT Service Success!!

The benefits of ITIL are many - but here are a few of commonly reported ones: -

- ITIL breaks down functional silo’s, gets people and information flowing; gets people talking; all for the benefit of the Customer (service recipient).

- ITIL helps to re-organize IT/Technology to be Customer focussed. The roles, responsibilities, information and reporting requirements all converge to push meaningful and timely information towards the right Customer interfaces.

- ITIL makes people think from a Service perspective; not a technology silo perspective.

- ITIL reduces costs and helps with automation to further reduce cost. ITIL also lets you do more with less over time - avoiding future staffing cost increases.

- ITIL can be rolled out in ‘groupings’ of best practice to achieve organizational ‘quick wins’

- ITIL should be fun. A way of doing things around here with people fully involved and included in key decisions.

It boils down to this…

Will the person sitting on a seat do the right thing at the right time at the lowest possible cost - in order to play their part in delivering the service that the customer pays for - keep on doing it right first time - and improve things where-ever possible?

Holy Grail?

No.

Already being achieved?

Absolutely! In lot’s of different companies around the world. ITIL’s been around for years!!

About The World Of Computer Building

May 23rd, 2008

If you are having trouble with your computer and would like to have it up graded. Or if you would like to just upgrade your computer for better performance. For gaming or graphic solutions or for better multitasking endeavors.

If you have a computer a lot of the basic parts in that computer are reusable, and not necessary to change out. Basic components would be the CD/DVD Rom A-Drive, HDD, and a lot of times the memory. By using the computer parts that are reusable you can save yourself hundreds of dollars, and be able to have the perfect computer system for your needs.

A computer tech service can cost hundreds of dollars for the most simple of problems. Just to take the side off the computer will cost an individual no less then fifty dollars. Let’s say you are having a simple problem with your computer. Maybe one of your drives in the computer will not boot up. This can cause problems that will make the computer act very bad. So bad that you would think there was a major problem with your computer system. But because you don’t know or understand how the computer works, and that the computer components all work together, and are tied into the motherboard of the computer. Or mite be hooked on the same cable that is hooked to the computers motherboard. You could in turn end up with a four hundred to seven hundred dollar computer repair bill. For a simple five dollar computer cable, or a thirteen dollar A-drive or a thirty dollar cd-rom drive.

The bottom line is this I have seen and talked to people how have spent as much money to repair their computer as it would of coast to buy a new computer. Myself I can’t really understand that reasoning. Maybe it’s because there is information on the computer that you really don’t want to loss. Well let me just say this. If that’s the case then you need to know that there are ways to retrieve that information off that computers hard drive. You don’t have to loss that information. You just simply have to go after it. Unless the computers hard drive is shot, and then the information is lost any ways.

Building a computer is not hard you just have to know what the computer components are, and where the computer components go inside the computer. You don’t have to know in great detail of how each computer component works. You just need a basic simple understanding of what each computer component dose.

Robert Emler: If you would like to lean just how simple it is to partake in building, and repairing your own computer. Something that will in no doubt save you hundreds of dollars go to. http://pcextream.com If you still would rather not go down this rout of computer building. But you would like to save hundreds of dollars by simply upgrading your computer system. I would be more then happy to help you do this. For a fee way less then you local computer tech shop would charge you.

This is all you need to do. Provide me with the information. Including any parts that you have that are reusable. Along with the amount of money you are willing to spend to achieve this. I will then get back with you, and let you know what I can do for you. If I can’t save you at least two hundred dollars or more towards the purchase of a new computer then I will let you know of your options and benefits of going either way.

Once Upon a Time … How to Facilitate Change in Others

May 7th, 2008

Once upon a time … all stories began that way. At least around my house. “Tell me a story,” I would beg my mother, or my grandmother, and they would sit back, with a twinkle in their eye, often pulling me into their lap, and begin … “Once upon a time.” [sigh]

Key to the experience, there was no eye contact. I sat beside them, or on their lap, or they were lying down beside me at bedtime, or driving the car. It wasn’t an in-your-face experience. This is part of it. Part of what? Let me tell you a story first, and then I’ll tell you about telling stories.

So settle back, close your eyes, and let’s begin …

Once upon a time there was a wise and powerful king who had two vassals. One, Sir Rodrick, was known for being stingy and mean. The king sent him out on a task. He was to travel the kingdom and find one good person.

Sir Rodrick returned after many days saying in all the kingdom he hadn’t been able to find one good person. He said he had found some who did some things that appeared to be good, but it was an illusion, and underneath they were all selfish and wicked. As to a truly good person, there were none.

Next, the king sent Sir Roland out on a mission. Sir Roland was known for his generosity and love for his people. His task was to travel the kingdom and find one bad person.

Sir Roland failed as well. He returned many days later saying in all the kingdom he had not been able to find one bad person. He had found some who inadvertently went astray, temporarily, but underneath they were all good and kind. As to a truly bad person, there were none.

AND THE MORAL OF THE STORY IS …

What do I have to say about this story? Not a thing. Anything I say would damage it for you. It speaks for itself, and it speaks to you in its own way, and that’s the way good stories are. The ones that begin with “once upon a time…”

MYTH, METAPHOR & MAGIC

In a fascinating article called “Myth, Metaphor and Magic,” Patrice Guillaume explores the power of the Three Ms as related to the functions of the left and right brain. Our left hemisphere is analytical, logical and linear; it sees the trees and not the forest. Our right hemisphere is highly specialized to manage complex relationships, patterns, configurations and structures; it cannot see the trees for the forest. The two hemispheres function well together, and not so well alone.

Here’s how different they are. In research with individuals who’ve lost the function of one hemisphere or the other, it’s been discovered that when told to “match’ a picture of a cake, the left hemisphere will match it functionally - choosing a spoon or a fork. The right hemisphere will match it according to appearance - choosing something with the same shape, such as a hat.

SPLIT BRAIN RESEARCH

In their book “Left Brain Right Brain,” Michael Gazzaniga and Joseph LeDoux draw the conclusion that the major task of the left hemisphere (our “verbal self”) is to construct a reality based on our actual behavior. The left brain doesn’t always know why we’re doing something. “It is as if the verbal self looks out and sees what the person is doing, and from that knowledge it interprets a reality.”

So, somewhat simplified, you could say our behaviors originate in the right brain, while our left brain is left to justify our actions. I’m sure you know the feeling of trying to explain something you did, when you really haven’t a clue!

Now, follow this line of reasoning:

IF our behavior originates in the right brain (and is only explained intellectually in the left);

AND we want to change someone’s behavior (as a parent, coach or therapist, for instance) or change our own;

THEN why not save our selves some trouble and talk to the right brain, not the left brain.

Makes perfect sense. But … if the right brain doesn’t use words, how do we communicate with it? The answer is …

ANALOGIC COMMUNICATION

Analogic communication includes figurative language, puns, jokes, metaphor, poetry, art, music, ambiguities and allusions as well as non-verbal communication, such as posture, gestures, facial expressions, voice inflection, tone of voice, and the sequence, rhythm and cadence of the words themselves.

It’s descriptive, the stuff of myth, metaphor, dreams and “once upon a time” type stories.

In a way that’s hard to explain, because “explaining” is what the left brain does, information take into the right hemispheres has far more effect on behavior. It’s the way to “reach” someone, to “touch” them. Intuitively we know this.

Along with this is the NOT-IN-YOUR-FACE experience. When we get in someone’s face - literally and figuratively - the guard of the Other goes up. Down comes the reflector shield, and up come the defenses. We turn off and tune out. When a story is delivered, without the intimidation of eye contact, the effect is different.

DOES IT WORK?

Want someone to get up and help you clean house? Try playing a march by John Philip Sousa. Go here: http://www.laurasmidiheaven.com/Patriotic.shtml and play “Stars and Stripes Forever.” Oh yes! (My son and I used to clean house to this when he was a preschooler. Not a problem.)

THE MESSAGE

One of the important things about myths and stories is that the person brings to it his or her own experience. Most of the fairytales, folklore and parables we’ve passed down through the ages are dense with meaning we can’t quite put our finger on. It doesn’t matter; we still ‘get’ them. I’ve never heard someone say, “What does that mean?” after such a story. More typically they are lost in thought, off in their own world which has been deeply touched.

Consider for instance the fairytale of “The Poor Little Match Girl.” I’ve heard this interpreted as a feminist warning against inaction. The child is alone and freezing to death, huddled in a corner, with only matches to burn to keep herself warm.

Eventually she uses them all up and an angel arrives to take her off to heaven. She has frozen to death. The feminist interpretation is that it’s a warning against, I guess, staying at home barefoot and pregnant.

Whatever someone else’s interpretation, here’s how I took it as a child:

I compared myself to the little girl in the story. I knew I was well cared for, smart, strong and brave. I felt sorry for the poor little match girl who must’ve been beautiful (as all fairytale children are beautiful), but had been left alone in the world without the resources she needed and I had. I wanted to help her and people like her and knew that I could and would.

Instead of thinking “why isn’t she doing something?” or “what could she have done?” or even “I would’ve done this and this,” I was thinking, “I’ll never be in that position myself, and I know how to help others who are.”

What some readers interpret as a dire warning against inaction, I took as inspiration - an affirmation of my resourcefulness, and a call to action. I was the Big Sister, after all, accustomed to comforting and caring for my younger siblings. It was no big deal to me.

I also felt that since I (or some other helpful person) hadn’t been there to help her, how nice it was to know that when she died, she was carried off to heaven in the loving arms of an angel. If not love and comfort in one plane, then love and comfort in another. What a warm, wonderful world.

Yes, I was that kind of kid, and yes, I remember those reactions clearly, though they were many decades ago.
We bring to the story what we have to bring to it, and we take away with us what we need to take away with us.

USE IT

If you are very clever, you can learn to construct stories to fit your needs in communication. They can be as short as a metaphor or a simile — “You’re badgering me,” or “You act like there’s no tomorrow,” or “You were my knight in shining armor, darling,” or “Sorry, but I’m taking off the red shoes.”

And when you so, use that special tone of voice, the once that gets into the right brain. Don’t know what it is? Let me teach you.

But don’t mistake this for manipulation. It isn’t like hypnotism, either. You can’t control another person, nor is it nice to try, and this isn’t designed to do it. Rather, it pulls on what’s already there, and what the person is inclined toward in the first place, or it wouldn’t be happening.

Consider it more like saying something without the barriers and obstacles your own left-brain puts out in your own path that fogs your communication. Communication is a two-way street.

You can also use the many myths and stories already out there. Classic myths have endured for a reason; they talk about human nature and the challenges we have faced since time immemorial that transcend time, gender, age and culture.

“Cinderella,” for instance, is very good for little girls who have mothers who make them do things they don’t want to. Several different cultures have Cinderella-type stories, because every little girl has a wicked stepmother, yes?

I, on the other hand, had most of my conflicts with me dad, and my favorite fairytale was “The Twelve Dancing Princesses.” You know, the one where the girls get locked up in their rooms every night by their FATHER, the king, but sneak out to go dancing [wink wink] and where at the end, the handsome soldier chooses the ELDEST SISTER to be his bride, not the baby [wink wink].

APPLICATIONS

If you’re a coach, therapist, teacher, manager, or even a partner in a relationship, consider using myth, metaphor and magic to communicate. If you’ve been around the block a few thousand times, you know that in-your-face doesn’t work. In fact, “You can talk till you’re blue in the face …” Words - left-brain type words - don’t work. Try something different.

Studying The EQ Foundation Course© (see my website) can help you, and is taught from a right-brained standpoint.

One last thing before you leave. Take a look at this brain candy produced by The International Association of Intercultural Education: www.bigmyth.com . Then ponder it (right brain), don’t think about it (left brain).

Laptops For Gaming?

May 5th, 2008

As PC’s get smaller and laptops increase in power the line between them gets blurred unless you look at the extreme sides of the scale. Desktop PC’s are coming in increasingly smaller packages and notebooks, especially those meant for gaming and desktop replacements are becoming bigger and more powerful. It’s getting to the point where the performance of laptop computers is able to match desktops. The price difference is also not as big as it used to be either. Notebook PC’s have declined considerably in price and this makes them a more appealing alternative as they have the added versatility of being wireless and mobile. No need to keep them stationed in any particular area as with desktop computers that’s for sure. There is also a level of privacy and that personal feeling with laptops as they are not usually something shared with others. Desktop computers tend to be family purchases for all members of a household.

When purchasing notebooks you can purchase from the global brands or from the smaller resellers. Both have their own merits. I guess you get security when buying from the larger manufacturers. However more often then not, customer service is lacking, the internals are also nothing special, processing power costs a premium and there isn’t much choice of gaming laptops with the majority of them. Local resellers can basically give you the specification you desire. You can get all of the high spec internals without paying premiums for them. The support is more personal and you feel cared for. The main thing going against them is that they could potentially go into administration so it’s important to ensure you have a good warranty in place.

The processor, ram and video card are things to pay attention to when you are buying gaming laptops. You need a cpu with a minimum speed of 2GHz and it must be dual core. Minimum requirements for RAM are 2GB if running Windows Vista but more is recommended. To play games you need to have a dedicated graphics card. Usually you get 256MB dedicated graphics ram. I think an Nvidia 8600M card should be good for playing all the new games well. Nothing but the most powerful graphics processors will do for extreme gamers.

Retail or online? Where is the best place to find your gaming laptop or any laptop? Bigger brands would prefer you go via retail but honestly there is so much choice online and its all much lower priced than retail. Fact is you will find it very difficult to find the same variety of high spec laptops offline and even if you do you will end up parting with too much.

Spyware & Business Computers

May 3rd, 2008

I. BACKGROUND

Spyware is typically not a virus, so many anti-virus programs are not equipped to block, detect, or eliminate it. Spyware is not typically a cookie that you can simply delete through your browser tools.

Often installed on your computer without your consent, spyware will:

A. Monitor your computer activity and then report it to third parties.

B. Actually and physically control your computer use.

C. Send you pop-up ads.

D. Redirect your computers automatically to undesirable websites.

E. Record your keystrokes and report them to third parties as a prelude to identity theft.

II. SPYWARE SIGNS

All business computer users should understand the signs of spyware, and then take the appropriate steps to delete it. The clues that spyware resides on your business computers include:

A. A barrage of pop-up ads.

B. A hijacked browser.

C. A sudden or repeated change in your computer’s Internet home page.

D. New and unexpected toolbars.

E. New and unexpected icons at the bottom of your computer screen.

F. Keys that no longer seem to work.

G. Random error messages.

H. Sluggish or slow performance when opening programs or saving files.

III. IMMEDIATE ACTION STEPS

If a business suspects its computers might contain spyware, it should immediately take three steps:

A. Get anti-spyware software, such as Spybot Search & Destroy or Ad-Aware.

B. Use the software to perform an immediate scan.

C. Delete any software programs the anti-spyware program suggests.

D. Set it to automatically scan on a regular weekly basis.

IV. THE GOOD NEWS

The good news is that a business can prevent spyware installation. You should consider taking the following steps:

A. Update your operating system and Web browser software. Your operating system vendor may offer free software “patches” to close holes in the system that spyware exploits.

B. Download free software only from sites you know and trust. It can be appealing to download free software like games, peer-to-peer file-sharing programs, customized toolbars, or other programs that may change or customize the functioning of your computer. Be aware, however, that some of these free software applications bundle other software, including spyware.

C. Don’t install any software without knowing exactly what it is. Take the time to read the end-user license agreement (EULA) before downloading any software. If the EULA is hard to find or difficult to understand think twice about installing the software.

D. Minimize “drive-by” downloads. Make sure your browser security setting is high enough to detect unauthorized downloads, for example, at least the “Medium” setting for Internet Explorer. Keep your browser updated.

E. Don’t click on any links within pop-up windows. If you do, you may install spyware on your computer. Instead, close pop-up windows by clicking on the “X” icon in the title bar.

F. Don’t click on links in spam that claim to offer anti-spyware software. Some software offered in spam actually installs spyware.

G. Install a personal firewall to stop uninvited users from accessing your computer.

H. A firewall blocks unauthorized access to your computer and will alert you if spyware already on your computer is sending information out.

The Power of Namaste’

April 12th, 2008

I honestly am not sure why this hit me so strongly, but it did.

“Namast is a salutation which essentially means that I greet and acknowledge the God-Spirit that resides within you.

“Ram Dass describes it this way [Namast means] “I honor the place in you in which the entire universe dwells. I honor the place in you which is of love, of truth, of light, and of peace. When you are in that place in you, and I am in that place in me, we are one.”

“This greeting is usually done with a gesture of hands held close to the heart in prayer position. It is a a wonderful way of expressing love and respect for our fellows.”

Wouldn’t it be absolutely amazing if we could relate to every person who comes into our lives in this way? The old man driving 50 in a 65 zone when you’re running late getting your son to baseball practice; the cashier who has obviously not had a good day; the ex-spouse who seems determined to make your road bumpy; the telemarkter who calls in middle of dinner; the Burger King employee who forgot to put your fries in the bag; and on and on and on.

I don’t expect myself to be perfect, but I would love to grow in love, compassion, non-judgement and tolerance to the point that I am ‘living Namaste’. In this world of fighting, slaughter, lying, cheating, mistrust, disrespect…maybe the way we truly heal a planet and a people is to each grow to ‘be Namaste’ - one person at a time, one cashier at a time, one ‘ex’ at a time and one prayer at a time.

Mercury automated testing

March 25th, 2008

What’s all this test automation about? Since the millennium bug
there has been an explosion in test automation. The expansion of
automated tools from vendors such as Mercury Interactive, IBM
Rational, Segue and others has really delivered automated
testing into the heart of just about every major organisation in
the western world. And this can be seen to continue with new
development methodologies such as eXtreme programming which has
test automation at the heart of its design.

So why Automate? Well, the major benefits are:

Speed Automated tests can run much faster than the manual
equivalent, so more testing can be achieved in a smaller time
frame. It is not unusual to see regression suites that take two
weeks manually reduced to 24 hours with test tools!

Consistency/repeatability Automated tests can be repeated over
and over and will always perform the test exactly as recorded.
Manual testers can easily make mistakes or perform the same test
slightly differently when repeated.

Unattended - reduce cost Once developed, the automated testing
can be executed unattended overnight, so repeating the testing
requires very little resource or cost.

Audit trail The tests are stored as automated scripts and the
test results are stored for every execution of the tests
providing a full audit trail of all testing performed.

Improved Test Coverage As the test pack develops, more & more
tests can be added and as the execution time is much faster than
manual testing and less resource intensive, more testing can be
completed, ensuring greater coverage of the application under
test.

Free up testers to perform other tasks If the structured testing
is automated, testers will hopefully have more time to perform
other types of testing (accessibility, usability, ad-hoc/random
testing) which commonly get pushed aside.

Some testing may only be possible with automation For example
how do you manually simulate 5000 concurrent customers
performing transactions on your on-line web site?

What types of tools are available? Functional/regression
automated tools These tools capture user interaction with the
application under test and can then be replayed. However they go
beyond this and allow you to data-drive tests, to capture the
state of your application whilst performing business processes
and provide fully-featured development environments allowing you
to manipulate applications in almost any kind of way. Tools such
as Mercury’s WinRunner or QuickTest Professional demonstrate the
pinnacle of what these kinds of tools are capable of.

Load/Performance tools These are used to emulate multiple
(concurrent) users performing tasks against your application,
for example if your business has an on-line banking system - how
many users can it support? What kind of performance will it
deliver under load? Where are the bottlenecks? All of these
kinds of questions can be answered using automated load testing
tools such as Mercury’s LoadRunner.

Test Management Tools such as Mercury’s TestDirector or Quality
Center offer Test Management facilities; a central repository to
store test requirements, test scripts, execution results and
defect tracking, integrating seamlessly with the automated tools
such as WinRunner, LoadRunner and QuickTest Pro.

So what are the pitfalls to test automation? It is easy for
these tools to become ’shelfware’ as purchasers do not consider
the complexity and power of some of these tools. They all share
a steep learning curve, so some time and money need to be
invested into getting your team up to scratch with the tools.

Some solutions to good automation implementation:

Technical Testers. Ensure your testers have a reasonable grasp
of technology, some programming experience would be ideal.

Training, Training, Training. Good training programs are offered
for these tools and are well worth the investment. The trainers
usually have good project background experience and can
demonstrate how the tools should be used and explain the
pitfalls.

Hand-holding for the basic infrastructure. Following the
training it is well worth getting a consultant in for a few days
or weeks to build the basic automated infrastructure, provide
on-site training against your application and to develop
templates for your team to expand the test automation out from.
They can achieve in weeks what could take you months to learn.

Tools such as LoadRunner, WinRunner, QuickTest Pro,
TestDirector, Quality Center can provide a great return on
investment in the longer term, but to make them effective do
invest in training and assistance at the beginning.
