What Are Nutraceuticals and Why Are the Drug Companies Upset?

August 19th, 2007

If you break the word apart, Nutra has to do with nutrition, and Ceuticals has to do with drug companies – pharmaceuticals. So what is the big deal? Nutraceuticals are god-given nutrients that are readily available for our good health, but drug companies want to make them illegal to buy and use – unless they can sell them to increase their bank accounts.

Another word you need to know is CODEX (the European Food Supplements Directive). The purpose of Codex is similar to Nutraceuticals. The government wants to control supplements so that we are made totally dependent on doctors, drug companies and the government.

Your first response is “What the heck does Europe have to do with me? I live in the US.” Well, this is one of the first steps in controlling healthy things – supplements, vitamins, minerals, and healthy foods. If it is successful in Europe, they (multinational governments) will bring CODEX to the US.

So, what will CODEX do to us?

  • It makes people think that nutritional supplements are unsafe while it diverts attention away from the toxic side effects of prescription drugs and over-the-counter drugs.
  • It will create higher prices for healthy supplements to force people to rely on expensive drugs covered by insurance companies.
  • With a decrease of stores selling supplements, the better it is for medicine (drug companies and doctors). With less sources for healthy alternatives, there is less competition with prescription drugs.
  • It starts legal control of not only healthy supplements but also control of nutritious foods that help prevent disease – grass-fed chemical-free beef, chemical-free chicken, and non-chemical healthful plants like broccoli.
  • There will be arrests of advocates of natural health – supplement makers, and retailers. These people will no longer have a voice.
  • It will stop the production of new supplements by making manufacturers go through hoops and/or millions of dollars for
    approvals of God-given nutrients.
  • It will set a precedence for making nutrients illegal. And then each year a few nutrients will be taken off the market. It
    has happened to L–tryptophan and ephedera. There was a problem with L–tryptophan. There were two versions – one naturally
    made here in the US and a genetically engineered version from Japan. The Japanese version caused a serious blood disease
    where a few died and many got very sick. The chemical boys (also known as drug companies) saw a way to get rid of
    competition. They also did not want the public to know that anything was wrong with genetic engineering of foods and
    drugs. With this in mind, they got the FDA to ban all L–tryptophan. For the most part, no one knows if ephedera has done any harm or if it’s so called bad effects was because of some combination that was not investigated - on purpose. Remember well, Viagra killed more people in the first year it was on the market than all the supplements in the last one hundred years.
  • Outlawing nutrients that prevent disease will continue to create people who are diseased and with poor nutrition. Without
    supplements, they will have to turn to expensive toxic drugs – they will not get well, but it will be perceived that something is being done.

Remember: Unhealthy Soil = Unhealthy Plants and Animals = Unhealthy People

Also: If the Maker didn’t make it, we shouldn’t eat it – prepared foods, toxic drugs (make no mistake we need some drugs but not the indiscriminate use of antibiotics, drugs for cholesterol and pain pills).

We need more doctors who know how to find the cause of disease and help us eliminate the causes instead of covering up the symptoms with drugs – like pain pills for arthritis.

Now you know what Nutraceuticals and CODEX represent. Someday you will need to contact your congressman, congresswoman or your senator to stop the chemical boys from killing us. The only thing we have is our voices. The chemicals boys have more money to pay for political campaigns than we can imagine. Remember, Democrat or Republican is not the issue because both sides have been bought and paid for with the millions of dollars of profits made from selling us expensive drugs that don’t work or make us more ill.

Creating Your Target of Health

August 12th, 2007

Creating Your Target is easy.

What I use to help create these targets is what I call SMARTS targets
SMARTS stands for:

Simple, Sensory, and Specific
Measurable and Meaningful
As If Now
Realistic
Time Framed
Smiley Factor

Some more about what these all mean:

“S”: Simple is exactly that. Simple. Do not make it too complicated, or long and drawn out. Most people should be able to understand what it is. If it is a goal around some specific field, most of your colleagues should be able to understand your target.

“S”: Sensory involves all of your senses. You use your sense of vision. You hear things in this picture and movie. You smell things in your movie of your target. You feel things, both with your hands and with your emotions. In your picture, you have the internal voice in your head that you always have. You put all of these different senses into your picture, as well as the most important one, the inner knowing of your heart brain. Make sure to get that in the picture or movie as well.

“S”: Specific. This is best illustrated with an example. I have moved many times in my life. Every time I moved, I created a list of what I want. And every time there was a fireplace on that list. The first time, I was looking at a place that had everything I wanted but a fireplace. I mentioned this to the landlord and she laughed. She took me into the unfinished basement, and there was a plastic fireplace in the basement. I learned from this, and when I was looking for the next place I put a real fireplace on my list. I found a place that had everything except a fireplace. I said this to the landlord and he said that there was a fireplace. It was just boarded up behind the wall. The next place I moved into, I put a real working fireplace on the list of what I wanted. I found a place with a real working fireplace this time, but the landlord would not let me use it. So finally I put on my list “a real working fireplace I can use.” And the next time, I got it. You need to be specific.

“M”: Measurable. There must be some specific way in which you measure the results, a quantifiable way that you know the goal is achieved.

“M”: Meaningful. The target, the goal must be meaningful to you. It must be something you want and desire. If it means nothing to you, there will be no reason to keep going for it. It does not work to have it be something that someone else wants for you.

“A”: As If Now. Write your movie in the present tense, as if you are describing a situation that is happening now. Tomorrow never comes. It is like the sign “Free money tomorrow.” You come back the next day and the sign still says, “Free money tomorrow.” Tomorrow never comes. If you write your goals in the future, the future never comes.

“R”: Realistic. Your target must be believable to you. If you do not think you can attain it, chances are you probably will not attain it. Now, this means two things. One, if you have a faulty belief system about what you can and cannot do and you want to change it, you might want to try my CDs. Two, “realistic” is different for everyone. For some, making a million dollars in one year is totally attainable. For others, it is not. Make sure your target is realistic to you.

“T”: Time Framed. Put a definite date on your target. Put the date as if today is the date, and write your goal with that date now. This is similar to As If Now, but with an actual date or time frame.

“S”: Smiley Factor. Make sure that you are smiling and happy in the picture, that your goal includes your being happy. Here is an example of why: You have a goal to be in Italy within five years, but no smiley factor. You get some rare cancer that the only know treatment for is in Italy, and you have to fly there to get your cancer treated. This is not what you want.

Make sure you do not have negatives in your goals. It is not good to say something like “no more pain,” because remember, what you focus on is what you get. So if you are focusing on “no pain”, “pain” is actually what you are focusing on. If you don’t want this or that, you have to put it in your target as a positive. Like if the pain were gone, what would be there? You might be feeling great, or have free movement in your neck or whatever. Just make sure you put all the things you don’t want in terms of what you would have when they were gone, so you can focus on what you want, because that is what you will get.

Drink 10 Tea Cups Per Day to Keep Doctor Away

August 5th, 2007

Many previous laboratory researches have demonstrated the inhibitory power of components of black and green teas not only against cancer but also against tumerogenesis in lung, colon and skin.

Green tea is made from the a plant named Camellia Sinensis…as is black tea. The only difference is that green tea is left unfermented, which means that the high antioxidant actions remain fully intact.

Regarding tea daily consumption there are serious concerns related to its caffeine. So, drinking how much is too much?

Experts say total fluid intake in adults might be about 2.5 liters, of which tea can contribute six to ten cups, that means 0.7 to 1.4 liters.

The question has for long baffled tea lovers but experts say six to 10 cups per day can help in lowering the risk of a number of chronic diseases, claims a book.

Six to ten cups per day may be a beneficial dietary habit to help in reducing the risk of a number of chronic diseases. Green and/or black tea daily consumption could be a part of a health promoting nutritional diet low in total fat and salt. Besides regular cups of tea, this healthy diet must contain adequate vegetables and fruits, bran cereal insoluble fibers as well as sources of soluble fibers.

The History of Ambrotose(r) Complex

August 4th, 2007

Ambrotose® - the Nutritional Alphabet of the “Sweet Language of Life”

The story begins with Aloe Vera. The discovery of Ambrotose® really dates back to the 1980’s. Dr. Bill McAnalley, research pharmacologist, was determined to identify the active component in Aloe Vera. After many years, and extensive documentation, he did, indeed, discover the element in Aloe Vera associated with the health-promoting properties historically ascribed to its use. The active ingredient was a carbohydrate with many mannose sugar molecules linked together. He found that Aloe products are not effective unless the active carbohydrate molecule has been stabilized through a special, patented process he discovered. Today, both pharmaceutical and dietary supplement versions of this standardized Aloe substance are available, and they are protected by over 100 patents in numerous countries. The dietary supplement form was named Manapol®.

Positive Feedback

The positive feedback from the extensive use of Manapol® was over-whelming. Dr. McAnalley’s research had demonstrated the immune-supportive properties of Manapol®. However, the positive feedback made it clear that many of the results were not limited to immune support. For instance, there were numerous reports of improved cognitive (mental) function.** This puzzled Dr. McAnalley.

The Carbohydrate Connection

By now, Dr. McAnalley was one of the most knowledgeable scientists in the world in the mysterious, little-known field of carbohydrate research. Further research led him to take a closer look at the “carbohydrate connection.” The Journal, Biotechnology (February,1990), states that “Almost without exception, whenever two or more living cells interact in a specific way, cell surface carbohydrates will be involved.” In other words, all living cells have I.D. Codes on their surfaces, and these I.D. codes tell every other cell “who” they are, what they do, and whether or not they are healthy. The alphabet for that communication is made up of carbohydrates. This I.D. Code system is so basic to human life that it is the means by which a sperm recognizes an egg for the purpose of fertilization.

These carbohydrates are not the average dietary ones available at the grocery store. The 1996 edition of Harper’s Biochemistry (chapter on Glycoproteins by Dr. Robert K Murray) identifies eight, little-known, essential carbohydrates necessary for the creation of cellular “words.”

Dr. McAnalley, working with Dr. H. Reginald McDaniel, saw that “mannose,” the carbohydrate in Manapol,® was listed as one of those eight essential carbohydrates. He hypothesized that the presence of the mannose in the Manapol® could be leading to enhanced cell-to-cell communication. He realized that this could explain the positive results that were not directly linked to immune function. He realized that the proper cellular “words” were essential for the effective manifestation of the genetic code (your body’s blueprint) and could, thereby, have a crucial role in every aspect of the maintenance of optimal health.

Since the feedback from people after adding mannose (via Manapol®) to the diet had been so positive, Dr. McAnalley and Dr. McDaniel decided to put together a dietary blend of all the essential carbohydrates associated with cell-to-cell communication (including Manapol®). These nutrients are called glyconutritionals (carbohydrate nutrients). Ambrotose® is a glyconutritional complex. The discovery of linking the biochemical knowledge to the field of nutritional science was considered “new science,” making it possible to apply for patents. Dr. McAnalley named the substance after the Greek word for “ambrosia,” i.e. “ambrotos.” He added the “e” at the end of the word because, in chemistry, a substance that is a carbohydrate ends in “ose.” So, metaphorically, Ambrotose® is the carbohydrate that is the food for eternal life ! I would delete the word eternal.

**Since the creation of Ambrotose®, many researchers have confirmed these initial observations and published their results in peer-reviewed publications.

Ambrotose® - an “essential” carbohydrate formula - the nutritional “alphabet” of the “sweet language of life.”

Many experts in nutrition feel that Dr. McAnalley’s and Dr. McDaniel’s discovery of Ambrotose® has revealed an unsuspected “nutritional deficiency. “Throughout the 20th century, many conditions thought to be infectious were later discovered to be nutritional deficiencies. These deficiencies have been caused by a wide range of changes in the way that food is currently grown and processed. Deficiencies in essential vitamins, minerals, amino acids (proteins), and fats are now well recognized. However, it was not suspected that there might be deficiencies in “essential” carbohydrates. Although a “nutritional deficiency” has not been officially determined, it is suspected that the processing of food has removed many of the carbohydrates now considered essential for cellular communication. For example, natural maple syrup contains many of these carbohydrates while the typical maple-flavored syrups do not. Further validation of the “essential” nature of these carbohydrates can be found in an article about the benefits of breastfeeding (Science & Medicine, 1997). Five of the eight carbohydrates considered essential for cell-to-cell communication have been found to be crucial ingredients in human breast milk.

Since we can no longer count on these essential carbohydrates being in our diets, supplementation is the only way to be certain that we get enough of these key nutrients.

Scientists are taking a look at this discovery

Cell-to-cell communication is essential for proper immune function. Numerous scientists and doctors are validating the benefits of adding Ambrotose® to the diet through a variety of case studies. Even Dr. Robert K. Murray, the author of the chapter in Harper’s Biochemistry mentioned above, has become fascinated with the nutritional application of his discovery.

Explosion in research into the connection between carbohydrates and health

A worldwide explosion of research into glycoproteins and carbohydrate therapeutics is accelerating. In fact there are approximately 54 articles being published every day in this field.

A special edition of Acta Anatomica on “Glycosciences” was just published by Karger. The text and tables of contents of this special edition are available online

(www.karger.com/journals/aan/aancont.htm). The summary on the back page states that “monosaccharides represent an alphabet of biological information similar to amino acids and nucleic acids, but with unsurpassed coding capacity.” The preface indicates that the “words” constructed from the carbohydrate alphabet mentioned above are the “sweet language of life.”

Finding the Right Hoodia Dosage

July 25th, 2007

Some people say that it takes 1500mg per day to control their appetites. Some say 3000mg is necessary. Some manufactures of hoodia supplements recommend two capsules three times a day, while more potent hoodia products recommend one capsule three times a day and some two capsules twice a day. People have experimented with their own hoodia dosage, basically using themselves as guinea pigs and this may be okay if the product is 100% hoodia gordonii. But, it is wise to follow the manufacturer’s recommended dosage on any hoodia herb combos. It is also, always recommended to consult your doctor before using any new supplement. While research done by Phytopharm has shown hoodia to have an acceptable safety level, they have not completed clinical research and they only use a purified potent hoodia gordonii extract known as p57. Whether or not the research completed by Phytopharm can be applied to products which are currently on the market is up for debate. Phytopharm’s product, which is expected to be the most potent hoodia product, is not scheduled to be released for several years.

The acceptable hoodia dosage concerns many health care professionals. While hoodia gordonii is not believed to be a stimulant, there have been problems associated with stimulants used as appetite suppressants and some hoodia herb combos do contain stimulants. It may not be obvious to the consumer, listed ingredients will not say; includes XXX (a stimulant). The best advice for consumers is to investigate a product’s ingredients thoroughly, not just what appears on the package label or the company website. Find an impartial source of information.

Even 100% hoodia gordonii products should be used with caution, the smallest hoodia dosage that allows results is recommended. It is also recommended that dieters obtain a clean bill of health from their doctor’s, before begin any weight loss program, with or without potent hoodia products. Caution is advised because so little is known about the plant. Manufacturers refer to use by the San people of southern Africa, but it was not one of their preferred food items. They did not eat it often.

Hoodia products are not intended for use by pregnant or nursing women or children under the age of 18. Anyone suffering from a medical condition of any kind or who is currently taking any prescription medication should not use any hoodia dosage (weak, low-dose or potent hoodia) without a doctor’s supervision. No one knows what potential there is for drug interaction or what affect hoodia could have on any medical condition. Clinical studies, by Phytopharm, used a controlled potent hoodia dosage administered to overweight volunteers who were otherwise healthy. These studies were closely supervised and are still on-going.

Glyconutrients - Research And Discovery

July 6th, 2007

Glyconutrients were virtually unknown as little as 10 years ago. The whole group of carbohydrates and saccharides was largely neglected. With the advent of Glycobiology scientists have since come to learn an increasing amount about these vital nutrients.

Dr McAnalley did some of the first research with Glyconutrients in 1995. He developed and filed patents for Glyconutrient formulas in 1996. Scientists began to realize the importance of polysaccharides and Glyconutrients in the body and how taking supplements with these nutrients can be very beneficial to your health.

He and his research staff started their work when they isolated and researched acemannan from the Aloe Vera, plant. Aloe polymannose (acemannan) is a polysaccharide that is nontoxic. Many of the health benefits from this ancient healing plant can be credited to this natural polysaccharide. Since that time Dr McAnalley has invented over 66 patented products. He is a renowned speaker and held many prominent positions.

Because of his pioneer work on Polysaccharides and Glyconutrients a whole new research is being conducted into these nutrients. This is called Glycobiology (the study of Glyconutrients) Scientists are discovering more and more about the uses of these substances and their important functions in the body.

Having neglected the study of carbohydrates for so long scientists are just now taking steps to understand the complex make up of this class of foods. As they dig deeper they are uncovering the mysteries of the body functions and how the cells actually communicate with each other. They are also discovering the body’s natural healing mechanisms and how this can be improved with these vital nutrients.

Scientists are also studying the pharmacokinetics of these substances. This is the study of how these Glyconutrients, polysaccharides, disaccharides and monosaccharide absorb, excrete, effect metabolism and react with the body.

With this Glycobiology research scientists can uncover all the different uses these nutrient have and unlock the different chemical compounds found within the complex carbohydrate family of foods. As they unlock the compounds and chains of saccharides they will get more insight into these substances and see how they can improve our health.

Dr McAnalley’s long years of work have paved the way for other scientists and research students to continue in their quest for more information about the carbohydrate family of foods (polysaccharides, and Glyconutrients). As they continue to learn more we shall see more information on how we can improve our health with these vital nutrients.

Many nutritional supplements are being developed for these Glyconutrients. One of the most well known is Ambrotose. This supplement was developed by Mannatech and provides all the components required for your body to manufacture Glyconutrients. This is useful to you, as the foods we eat today do not have enough of this vital nutrient for our bodies to maintain a good state of health. When you take these supplements you can help your body heal and maintain its health and improve your lifestyle by being the healthy person you should be.

Celiac Disease and the Grains That Cause this llness

June 26th, 2007

Eating grain products - breads, cakes, cereals - have long been consider a healthy choice. If you look at the RDA recommendations, grains, at the bottom of the pyramid, are what you should be eating the most of to maintain a healthy body.

The RDA’s recommendations do not consider any food to be harmful for you. You must remember that the RDA’s recommendations come from a government agency and indicating a particular food could be harmful to your health could financially affect that industry. The government does not want to destroy any industry even if it is harmful to your health. Just look at the smoking industry. It’s still alive.

In medical and alternative medicine circles, celiac disease is well known for being the cause of numerous detrimental body conditions. In its basic form, celiac disease is the damage of the intestinal lining by gluten proteins, which come from grains - the bottom of the pyramid.
Let’s get technical for a moment and say that the specific proteins in gluten that damage the intestine are called “gliadin.”

What you need to know about gliadin is that when you eat it, it acts like an invading substance, which activates your body’s immune system to destroy and eliminate the invader – your favorite food bread and cereals.
Eating an excess of gluten causes celiac disease. Where is gluten found? It is found in products made from wheat, rye, barley, kamut, triticale, oats, and spelt.

It is now well established in medicine that 1 in approximately 100 have celiac disease. Many have the disease without having any symptoms. The continual use of and eating of detrimental grains will eventually bring on symptoms. People with celiac disease can expect to have illnesses associated or connected with:

* cancer

* epilepsy

* attention deficit disorders

* auto immune diseases

* osteoporosis

* brain disorders

* neurological diseases

* premature death

* premature births

* chronic liver diseases

* gastrointestinal problems

* food allergies

* chronic fatigue

* malnutrition

* and the list goes on and on

When the intestinal lining is damage by gluten, your overall health is damaged. Your immune system is activated to prevent further intestinal damage causing your overall response to other body crisis to diminish. Your ability to fight off other diseases is diminished. Your ability to absorb nutrients from your food is reduced leading to nutritional deficiencies.

How does gluten create so many problems in the body? As gluten moves into the intestine, it is digested and broken down into small protein molecules - peptides (which consist of 2-3 amino acids bound together) and free amino acids. Amino acids are the basic building blocks the make up protein. Once digestion is complete, peptides and free amino acids easily move into the intestinal wall cell structure and then into your blood stream. This is what happens in a healthy person.

Over many years of eating gluten, the intestinal cell structure deteriorates. Digested protein no longer passes through the cells walls but passes between cells and into the blood. These holes in the intestinal walls is what is know as “leaky gut syndrome”

Because of the existence of these tiny holes in the intestinal wall, harmful substances can pass into the blood and settle into your organs and cells causing irritations and damage. Your intestinal wall is no longer a barrier keeping out unwanted substances from your blood and body.

Undigested foods can now enter your body creating food allergies. Toxins from various foods - dyes, preservatives, food additives, artificial flavors - can now enter you blood stream. Pathogens such as bacteria, worms, fungus and viruses can also enter your body and invade your organs. When this happens, you will slowly come down with a variety of symptoms and illnesses that you cannot attribute to anything specific.
Absorption of undigested proteins is a major threat to the health of your organs and to your immune system.

It is estimated that up to 40% of all people have some intestinal damage from eating gluten and are passing undigested proteins into their blood stream.

There are some of you that do not have the enzymes to digest gluten. Those of you have what is called “gluten sensitivity.” Those of you that have the enzymes to digest gluten are not as prone to celiac disease and have less damage to your intestinal wall.

So what are the foods that you should be eliminating from your eating habits?

* wheat starch, wheat grass, wheat germ oil, wheat triticum

* bread flour, brewer’s yeast, bran, brown flour

* oats, oat straw,

* baking powder, edible starch, germ, gum base, dextrin

* malt, rice malt,

* rye, spelt, kamut, wheat, bleached flour, couscous, pearl barley, bulgar

*soy sauce, teriyaki sauce, shoyu, miso

* durum wheat triticum, semolina, emolina triticum

* beer

* blue cheese

One natural remedy for Celiac is Cardamon, which is found in India. It has been used successful in treating Celiac disease in children.

For women, celiac has been found to be associated with osteoporosis, since the intestinal walls are compromised and absorb Calcium poorly. To over come this make sure you take magnesium and Vitamim B12 to increase your absorbtion of Calcium. Or better yet find some form of ionic calcium and magnesium and use them as a supplement.

Not all is known about the effects of gluten on your body and how it creates illness. What is known is that gluten is responsible for celiac disease and many other diseases that result from having celiac.

Don’t always believe what the government says about food. Their interest is in economics and not in your health.

Sources of Fibre

June 21st, 2007

The most significant food sources of fibre are unprocessed wheat bran, whole cereals such as wheat, rice, barley, rye, millets; legumes such as potato, carrots, beet, turnip, and sweet potato; fruits like mango and guava; and leafy vegetables such as cabbage, lettuce, and celery.

The
percentage of fibre content per 100 gms. of some foods are:

bran 10.5-13.5
whole grain cereals 1.0-2.0
nuts 2.0-5.0
legumes 1.5-1.7
vegetables 0.5-1.5
fresh fruits 0.5-1.5
dried fruits 1.0-3.0.

The foods which are completely devoid of fibre are meat, fish , eggs, milk, cheese,
fats and sugars.

Bran, the outer coverings of grains, is one of the richest sources of dietary fibre. And it contains
several types of fibre including cellulose, hermicellulose and pectin. Wheat and corn bran are
highly beneficial in relieving constipation. Experiments show that oat bran can reduce cholesterol
levels substantially. Corn bran is considered more versatile. It relieves constipation and also
lowers LDL cholesterol, which is one of the more harmful kinds. Besides being rich in fibre, bran
has a real food value being rich in time, iron and vitamins and containing a considerable amount
of protein.

Dr. Dennis P. Burkitt, a noted British physician remarks, “Grain roughages, such as rich bran
and wheat bran, are an essential part of a healthy diet, and a preventive against diseases like
piles, constipation, bowel cancer, varicose veins and even coronary thrombosis.” Dr. Burkitt
worked for many years in Africa and found after a series of observations that rural Africans who
eat bulk of fibrous foods rarely suffer from any of these diseases.
Legumes have high fibre content. Much of this fibre is water-soluble, which makes legumes
likely agents for lowering cholesterol. Soyabeans, besides this, can also help control glucose
levels.

The types of fibre contained in vegetables and fruits contribute greatly towards good health. The
vegetables with the biggest fibre ratings include sweet corn, carrots, potatoes, parsnips and
peas. And among the high ranking fruits are raspberries, pears, strawberries, and guavas.

Why Go Organic?

June 10th, 2007

So what is all this hype about a completely organic lifestyle? Does it REALLY make that much of a difference? YES!!!

For anyone truly concerned about their health and the health of their loved ones, adopting an organic lifestyle is a huge step in the direction of excellent health and wellness. An organic lifestyle means eating organic foods, using organic cleaning methods and toiletries, and wearing organic clothing. You can adopt all of these practices or just a few but any advancement in this area is improvement.

Most people agree that they would like to buy organic food and adopt a more organic lifestyle. Yet, instead of prioritizing certified organic food, the majority of people stick with their habitual processed or conventional foods. These non organic foods are nutrition poor, contain toxic residues, taste inferior and are potentially harmful to the environment, you and your family. So why go organic – you can’t afford not to!

Here are just a few of the reasons why you should go organic:

Your produce will not adorn the chemical cocktail that conventionally grown produce does.

Fresh organic produce contains on average 50% more vitamins, minerals, enzymes and other micro-nutrients than intensively farmed produce.

Organic foods are not genetically modified (GM) and therefore better for you.

Eating Organic meat means avoiding eating animal meat from animals that are fed a dangerous cocktail of anti-biotics, growth promoting drugs, anti-parasite drugs and many other medicines on a daily basis, whether they have an illness or not.

Organic produce tastes so much better!

Wearing organic clothing means you are NOT wearing chemicals on your body.

Using organic cleaning materials is just as effective as using conventional cleaners but without harmful chemicals.

Once you made the commitment to go organic why not also make the commitment to buy locally? Most produce in the U.S. is picked 4 to 7 days before being placed on supermarket shelves, and is shipped for an average of 1500 miles before being sold. And this is when taking into account only US grown products! What a wasteful food system! This process weakens our communities, destroys our environment, and concentrates wealth and power into a few hands only.

We can counteract these harmful effects and help keep our local farmers in business by buying locally grown food whenever possible. You’ll be strengthening your community by investing your food dollar close to home. You’ll also get exceptional taste and freshness since local food is fresher and tastes better than food shipped long distances from other states or countries. 4 Steps To Brain Health

June 6th, 2007

New studies bring to our attention that high levels of cholesterol might make the brain cells more prone to dementia. The heart and brain are connected to long term health - many things that heart patients do are good for all of us to keep our brain healthy, too. So by preventing a heart attack, you can avoid brain drain.

1. Take B Vitamins.

B vitamins can help stifle homocysteine, an amino acid that damages blood vessels. A new study of seniors from researchers at the Chicago-based Rush Institute found in 2004 that seniors with low levels of niacin were more likely to suffer from Alzheimer’s. Get in the habit of taking a quality B Complex every day.

2. Try Ginkgo Biloba.

Extracted from the ancient ginkgo tree, ginkgo biloba is considered the best of all brain-boosting supplements on the market. Studies of people with Alzheimer’s disease show that ginkgo enhances blood flow to the brain and improves memory recall. In addition, ginkgo is a potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Ginkgo does thin the blood and can clash with some medications, especially blood thinners; so check with your doctor before taking and make sure not to take before a surgery.

3. Avoid inflammation.

Chronic inflammation, whether from an irritated bowel disease, inflamed gums, or an autoimmune disease, weakens the arteries in both the heart and the head. Inflammation makes the arteries more vulnerable to rupture and increases the danger of heart attack and stroke. Keep an eye on early warning signs of inflammation.

4. Exercise your brain.

Older folks who are readers stay sharp while those who watch TV melt into the couch. When researchers compared those struck by Alzheimer’s and their activity level, 47% are less likely to develop the disease than those who taxed their brains the least. Do crossword puzzles, read, play cards, write detailed and interesting e-mails to all your friends, surf the web, and just plain stay busy.

Supplements of the Month:

Ginkgo Biloba

The ginkgo is the oldest living tree species, geological records indicate this plant has been growing on earth for 150 - 200 million years. It was first brought to Europe in the 1700’s and it is now a commonly prescribed drug in France and Germany.

In the last 30 years, more that 300 studies have given clinical evidence that ginkgo prevents and benefits many problems throughout the entire body. Ginkgo is gaining recognition as a brain tonic that enhances memory because of its positive effects on the vascular system, especially in the cerebellum.

Ginkgo may help to counteract the effects of aging, including mental fatigue and lack of energy.

Ginkgo works by increasing blood flow to the brain and throughout the body’s network of blood vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the organ systems. It increases metabolism efficiency, regulates neurotransmitters, and boosts oxygen levels in the brain which uses 20% of the body’s oxygen.

Ginkgo has been used to relieve tension and anxiety and improve mental alertness, elevate mood and restore energy.

Ginkgo also acts as a powerful antioxidant and contributes to the oxidation of free radicals which are believed to contribute to premature aging and dementia. Antioxidants also protect the eyes, cardiovascular system and central nervous system.

Ginkgo may also help control the transformation of cholesterol to plaque associated with the hardening of arteries, and can relax constricted blood vessels.

Studies have confirmed that ginkgo increases blood flow to the retina, and can slow retinal deterioration resulting in an increase of visual acuity.

Flush-Free Niacin

Vitamin B 3 - (Niacin) is used in the process of releasing energy from carbohydrates, forming fat from carbohydrates and to metabolize alcohol. Vitamin B3 comes in two basic forms - niacin (also called nicotinic acid) and niacinamide (also called nicotinamide). Inositol hexaniacinate, a “flush-free” niacin, is also available and has many of the same benefits of niacin, and is becoming increasingly popular. Dietary niacin and niacin formed within the body from the amino acid tryptophan are converted to niacinamide. Niacinamide is the biologically active form of niacin.

The RDA for men and women is in the range 14-18mg, and is easily achieved. Prescribed doses of the supplement go as high as 3gm per day and sometimes even higher.

The best food sources of vitamin B3 are peanuts, brewer’s yeast, fish and meat, and fortified breakfast cereals. Some vitamin B3 is also found in whole grains. Vitamin B3 is found in most vitamin supplements, but additional supplementation is needed to achieve many of the proven health benefits.

Food sources (mg per 100gm):

Rice bran (18.5)
Tuna (11.6)
Chicken liver (9.3)
Chicken, white meat (8.1)
Wheat germ (5.6)
Brown rice (4.7)
Broccoli (0.8)
Dried figs (0.4)

Niacin is one of the most stable of the B-vitamins. It is resistant to the effects of heat, light, air, acid and alkali. A white crystalline substance that is soluble in water and alcohol, niacin and niacinamide are both readily absorbed from the small intestine. Small amounts may be stored in the liver, but most of the excess is excreted in the urine. The only appreciable loss of niacin occurs when it leaches into cooking water.

Caution:

Niacin, taken orally as nicotinic acid, can produce redness, warmth, and itching over areas of the skin; this “niacin flush” usually occurs when doses of 50mg or more are taken and is a result of the release of histamine by the cells, which causes vasodilatation.
‘Take Your Vitamins’ brand of Flush Free Niacin can be taken, as it will not produce this reaction.

As with any vitamin or supplement, please consult your doctor before taking.
