15 Good Programming Habits

November 14th, 2007

1. Before sitting down for coding, you must have formal or a paper-napkin design of the solution to be coded. Never start coding without any design unless the code is trivial one.

2. Good code documentation is as important as good knowledge of a programming language. Write brief logic for each major block of your code as comments in source code file itself. Its good to mention creation and modification dates of your program along-with why modification was required.

3. Maintaining versions of your program is another important task. Some present-day programming tools already have a built-in version management. Whenever you make any change to your program, they save its copy as .bak file.

My approach is to maintain 3 versions of a program. Say, I have a file program.c which is used by other project team members also. I copy this file as program.c.old as backup and make another copy as program.c.wrk where I do modifications. When modifications are successfully compiled, replace program.c with .wrk file.

You can also append a date or some explanation phrase to your program versions like program260505.c or programReadFnWrking.c .

4. If your project contains multiple source files then maintain a README file stating purpose of each source files, data files, intermediate and log files (if any). You may also mention the compilation and execution steps.

5. Ever wondered why your IF statement is not working as it should do. May be your are using single equal i.e. “=” instead of “==” in the condition check. A good approach is to write condition in reverse order. So, your condition should read something like this:

if ( 10==i) ….
So, if you put single equal sign by mistake then it will be detected at compilation time only as an error.

6. While using loops and conditional statements, always first put closing braces corresponding opening braces and then write the inner statements i.e.

1) for(int i=0;i<10;i++)

2) {

4) printf(”i=%d\n”,i);

3) }

The numbers at the starting of each line indicate sequence of writing loop code.

7. Avoid using magic numbers. For example, instead of writing

circleArea = 3.14 * pow(radius,2);

use following code:

#define PI 3.14

circleArea = PI * pow(radius,2);

8. Use meaningful variable and function names. For e.g. instead of using ‘r’ use ‘radius’ to represent radius of a circle. Similarly, function name ‘calculateArea’ is better than any cryptic short name. In a hurry, we may use short variable names but the time saved leads to double wastage of time later when you guess for what that short variable name stands for.

9. Using print statements for later debugging is a good habit. But, removing them when final code is ready is, sometimes, a risky task. So, make a function that displays debugging information passed to it. When your final version is ready, simply comment the internals of this function. So, this requires changes only at one place.

10. Once you are done with coding, start optimizing your code. Some of the variables you declared earlier may not be of use at this stage. Similarly, statements which are not loop dependent can be moved out of loop block. Sound knowledge of compiler can also help in optimizing the code further.

11. With good knowledge of your operating system and hardware, you can improve performance of your program in terms of resource requirements etc.

12. Always indent your code for clarity and easy readability.

13. You will also like the idea of organizing project files in into various folders like SOURCE, HEADERS, MAKE, EXES etc.

14. Study the code written by others. This will bring to you new programming techniques and what approach they have followed for the task for which you have also coded.

15. Last but not least important, take backup of your source-code files so that your effort don’t go waste if hard-disk crashes or a similar mishappening occurs.

Software For Your Hard-Drive.

November 11th, 2007

All your software is stored on a hard-drive. But how about software FOR your hard-drive - private disks, partition managers, disk defragmenters? Here is the scoop on the latest tools.

Paragon Partition Manager

The program is suitable for both professionals and home users. Basic partitioning operations are: resize, convert, move, split, copy, and mount partitions. You can restore accidentally deleted partitions. It also offers free space redistribution and hard drive defragmenter. It lets you install several separate operating systems on one hard drive. The Paragon Boot Manager is included into the package. Smart Partition technology that performs all operations without losing a single byte of data. Supported file systems are FAT 16/32, NTFS, Ext2/3FS, and ReiserFS.

Dekart Private Disk

Dekart Private Disk creates one or more virtual disks on your hard drive and/or other external storage devices. Once a user creates a virtual encrypted disk, that disk is assigned a new drive letter and appears to the user like any other system drive (like the A: or C: drive). When the disk is mounted, the data is automatically encrypted and decrypted when the user writes or reads this data respectively. Dekart Private Disk encrypts and decrypts all data stored on the encrypted disk with virtually no performance penalty. When the disk is unmounted, either manually or by logging out of Windows, the secure data it contains becomes completely unreadable and undetectable by the operating system.
Dekart Private Disk allows you to store your information on a host of media such HDD, FDD, CD, CD/R, CD/RW, MO, MD, ZIP-disks, flash drives, all types of flash memory cards, PDAs, and even digital cameras. You have the flexibility to allow multiple users to share a single PC.

HDD Regeneration

If your hard drive is damaged by bad sectors, it is not only becomes unfit for use, but also you risk losing information stored on it. If you suspect that your hard disk drive is damaged and contains bad sectors, you have difficulties to copy data from your disk, your operating system is unstable or you unable to boot to Windows altogether - don’t rush to throw out your disk and don’t think that your important information is irretrievably lost. HDD Regenerator will regenerate your hard drive by magnetic reversal. As a result, not readable damaged information will be restored. With all this going on, the existing information will not be lost! HDD Regenerator regenerates hard disk drives exclusively at physical level. It ignores file system and can be used with FAT, NTFS or any other file system, and also with unformatted or unpartitioned disks.

Reliable File and Folder Sharing in Windows Xp

October 28th, 2007

This tip is on sharing files and folders on a local network in Windows XP. It has been tested on Windows XP Professional (with and without SP2).

Many users of WinXp have experienced difficulty in sharing files and folders over our college network whether or not simple file sharing is enabled. The approach that I have found to work consistently is:

1. Disable simple file sharing from My Computer –> Tools menu –> Folder Options –> View tab –> Advanced Settings

2. Open Control Panel –> Administrative Tools –> Services. Enable the Server service by making startup Automatic or Manual. This is a standard service needed for sharing files and folders under WinXp.

3. Open Control Panel –> Administrative Tools –> Computer Management. Scroll to System Tools –> Shared Folders –> Shares. From Action menu, select ‘Add share’ and follow the instructions.

4. You may also want to add users to Administrator or other groups for shared folder access. Under Computer Management, scroll to Local Users and Groups. To add user to Administrator group, select the group name and choose Add from Action menu. It can also be used to add domain users as local admins.

Sharing files on computers directly connected to Internet is not recommended. However, restricting access to specific users using above procedure mitigates security risks.

PDA Cell Phones – The new generation of wireless phones

October 24th, 2007

It’s time you know what the latest technological gadget is. In fact, this new toy is buzzing everywhere nowadays. PDA cell phones are popping up more and more in the market place. Young or old, maybe you should be asking yourself whether this new cellular phone is something you should consider owning? Well, if you’re unsure about whether a PDA mobile phone is the right piece of hardware for you, don’t be. Read on and find out everything you need to know about these great wireless phones!
Many consumers understand the value of owning a mobile phone today. They are really convenient and easy to use. We almost take them for granted because they’re extremely affordable to own and maintain. They come with tons of loaded features to help make our lives that much easier. They store phone numbers and addresses, can link you to the Internet, can download your email on a whim, and allow you to chat on Instant Messenger with your closest loved ones whenever you want. Bored? Not when you own a cellular phone, equipped with the latest games, cool polyphonic ring tones, and picture messaging. Use it to take notes, and keep you up to date with important meetings. There is simply nothing that a cell phone cannot do nowadays. They even take pictures and video images – and to think, these nifty little toys can be held, literally, in the palm of your hand.
Well, the newest trend to hit our palms is the PDA wireless phone – better known as a personal digital assistant. Imagine combining the convenience of a cell phone with the reliability of a PDA – it’s a match made in heaven! Here’s why. First of all, PDA’s are very portable. You can take them anywhere! They fit in your purse, briefcase, even your own pocket. They’re also very durable, so they’re built to last! PDA’s are also pretty inexpensive these days. You can get yourself a pretty decent and affordable personal digital assistant for about $150. Once you get one, you’ll realize just how amazing these devices really are! These awesome gadgets store your personal and professional information, at the touch of a button!
Wireless PDA’s are also programmable. You can run the most popular of applications on a palm pilot, allowing you to interact with your home or office computer. You can store documents, graphics, notes – the possibilities are endless, and transferring information from one medium to another is a breeze! What does it mean when you combine the power of a PDA with a mobile phone? Pure magic! There are many companies offering this innovative product. Check it out! PalmOne makes a PDA cell phone that makes it easier than ever for consumers to keep their business and personal life in order without all the excess bulk! Remember, these phones are compatible with either Macs or PCs, making it simple for you to download information when you need it the most. Key features on these types of phones include a mini “qwerty” keyboard for typing notes, Bluetooth technology, USB capability, and lithium powered batteries. Many of these PDA mobiles also include MP3 features! It’s all you’ll ever need to get through your day with ease!
Many people may even consider getting rid of their mobile phones and replacing it with these new PDA cell phones. If you think about it, you really don’t need much else! Tons of Americans walk around with briefcases or purses full of gadgets that only store a certain type of information. At one time, a cell phone was used primarily to make or receive calls. Now, times have changed. Long gone are the days when mobiles were bulky, heavy, and inadequate. As you may know, cell phones have marked their way into the world today, helping millions of people get what they need in their professional and personal lives. Not only do cell phones help us when we’re in a bind, they keep us well in tuned with the world. We can access the daily news, read our horoscopes, check movie listings, and so much more. Keep your address book updated with your contacts. Store email addresses, contact names, phone numbers – the sky is the limit! In fact, there’s nothing a cell phone can’t do these days! Without a doubt, cellular phones definitely enhance our lives. They can notify us when we have an important meeting or date coming up. You’ll never forget a friend or loved one’s birthday again! They come equipped with cool features, such as unique ring tones, games, and colour screens. Want to get online? No problem! You can picture message your friends, send text messages on the fly, even go online and download your email messages. These features come in handy, especially when travelling. In fact, many mobiles today are designed to be used anywhere around the world! So, there’s no need to worry about bringing a day planner or agenda to keep track of your to do list. A cell phone is all you need!
Now, you can enjoy the convenience and affordability of combining your heavily used and much needed cell phone with a practicality of a PDA or portable hand held system. Look around – you’ll soon see that many popular cellular phone carriers are carrying PDA cell phones, all equipped with different, but important features. In fact, customers can pick and choose which PDA phone best suits their needs. It’s all too simple! However, one thing is clear – owning a PDA mobile is an effective way to keep your business sorted. Imagine just how much information these powerful tools store! Cell phones are extremely practical but their downside is that they can only store so much information! For example, most mobile phones come with phone books that store between 100-500 contact entries. Certainly not enough when you’re building a list of personal and professional contacts. Having a PDA cell phone is like carrying around a mini computer in your pocket and the possibilities are surely endless! While it can’t fix your family meals every night or make the kids go to bed, it will keep you and your family extremely organized and in tune with what’s going on day to day!
While a PDA cellular phone is used primarily for professional use, take advantage of the many fun features it has to offer. If you ever wanted to own an MP3 player, there’s no need to buy one on its own! Some PDA mobiles come with a Windows Media Player device to keep you occupied with your favourite tunes during the day! If you’re travelling and are looking to maximize your time, surf the Internet. Even better, catch up on your emails! It’s like taking your office on the road, wherever you go, whenever you go!
If you’re worried about using your PDA too much – don’t! Many PDA cell phones will give you somewhere along the lines of 250 minutes of talk time and 240 hours of standby time. Keeping spare chargers and a base charger is always convenient to ensure that you’ll never go without your phone when you need it the most! You’ll enjoy typical features, such as a speakerphone, vibrating ringers, text capability, and Internet options. Connect using Outlook, and you’ll never have to search for a phone number or email address again! Store it once and forget about it!
For those individuals who are constantly travelling and on the road or in the sky, a PDA mobile phone makes sense. It’s the perfect gift and travel companion! Sometimes, it can be difficult to take a break from your day to find an Internet café or office that will allow you to connect and check your email and important messages. Now, imagine being able to access your information from anywhere in the world! You could be having dinner, in a car, or in between meetings, and you’ll never miss those important messages ever again! It’s important to note, your PDA cell phone contains the Internet, which will allow you to surf the web. So, now you can book your hotel reservations, find a phone number for a taxi, look for a restaurant in your area – it’s all possible without having to exhaust other options! Sync your phone with your laptop, and access your work, no matter where you are. Access flight information with the touch of a button! Get movie listings and find out where some of the best attractions are when you’re visiting a new town. It’s obvious that owning a PDA cell phone has its advantages. Remember, PDA phones are extremely lightweight and portable. So much power for such a tiny device – and to think, many phones will give you the option to add more memory if you need it, for additional storage!
It’s also good to know that many companies will also throw in extra cellular accessories, such as a headset, leather case, belt clip or hand strap. These always come in handy to protect and maintain the look of your equipment. They’re also very suitable when on the road. Having a headset allows you to use your phone while on the road keeping you safe as you drive with both hands on the wheel! If you’re going to use your phone on the road while driving, at least be safe! Be conscious of yourself and the other drivers around you! It doesn’t stop there! You can upgrade to a Bluetooth headset, or consider buying an extra adapter, charger, or magnet mount antenna set. You could also consider getting a starter kit that comes with the essentials to make the most out of your PDA cellular phone.
One thing is for sure. The rave about PDA cell phones is sweeping the nation. Stop and think for a moment. Many people carry around more than one of the following - a cell phone, an agenda or journal, a PDA system, a camera, an MP3 player. Well, all you need is the PDA mobile! It will replace all of these rather expensive items and provide for its consumers the convenience of owning the best all-in-one device to ever hit the market!

The Mystery Behind Saturn’s Moon Enceladus

October 9th, 2007

The Cassini-Huygens exploration of Saturn, a seven-year joint venture of NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Italian Space Agency, is getting a closer look at its current subject of attention, the small moon of Enceladus. Enceladus is one of the most innermost moons of Saturn which scientists had assumed to be largely dead. With a very bright surface it reflects nearly 100 per cent of its heat and thereby has a very cold temperature, minus 330 degrees Fahrenheit.

A surprising discovery was that Enceladus, unlike nearby similar moon Mimas, is geologically active due to the emission of ice particles propelled by water vapor into the atmosphere from its south pole. Enceladus is a small moon of approximately 300 miles radius and the existence of any geological activity for a moon that size has scientists pleasantly baffled. Discovery of geological activity on any moon has been a rare phenomenon so far. The wonderful unexplained mystery behind Enceladus is the cause of the tremendous heat source that is warming the ice. Scientists can only guess that it is due to tidal activity or radioactive mechanisms for now.

At one time it was believed that the heat was being emitted from the mid-latitude tectonic gashes that circumscribe the south polar region. This was what Cassini’s approach in July seemed to imply. However in contrast to that orbit of 286 miles, Cassini’s more recent closer approach of 109 miles confirmed that the heat was actually being emitted from what are known as the tiger stripes of Cassini. The tiger stripes of Cassini are 80 mile long fissures running parallel to each other spaced about 25 miles apart. Cassini is only 314 miles across. The hottest spots were found in the south polar region of the tiger stripes.

Cassini determined there were two types of ice on Enceladus. An older amorphous variety was due to the constant characteristic of the surface of the planet. However the ice particles vented through the tiger stripe fissure were fine crystalline particles. This ice averaged ten microns in size. It is these tiny ice particles escaping the moon’s atmosphere that are making up the composition of Saturn’s broadest ring, the E ring.

In March of 2008, Cassini is scheduled to visit Enceladus again. Perhaps then more light will be shed on the mystery behind Enceladus.

HDTV is What Technology is All About

October 8th, 2007

If you have not yet watched TV on an HDTV you do not know what you are missing. When they promote high definition they aren’t kidding. When my daughter was born I knew I’d be spending a lot of time at home so I invested in an HDTV and two years later I still think it was an excellent purchase. Not only is the picture unbelievable but the sound is much improved as well.

More and more channels are starting to come out in HDVT format so buying an HDTV makes much more sense now as compared to two years ago when I bought mine. When I first got it I think there were only four channels I could watch in HD. They happened to be four channels I watched a lot so it worked out well for me. As time has passed the TV’s themselves become even cheaper and more channels are available so they are a much better purchase.

Many people are not aware that by the end of this year, from what I have read, all TV signals will be sent via HDTV format. In order to watch TV you will either need a HDTV or you will have to have a converter to attach to your existing TV. The converter will not make your current TV an HDTV all of a sudden, it will just allow you to continue to get the same picture you have always gotten. Those converters are going to go for roughly $250 or so, based on my past research.

Now you are considering buying a HDTV, I have convinced you, right? How do you decide which kind to buy? There are regular tube TV’s that are HDTV ready. There are LCD and plasma TV’s. Budget will be a major factor in determining which one to buy. The tradition tube style TV’s are cheaper and they will also fit some existing entertainment centers. The flat screen TV’s will need to be mounted on the wall or most likely require a different kind of base than the entertainment center you currently have.

I did a lot of research before buying my TV. I ended up buying a 42” Sony LCD projection TV. It is a beautiful picture. I am very pleased with the purchase. But, none of these TV’s is without flaws. This particular model has a bulb that helps to project the image to the screen. It has a shelf life of about 18 months. I have had it replaced recently. The bulbs are a couple hundred dollars. Thankfully I purchased the maintenance plan when I bought the unit. Other than that I couldn’t be more satisfied. I can turn out all the lights in the room and throw in a DVD and it is better than going to the movies. I do have mine hooked up to a home theater system. Without that the sound would not be good enough to compare to a movie theater.

Some of the issues with the other kinds of TV’s are: the tube style TV’s are not as compact as the flat screens obviously. They do not get as big as the flat screens. I think the biggest I have seen is 36 inches. Because they are so much cheaper than the other two styles that is all I could think of as problems for the tube style TV. Plasma TV’s on the other hand are the worst buy of them all, in my opinion. My research discovered that plasma TV’s eventually burn out. Whatever is used inside the screen to project the image burns out and cannot be repaired. So, your picture will progressively get worse and you can’t do anything about it except wait for it to get so bad you need to buy another TV. This is a major problem given the price of these types of TV’s. They are the most expensive of the three types. There is no doubt they look nice when you first buy them. They look great in the room you put them in. They are very appealing to most people.

No matter what kind of TV you end up buying the bottom line is that you are going to be amazed the first time you watch your favorite show or sporting event in HD. It is actually funny to me when I look back and think of what TV’s I used to watch when I was little. We had those knobs that you could hear being turned down the street. No remotes, no cable or satellite, and we had to constantly fiddle with the rabbit ears to get a decent picture. I watch a program in HD and I sometimes wonder to myself how they are going to make watching TV in the future even better. It doesn’t seem possible but you know it is. History has shown things only continue to get better.

Midwest Patterns Goes Live Month Early with Encompix ERP Software

October 7th, 2007

Midwest Patterns, Inc., Quincy, Illinois, completed their
implementation of Encompix at the beginning of December 2005.
“The Encompix consultants were a joy to work with,” said Rob
Stull, project manager. “They really know their stuff and were
able to help us apply the Encompix software effectively to our
business. They all worked very hard to ensure that the ‘go-live’
went smoothly and helped us keep the project on track and on
budget.”

Midwest Patterns completed the implementation a full month
earlier than they originally planned. Encompix
(www.encompix.com) has filled the manufacturing software
requirements of Engineer-to-Order companies since 1992. The
company name reflects the commitment to developing business
application solutions that encompass the complex areas of
project-based and job-based manufacturing. Encompix provides ETO
manufacturers with a competitive advantage by improving bottom
line results.

According to Thomas R. Cutler, spokesperson for the ETO
Institute (www.etoinstitute.org), “Encompix continues to capture
significant marketshare in the ETO environment because few other
ERP vendors truly understand the nuances and significant
distinctions of the ETO process versus the repetitive
manufacturing process. Encompix now has more than 200 of the
leading ETO manufacturing firms in North America using their ERP
Software solution.”

LiveCamNetwork Finds Live High Definition Video Success

October 2nd, 2007

(Cyberspace) December 12, 2005 - Live adult video chat site LiveCamNetwork.com has found
that its new widescreen, high definition chat rooms are the
bestselling destinations on the site.

“This came as something of a surprise,” said site founder Mark
Prince. “We introduced the format slowly, wanting people who had
the equipment to migrate to it first. But it turns out most
people who could view our regular, 20 frame per second video are
able to see the high definition.”

Created by 2Much Internet Services Inc., the High Definition
format is not the same as pre-recorded HD. “This is high
definition for live, online interactive video. It’s still the
most advanced live video on the web,” said Prince.

LiveCamNetwork served as the testing ground for 2Much.net’s new format less than 2 months ago,
with special events such as The Luna Show (a live chat
hostess interview segment) and the Nude Light
Sabre Duel (a sci-fi trivia drinking game and Star Wars geek
gathering that featured a nude reenactement of the climactic
sword fight) popping up now and then as beta tests of the
software.

“It’s not quite revolutionary,” said Prince. “Essentially we
combined the Windows Media Player with the right codec, beefed
up our servers and delivery back-end, and there you go. We’re
just the first who combined the elements.”

Regardless, the rest of the software is original and is
currently undergoing a radical upgrade to ease site management
and niche the marketing potential of clients who have models
that vary from male to female, thin to BBW and so on.

Prince also adds that performers who have since taken up regular
spots in the live hi-def chat rooms have seen revenues increase
significantly.

“People are jaded now by the state of the art in live video,”
said Prince. “We have to give them something new. Choppy silent
video doesn’t cut it anymore, everyone expects the standard
screen format and smooth video. So we’re here to blow their
minds all over again.”

After having been the first DSL/Broadband live adult chat site
on the web, Prince insists they will be the first
high-definition video chat site.

“We’re running 30 frames per second,” he said. “And the aspect
ratio is 16:9, not the squarer 4:3 .”

The stream is also carrying audio quality in the form of 48 Khz
Dolby Surround 5.1 stereo, which permits models and studio
managers to plug in their music and higher-end microphones to
bring out the warmth and “closeness” of the chat hostess.

The site has been rushing to create hi-def chat accounts for the
most popular of its chat hostesses, reserving one studio for the
format alone.

“It’s not enough,” said Prince. “Pretty soon everyone’s going to
want to be in high definition.”

Fear , a World Disease

September 28th, 2007

Fear , a World Disease

Fear has spread around the world at the speed of a hurricane. Who is spreading this disease of fear? Humanity is. Why? It is because humanity has basic fears instilled into them when they are children, and now these fears have grown out of all proportion.

Let’s look at what we fear. Parents tell their children not to speak to strangers in case they are abducted. So children learn from an early age that the world is not a safe place! ‘Do not stray from home, or someone will take you away’.

We fear illness, cancer and aids. We are told ‘Don’t eat this and don’t eat that. Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, if you don’t you increase your risk of disease and cancer!’ This fear about our diets is promoted weekly in the news.

We are sold insurance policies, medical insurance, home insurance, accident insurance, life insurance, all ‘just in case something happens.’ This reinforces our fears and securities, so we try harder to guard against them. Again, the idea that the world is not a safe place is being reinforced. Fear of lack, fear of not being abundant, fear of not having enough are all promoted and played upon. So we work harder, forfeit family life and mothers go out to work leaving their children to be brought up by strangers. All of this because we fear we do not have enough.

Fear of what other people think about us, is very high on our list of insecurities. We judge other people and other people judge us! We even live our lives doing what other people want us to do rather than being true to ourselves, because we are afraid of being judged by them.

Throughout our history, governments, monarchs and religion have all controlled the people by instilling fear. Why? Fearful people can be swayed, persuaded to do what commonsense tells them not to. Fear has been programmed into our psyches. For lifetime after lifetime we have been steeped in fear. The stress and anxiety of all these fears compromises our health physically and mentally.

The sad fact is that the more we fear, the more we draw our fears to us. We are very powerful beings; we manifest our beliefs, thus creating our reality. The more we fear, the more we draw it into our lives and disaster strikes. Stop for a moment and think about what you really fear. Are they actually your fears or are they someone else’s? Are they government based or media based? Are they the Truth? What do you really think? Sharpen your awareness so that can stand back and take a look at what is going on around you. Look at your life and how you live it. Do you need to be in so much fear?

On an individual level, we can stop this dis-ease. We can clear it, let go of it and not ‘buy into it’.
