Learning To Play Piano Chords

March 8th, 2008

If you are playing several notes at the same time, then you are
playing piano chords. Simply put, when multiple notes are played
together, piano chords are achieved. The chords then come
together to form a melody. Every song that you hear has a melody
and it is through each melody that music is achieved. Sound
complicated? Well, that’s ok because it really isn’t as
difficult as it sounds.

As a musician, whether it be professional or hobbyist, you will
need to learn the various types of piano chords. The more that
you understand about piano chords, the more variety you will
have when playing. If you want to write your own music, you not
only need an ear for tunes, but also the understanding of how to
make them come together. A good instructor will introduce you to
piano chords during lessons.

If you already have some experience, but simply want a better
understanding of advanced piano chords, discuss these options
with a private tutor or music teacher. By gaining an
understanding of what sounds good and what doesn’t, you will
have the undeniable edge over other budding musicians.

Every piano has 88 keys and while it may seem intimidating to
learn piano chords, it actually comes down to memory. When
typing on the computer, you know which keys to press in order to
make a lowercase letters change to uppercase, right? By studying
piano chords, you will begin to understand which keys to press
at the same time in order to play a chord. During your
introduction to learning piano, an instructor will cover some of
the basic chords and you will come to know their sound when you
hear them. After enough practice, you will be able to
immediately identify piano chords by ear.

There are several other ways to help in your learning of piano
chords, including instructional books, tutorials and videos. In
the beginning, it may even help to label the keys until you have
a better understanding of each of their unique sounds. As you
progress in your learning, you can remove the identification
labels and play using any arrangement of sheet music. Learning
to identify notes will play a large part in your understanding
of piano chords. As you move through your studies, you will
learn all of the terminology associated with piano playing and
the definition of each.

Learning piano chords is a very important part of the process,
but it does require a certain degree of patience. Always
remember that time will lessen the difficulty and, before you
know it, you will be playing and identifying piano chords by
ear. While it may seem intimidating at first, you will soon
begin to notice the ease of playing piano chords will come
naturally. Happy tunes!

10 Things To Do Before Buying A Novel

March 7th, 2008

OK, you don’t get much time to read novels anymore. You used to but that was another life. Before you could pick up something that appealed and because you read so much, you weren’t too disappointed if it didn’t grab you like you thought it would. Things have changed. Now when you pick up a novel to read it has to get you in quickly or it will collect dust on your bedside table. There are too many other things demanding your attention…like sleep!

And when you go to the bookshop sometimes its hard not to be overwhelmed by the sheer number of books on offer, especially with the big mega stores becoming the norm. So what to do?

I’ve put together a checklist that with a little bit of preparation can help you wade through
the sea of books and help you pick a surefire winner: a novel that will captivate YOU.

1. The best place to start is to look out in magazines, newspapers and online for book reviews - see what is being billed as the latest must read. Even if you don’t have time to read the whole review, jot down the title and author as one to look out for.

2. Ask friends for the best book they have read in the last few months or this year or the last few years if like you they really are struggling with the whole when-am-I-going-to-find-time-to-read-a-novel?-thing. Don’t just ask them what book was their favourite; ask them why they liked it. Was it an unusual story, was the pace so fast they needed a crash helmet, did it have edge of the seat suspense, did it remind them of growing up? You want to know what exactly made it a great read for them. This will help you to refine your search, especially if they say they liked the quirky twist in the ending and you don’t do quirky. Just because you’re close friends doesn’t automatically mean you like the same books.

3. Ask the people behind the counter at your favourite bookshop what they enjoyed reading and get them to take you to it or give you a specific reference number so you can find it easily yourself.

4. When you get the book in your hands look at the cover. Is it a catchy title? Does the cover appeal to you? Despite the old saying about not judging book covers, publishers put a lot of time and effort into creating a captivating cover and title. Does it work for you?

5. Turn it over and read the back. Does it still appeal? Do you only like reading modern books and this is set in the 1800s? It’s important to be fairly ruthless at this stage. If the premise for the story doesn’t leave you wanting more, chances are the writing probably won’t either.

6. Look at the size of the book. I know this isn’t something for the purists but if you don’t get time to read many novels, don’t launch back in with a 700 page tome or it will probably take you all year and then you’ll be frustrated and annoyed at wasting time and money on something you haven’t enjoyed.

7. The next step is crucial. Read the opening - does it get you in straight off? Novels have a bit more time to seduce you than a short story but not much these days. A good opening is like someone placing a thread around your finger and gently tugging on it. They’ve got you but can they keep you?

8. Has the author mentioned 10 characters and 5 different place names in the first 3 paragraphs? You want to be captivated not confused, remember? If your main reading time is before you drop off to sleep, books that have lots of characters and places or even a family tree at the beginning are a warning that it gets complicated and you need to keep track of who is who and what they’re up to.

9. Are there lots of long sentences or are they short and sharp? Lots of short sentences usually mean action and pace. Something. Is happening. Right now. Usually it’s best to go for a story with a combination of both - one that suits your preferred action/background information mix.

10. If you still think the book in your hands is worthy, randomly flip open the book in 5 places and see whether it is densely packed with text. Is there dialogue at each page you stop? No dialogue usually means that a book is more descriptive rather than direct scenes. If you want a compelling read then go for something with a fair amount of dialogue; if you don’t mind a slower pace then bits of dialogue here and there is probably enough to keep you going.

If it all stacks up, buy it and enjoy. Just one more tip though. If it doesn’t captivate you in the first 100 pages and you find reading it a chore, give it up. Don’t keep persisting just because you don’t like leaving things unfinished. The book won’t feel hurt if you don’t finish it. And the author will never know.

Power Red: A Few Facts About the Color Red

February 16th, 2008

The color red is most often associated with power and passion.
It is a fierce and emotionally intense color. Red symbolizes
speed, sexuality, and style. Fast cars are red. Beautiful women
wear red clothes and red lipstick. Red is also the color of
romance and love. If you want to express your love for a woman
with flowers, the flowers must be red. In all cases, whether red
is worn by a woman, or used in home décor, it will always
attract attention.

Red often gives conflicting messages. Red means “stop” when used
on a street light, but it means “go” when worn as lipstick or
given as flowers. Red means danger when used on signs and fire
extinguishers. Red means both romantic love and sexual lust. Red
is the color of Communism, but it also symbolizes Christmas when
mixed with the colors green, white, and gold.

There are many variations of red: scarlet and vermilion are the
shocking and extreme reds, while pink, maroon, and crimson are
subtler reds.

Fashion experts always recommend at least a splash of red when
dressing for a job interview or any other important meeting,
because red symbolizes power, decisiveness and leadership. In
home décor, red is rarely used as a base color but often as
highlights. One wall of a room may be painted red to create a
feature wall that attracts attention. A sofa may be splashed
with red cushions. A centerpiece of red flowers may be used for
a special dinner event.

Red is so intense a color that it doesn’t suit everyone. A rule
of thumb: drive a red car, but wear black. Red clothing has the
effect of making a person look fuller than they really are. In
all instances, red is an extreme color and should be chosen with
caution.

Custom Designed Hats | Set The Trend

January 25th, 2008

If you would like to be a trendsetter, then wearing custom
designed hats is the way to go. Whether it is designed by you or
someone specializing in it, you are assured that your hat will
be a one of a kind. And when you venture out in public sporting
it, people will comment on it asking you where you bought it.
Surprise them by saying that you didn’t buy the hat, you
designed it.

The process of custom designing a hat is not as involved as you
may think. There are alot of companies that will do this for
you, even providing suggestions about certain styles, colors, or
modern fashion. View their gallery of past hats to see if you
like their work, and ask them some questions about the entire
process. The procedure will undoubtedly involve input from you
and there are some basic bits of information you can prepare
ahead of time to help. Here’s a small list of things to
consider:

1 - What style are you going to go with? Most companies will
have predefined styles for you to choose from, or you can design
your own. The cost will most likely be higher when designing
your own, but it is worth it if you want completely unique
attire.

2 - What colors are you going to use for the various parts of
it? There is a whole list of available colors to specify, but
you should decide up front which way to go with it. This may
depend on many factors such as what clothing you would wear with
it, what season of the year it will be used most, or if it will
be worn by ladies or men.

3 - What size or sizes will you need? There is alot of
information available online as to how to measure your head for
the correct hat size. Check with the company if you are unsure
and they can give you explicit instructions.

4 - Are you going to need any custom embroidery or emblems? You
should really consider doing this as it will add one more level
of uniqueness to your cap. Have an artist draw something up, or
do it yourself. This is a wonderful way to ‘finish’ the hat
off.

There is other information you will be required to submit,
depending on the manufacturer and type of hats you decide on.
The list above will get you going in the right direction and
speed up the design phase of the project.

What are some of the other uses for custom hats? If you are part
of a sporting team, or on a project at work you can have hats
custom designed for all of you. It will portray a united team to
all those you encounter, and bring everyone closer together.
This will help achieve the ultimate goal, whether that is
winning the championship or finishing the project ahead of
schedule. The positive effect on all cannot be overstated.

Hopefully before you purchase your next hat, you will consider a
custom designed one instead. For only a little more money and a
small amount of work on your end, you will end up with your own
creation that is a one of a kind.

Farming Recipes And Traveler’s Backpack For WoW Gold

December 1st, 2007

Traveler’s backpack sells for A LOT. Usually, the Alliance realm
is two or even three times more populated than the Hordes. To
start, have your main character on the Horde side because
that’ll be the character in which will be receiving all the WoW
gold. You’ll need to farm a little gold for your Alliance
character. When you’ve collected about 20 gold pieces go to the
nearst Auction house and buy a Traveler’s bag. Then fly to
Tanaris and set your buyout price very low.

Now log onto your main character and buyout those bags. Be sure
to do it quick so no one else grabs it before you do. Since the
Alliance population is much bigger, there are much more bags
available in the Auction House and the normally cost cheaper. If
you sell them on the Horde side you will get a lot more for what
its worth. A bag goes for around 5 gold pieces on Alliance and
sells for 10 gold pieces on Horde. That’s 100% profit right
there.

Normally I would transfer over around 4 bags each time. That
would be about 20 gold. Within a week I can farm about 4,000
gold pieces. That is a pretty decent amount even with the
auction house taking about 15% on fees.

There are some recipes that sells for a great amount of gold.
Best sellers are “Brothers Knaz” and “Gnaz Blunderflames” in
STV. They sell Schematic: Deadly Scope and Schematic: Mechanical
Dragonling. You can only buy one of each per day. Mechanical
Dragonling costs one gold each which can easily sell for six
gold. Deadly Scope costs 20 silver and sells for about 5 gold
pieces. Another nice receipe is the Mithril Mechanical
Dragonling, sold by Ruppo Zipcoil in Hinterlands. Costs 40
silver to buy and sells easily for 5 gold. I can on average
about 100 gold per week running these small errands. It isn’t
very high income unlike selling Traveler’s bags but it’s a quick
method with an extremely high profit margin.

KAIF & OBLOM - Artist Book for $1,000,000,000

November 12th, 2007

Every artist has his own work, which he considers to be the most
considerable no matter how others understand it.

The desire to create something exclusive lives in every man.
Women do not need that, because any woman is able to have a baby
which is the most important in her life. Hence, a man has a
tendency to create perpetuum mobile or the absolute, and they
choose either the complicated or simple way. A complicated one
is the way of cognition and creating of something exclusive,
even if at the moment of creating it breaks all known decrees of
nature. And a simple one - the most common - is the way of
destruction. As a rule, this way is used by persons with
absolutely defective state of mind.

The occasion of creating is generally banal, like everything in
this world - the proof to himself and others that I CAN DO IT!
The proof of his POWER, that is with help of this illusion to
slip through eternity or at least less remote future.

But to make this attempt work it is necessary to have a victim;
and the victim is the creator himself.

On 1 st July 1996 to my lodging, which I proudly called a
studio, came a man, Amiran Guntaishvili and said, “I need an
artist who will be able to design two books, and one of them is
called Kaif and another Oblom”.

Of course, I laughed, because the combination of such words,
especially for a Russian man, means nothing serious. But… we
were acquainted with for a long time, and the past gave me cause
for perceiving him as a very serious man and a businessman.
Particularly, I was glad for him as the man who was able to
write books, what was bolt from the blue for me. We were talking
for a long time. It wasn’t even a conversation but a joint
flight to the mere mutual fantasy. The more we talked the more I
understood that it was the question of a unique work of art.

As an artist I could choose two ways:

One way was simply to paint the author’s idea; to paint and
forget.

The second one was to turn this idea into the unique work of
art, being unprecedented in its apparent simplicity so far.

I chose the second way, perfectly realizing, what I risked and
made a sacrifice. In itself the idea of Amiran Guntaishvili was
not new, and there had been made some attempts to accomplish it.
However, the previous authors’ mistake was the following: they
presented volumetric idea unambiguously, i.e. on the same plane
or interpretation, presenting and considering a detail as the
whole.

AMIRAN’S IDEA

One day in Amiran’s presence a man simply said, “Oh! I wish
someone would give me a million dollars just for the hell of it!”

As it was said in the presence of a great number of people,
everybody laughed except Amiran who thought and said, “They
won’t give it to you for the hell of it, but they will give it
to you for NOTHING!”

The idea was born in a split second, “All one needs to do is to
create nothing and insert it into the book “Kaif”, that is to
make a book’s plaster cast or a notebook, to write on the cover
page a pen-name - Homo sapiens, the title Kaif and to sell it
for one million dollars”.

What is the value of this book? Its value is that a purchaser
buys not a book or a notebook but his own pleasure obtained by
his own intellect from the idea, i.e. his own Kaif or Nothing.
Due to this very reason the author of the idea does not have any
right to introduce his content, because no one but a buyer can
know what his Kaifis.

Thus a buyer turns into the latest genius, because he becomes a
genius not only with the help of his own intellect but also for
money, and this gives the appearance of a genius. Also this book
can be perceived as whatever one wishes and to see in it any
content in any language and one copy only.

But they won’t understand, will they?

Then it is necessary to create one more book “Oblom”, which will
be the author’s idea book, Amiran’s one, under the pseudonym
Ubralo Adamiani, which in Georgian language stands for a Simple
Man. The author of this book has an exclusive right to introduce
his content and to present it to the purchaser of the book Kaif
as a frustrated Oblom of the author’s idea, if such a purchase
takes place.

If the purchase doesn’t occur, the idea’s author at any time can
write his Oblom in the book Oblom, publish it in 100,000 copies
and get his million.

I was delighted with Amiran’s idea and instantly understood how
many-sided it is in its seeming simplicity and infinitely
substantial. I agreed to make it at once.

On 15 th November 1996 at 4 p.m. local time Amiran and I were
sitting in the unassuming cafe. Before us on the table there was
the first in the world absolutely empty and totally simple
object of luxury or “Immaterialized Nothing”, the resume of XX
century; the last book of XX century and simultaneously the
first book of XXI century; the last book of 2nd millennium and
simultaneously the first book of 3d millennium; the first in the
world dilogy in which nothing is written; the first in the world
object which reads the spectator wishing to read the content of
the books where nothing is written; the first in the world
object assigned for multi-millionaires valued at $ 1 000 000 000
( book photos at
http://www.donvalerigrig.com/kaif_and_oblom.html ).

On it there were lying the keys to Amiran’s old car. We were
drinking champagne silently. I felt warm, nice and unbearably
sad.

The History Of Keno

November 6th, 2007

Keno was introduced in 200 BC by the Chinese military leader,
Cheung Leung who used this game as a finance resource for his
failing army. He used this game as a finance resource to help
his failing army. The city of Cheung was waging a war, and after
awhile of war time appeared to be facing national famine with
the drastic decrease in supplies. Cheung Leung needed to come up
with a fast fix for the economic disaster and to produce revenue
for his army. He thusly created the game we now know as keno and
it was a great success.

Keno used to be known as the White Pigeon Game, since the
winning numbers were delivered by pigeons from larger cities to
the smaller villages. The lottery ‘Keno’ was brought to the
United States in the 1800s by Chinese immigrants who came to the
US to work. In those times, Keno was played with 120 numbers.

Keno is generally played with 80 numbers in most of American
based casinos as well as online casinos. Keno is largely enjoyed
today because of the relaxed nature of playing the game and the
simple fact that there are no skills needed to play Keno.
Despite the fact that the odds of winning are terrible, there is
always the chance that you will win quite big with very little
gambling investment.

Today, Keno is played with 80 numbers and 20 numbers are drawn
each game. Players of Keno can choose from 2 to 10 numbers and
bet on them, as much or as little as they want to. The payout of
Keno is according to the bets made and the roll out of matching
numbers.

The ‘thousand character classic’ is the heritage produced by
keno history-a Chinese poem of 1000 numbers, which is known as a
set of independent characters placed in a rhymed form. It was
originally a new way for children to learn, however the poem is
so well know that the characters are often used as a romantic
numbering system. On the original keno boards, instead of using
just numbers, they used these characters.

Keno grew in popularity in the United States near the end of the
19th century when the Chinese characters were replaced with more
familiar, American numbers. Lotteries were not covered under the
legalization of gambling in the state of Nevada in 1931. The
casinos changed the name of the ‘Chinese lottery’ to ‘horse race
keno’ utilizing the idea that the numbers are horses and you
want your horses to come in. When a law passed that taxed off
track betting, Nevada swiftly changed the name to ‘keno’.

Bingo – Good for the Mind?

October 30th, 2007

When we think of bingo, genius and brainpower don’t always spring to mind; these attributes have tended to be reserved for poker and other games of skill and luck. The image of a grandparent sitting in a community hall with a cup of tea and a card of bingo does not lend itself to the intrigue of psychology and mental agility. However, according to a study by the University of Southampton’s Psychology Department, bingo may not be the trivial pastime many would take it for. Researchers there insist that bingo keeps the mind sharp and equate this as especially important to people as they get older.

The tests conducted revealed that bingo players were more accurate and faster in tests that measured memory, mental speed and their ability to absorb information from the environment around them, than those who did not play the game.

What seems to be the key advantage to the sustained playing of bingo is the concept of time. There is no doubt that games such as chess, poker and backgammon all stretch the mind and keep the brain functioning. Whereas the hand-eye coordination needed for bingo may not be as exhaustive as for other games, the time constraint in which players must check their numbers is key to the sustenance of mental agility.

The tests comprised of 112 people within the age brackets of 18 to 40 and 60 to 82. Half of each set played bingo. The results concluded that all bingo players were more accurate and quicker than non-players. Interestingly, in certain tests, the older players did better than the younger players. More and more research is supporting the theory that a regular partaking of activities that exercise the mind is very beneficial to the maintenance of optimum mental functioning as we get older.

Younger bingo players tended to be faster, but the older ones were more accurate. Many people have suggested that the reason people dismiss bingo as a “junior” gaming pastime is because we so often associate it with pensioners. The social stigma of bingo has kept it out of the major casinos and therefore reduced its respect amongst the “hipper” echelons of today’s society.

Many would be led to conclude that the above study is simply out of proportion in the sense that a game of bingo is hardly a satisfactory workout for the mind in terms of endurance and mental skill. To an extent they would be right. But what the tests seem to be suggesting crucially, is that it is the prolonged or regular partaking in the game over a sustained period of time that will lead to cognitive benefits.

Then of course there are those who believe that any form of gambling being proclaimed to be beneficial to the mind is nothing short of an aberration. Whilst certainly milder in terms of the funds that change hands than other gambling games, bingo is still a game where one pays money to gain money and as such has been criticised from certain groups in society. However, the social aspect of the game cannot be overlooked and it is this type of play that would be encouraged to facilitate the mental benefits as concluded by the study described above.

In the UK, there are around three million bingo players. It is hoped that this study and the growing body of research around it will help to promote the game to those who otherwise would have written it off as something to be enjoyed with gardening, tea and everything else we assume people over the age of 65 suddenly develop a passion for.
