Traveling to Nice and the South of France

January 31st, 2008

Nice is in the south of France. The Queen of the French Riviera,
which the French call ” la Cote d’Azur” (AzureCoast or Blue Coast).
It is a wonderful city with lots of charm and character; a mixture of French and Italian cultures where the people are easy-going and friendly even if you don’t speak French.

Although you might think it is a summer resort, you can visit Nice at any time of the year and still have a good time.
If you happen to go in the winter, you will be surprised to see
flowers in their numerous parks and gardens. Nice has a Mediterranean winter, so the temperature stays around 40 to 50 degrees during the coldest months but if you like skiing, ski resorts such as Valberg and Isola 2000 can be reached by car in one or two hours.
If you go in the summer, get ready to share the city with lots
of tourists. The popular streets where most restaurants and cafes are, can get crowded, but they can be a lot of fun if you enjoy people watching; and since most of the streets are closed to traffic, it is not hard to just walk around and enjoy the upbeat atmosphere.

Nice has a major airport and its close location to the city makes getting there a cinch.

Finding a hotel should be easy, since there are plenty of accommodations for all kinds of budgets. The author is a frequent guest of the Meridien Hotel, a 4 star hotel located on the Promenade des Anglais, facing the Bay of Angels (Baie des Anges).

-Things to see in Nice:

-Promenade des Anglais.

The Victorian English residents of the 1800’s provided the funds to build the beautiful boulevard, hence its name.
It is a wide avenue that follows the bay’s coast line and it’s lined with beautiful palm trees and flowers.

-Hotel Negresco.

Beautiful and glamorous, it is located at 37 Promenade des Anglais and if you are not rich enough to stay there, you must go and see it.

-Old Nice.

Winding narrow streets with Italianate buildings painted in earthly colors, describes this old part of the city. You will
enjoy strolling. people watching and quaint little shops full of
charming provencal crafts.

-Marche aux Fleurs.

Located on the Cours Saleya, the flower market is
Open Tuesday through Sunday, 7am-5pm, but if you decide to
go, check with your hotel for the hours of operation. You can also have lunch or dinner there, where a large variety of restaurants set up tables and chairs outside where you can dine in a pleasant and fun atmosphere.

-Marc Chagall Museum.

If you like modern art, you can catch a glimpse of the painter’s most important collection. The hours of operation vary depending on the season so check with your hotel clerk before you go.

Nice is so well located that you can take half-day and full-day
trips either by car or by public transportation.

Easily reached towns by car or public transportation are:
Monaco, Eze, Grasse, St Paul de Vence, Cannes and St Tropez.

-Monaco-

A symbol of glamour and elegance, Monaco sits on a beautiful stretch of the Mediterranean coast. Its most famous town Monte Carlo, has much to offer with its casinos, boutiques and exotic gardens.
Don’t forget to visit the village of Monaco, located high on “the rock” as it is affectionally called by the locals. It is a charming town with shops and cafes and a wonderful view of the sea.

-Eze-

This small medieval village perched on a hill is a must see.
Both tourists and artists flock to Eze during the summer months
because of its picturesque setting and magnificent vues.
If you are staying in Nice, you can make it a half-day trip or just stop there for lunch and continue to Monaco for a full-day trip.
If you are feeling rich, have lunch at the Chevre d’Or. The restaurant offers fine cuisine and breathtaking panoramas. The restaurant is only open for lunch.

-Grasse-

Considered the perfume capital of France Grasse is a small hilly
town with beautiful parks and panoramic views.
I you go to Grasse, you must visit the perfume factories. The
biggest is Parfumerie Fragonard. An English speaking guide will show you the process of extracting the perfume from hundreds of pounds of flower petals.

-St Paul de Vence-

A picture perfect medieval town, sitting on top of a hill, St Paul de Vence has been painted by many artists and photographed by thousands of tourists. It is located 19 miles from Nice.
Enjoy a meal at the famous Colombe d’Or Restaurant or sip a beer at an outdoor cafe while watching a local game of petanque.

-Cannes-

Cannes sits on the shores of La Napoule bay, sorrounded by a backdrop of Mediterranean hills.
While Nice has the Promenade des Anglais, Cannes has la Croisette
Boulevard, an elegant promenade, lined with palm trees and and gardens.
Cannes hosts the famous Cannes Film Festival every year and it is
most favored by celebrities. So if you go, make sure to do a lot of people watching, because you never know…

-St Tropez-

Once a small fishing village, St Tropez is now a summer place for the jet set. Its setting on the southern shore of France, made it
attractive to turn-of-the-century artists who were then followed by writers, poets and eventually movie stars and their fans. It is now internationally famous.

So get your tickets, book your hotel and go to the south of France. I promise you will have an unforgettable experience

New Zealand’s North Island

January 21st, 2008

From Cape Reinga in the north right through to Wellington in the south, New Zealand’s North Island offers some unique opportunities to tourist and locals alike.

Auckland city is the busiest New Zealand city and arguably the commercial capital of New Zealand. Being one of the most populated cities, Auckland offers some of the best shopping opportunities in New Zealand.

Wellington is the capital city and has a population of around 400,00. The main attraction in Wellington would have to be Te Papa, which is a museum located in the city. While at Te Papa, make time for a stroll around Queen’s wharf or a cruise in the Wellesley or catch a play at Circa theatre. The Interislander ferry can also be caught from Wellington to travel across the Cook strait to Picton in the South Island.

Other attractions in the North Island include the Maori village in Rotorua, ski fields in the central North Island, stunning beaches in the Coromandel and Hawke’s Bay, Huka falls near Taupo and Mt Taranaki (also known as Mt Egmont), which was the location for the filming of the Tom Cruise flick “The Last Samurai”. Lord of the Rings tours are also available and extremely popular with Tolkien fans!

Keystone at Your Own Pace

January 17th, 2008

Something was missing from your last vacation. You had some laughs, saw some interesting sights, and returned home feeling pretty rested, but there were a few things that rubbed you the wrong way. You disliked having to eat out for every meal, and even grabbing a quick bite always turned into an overpriced production. You appreciated the chance to get the whole family together, but piling into your tiny hotel room led to a few tense moments. Your lodgings were a bargain, but all the money you ended up spending on transportation, parking, tips, and that moment of weakness when you raided the mini-bar, definitely pushed your vacation beyond your planned budget.

It’s time for the next trip, and you’re ready to do it right. You’ve decided to take the family to Keystone, which you’ve heard is an all-around paradise for active-minded vacationers. To ensure that all goes well, you’re looking for that extra something that will set this getaway apart from all the others. What could that special ingredient be?

Imagine waking up without the helpful beep-beep of the alarm clock, wrapping yourself in a cozy bathrobe, and sipping a cup of coffee as you take in the powdery peaks from your picture window. This moment of calm is soon replaced by sheer exhilaration, as you find yourself zooming down the very slopes that you were admiring just a few minutes ago. When your muscles call out for a rest, hop on the next shuttle and be deposited at your front door, where you’ll marvel anew at the welcoming sight of your classy, oh-so-convenient mountainside condo.

After your visit to the grocery store down the street, your pantry is now packed with all the staples you’ll need for the duration of your trip. Healthy, pre-skiing breakfast foods and a few snacks for cocktail hour will let you save a few bucks and invite you to set the pace for this vacation. There are several restaurants and bars in the nearby village, but don’t be surprised if your end-of-the-day soak in the whirlpool tub has inspired you to hole up in your cabin with a good book and a warm fire.

You can’t get over the fact that the wooded setting of your vacation rental makes you feel secluded and relaxed, yet you really aren’t that far away from an abundance of activities. The kids discovered an ice skating rink just a short walk away, and you plan to venture all of six miles down the road for some great outlet mall shopping. Never before have you felt so well-situated without being kept awake at night by traffic, noise, and the voices of your fellow vacationers. You were surprised to hear that the night owls in the family stayed up and watched a movie last night, at the same time you were enjoying some of the best and most undisturbed sleep of your life.

If you are more of a summertime traveler, the perks of a Keystone vacation home will be just as noteworthy. This is the place for mountain biking, fishing, nature observing, and golfing, all before a backdrop of stunning mountains and turquoise skies. You’ll enjoy everything all more when it only requires a quick walk or bike ride to get to your desired location, so forget about gas prices and be kind to the earth for a few days.

The heated pool will bring the family together for an afternoon of fun, as will the gas grill and expansive patio surrounded by aspens and blue spruce. Make yourselves at home in this privileged spot, and keep in mind that you’re probably spending about the same amount of money as you did on your last, less-relaxed vacation.

If this scenario has ignited your imagination and promised to help lift the burden from your shoulders, then don’t waste any time researching all your Keystone Vacation Rental options. There is a place out on the mountain, waiting for you and your family to come claim it for a few blessed days of well-deserved tranquility.

Visit HomeAway.com to discover the vacation rental that will make your next trip far better than the last.

Booking Your Family Holidays Online

January 9th, 2008

With the Internet being more accessible than ever before, people are online for longer and at a later hour, it’s even starting to replace the television for evening entertainment in some housholds.

Holiday companies are adapting to this demand by offering their holidays online, “no great shakes there then” I hear you say. But holidays cost a lot, who is going to spend over a thousand pounds online not knowing if the holiday is actually available.

With the holiday companies that say “book online” but you find out it’s just an enquiry form, i feel this is at the least mis-leading and a nuisance. Customer confidence is what is needed, companies have to offer their product in a clear and easy to manage website with secure booking and LIVE availability status - this is what we are beginning to expect.

The innovotive holiday companies understand the customers needs and have supplied their demands, yes there are companies out there that have got LIVE booking systems, secure online payment facilities, immediate email confirmation facility and credit card anti-fraud sytems. With the Internet evolving at an incredible rate it is possible to search and find all of your holiday needs with a few clicks of your mouse. The days of looking through out of date holidays brochures are numbered, with the Internet you can now email web pages to your family and friends, read up about your chosen resort, look at dozens of photos or virtual tours, look into family travel insurance, check out your travel options and most importantly see the price and availability of your accommodation and resort, then once decided it can all be booked online in one go at any time of day and night - securely. Now thats how it should be.

Book Online & save money

Saving money is another key factor when searching online, you window shop and search for bargains in the high street, so theres no reason why you can’t do it online, you may be doing a little more leg work or should i say finger clicking but it’s quicker, more enjoyable and substantially cheaper. “Book online and SAVE” is a common phrase you will see when browsing the internet. Companies want you to book online, it saves them time and money, so why not take advantage of it.

I foresee the traditional holiday printed glossy brochure being a thing of the past pretty soon and with broadband and soon to come `super broadband` there won’t be any reason at all not to visit your favourite travel website for a quick virtual tour of your favourite holiday resorts - and at lightning speed.

Is Spanish property still good value for money?

January 3rd, 2008

The response to this question, in numerous cases, is “yeah”! Locations such as Costa del Sol now look costly for normal budgets nevertheless, there remain lots of good buys to be had in numerous locales of Spain. Flats in that Costa Blanca remain available beginning at 100,000 Euros, (£69,750) & villas beginning at close to 190,000 Euros, (£132,500). Around Murcia & that Costa Almeria property is proportionally cheaper with restoration projects starting around 75,000E (£52,300) & villas beginning at close to 160,000 Euros, (£111,640). If someone buys off plan it ensures that that worth of that property boosts as that the plan unfolds & nears completion. Folks purchasing early in that whole building work obtain that greatest deal & returns on investment.

Property around Spain is still rising around price and with by far the ease of access from all European airports it continues to be by far the most attractive place for all year sun. It might be a valuable investment, with by far the added benefit of super holidays or perhaps an ideal setting for permanent living.

There are still beautiful areas in Spain that the tourists & the investors have not discovered. For example the Alpujarras area in southern Spain is a heavenly, mountainous place which is a bounty in hidden peace & amazing prices. The sandy strands in Costa Tropical aren’t far away & airport access is no problem through Granada or Almeria.

Stretching southwards from your lower area of your Sierra Nevada, your Alpujarras contains your regional capital, your seaside community of Almera, as its south-east border, with your seaside community of Motril in Granada forming your south western cut-off. The locality contains a rich contrast in weather within a limited area - you may be loafing in a sub-tropical shore merely 20 minutes from your house or skiing in your snows of your Sierra Nevada merely two hours distant, depending in your mood and your time of year! Check out as many areas as you can. You can still find properties in spain at bargain prices.

Property values in the region are nowdays at astonishingly large levels for approximately Spain. A village house in the region of Valor requiring repairs for approximately 26,000 Euros (less than £20,000). A two bed renovated property nearby for approximately 155,000E £108,165. A 3,000 m2 building site for approximately 26,000E (less than £20,000). New two bed apartments from around 85,000E fifty nine thousand pounds. Cortijos requiring renovation for approximately approximately 50,000 Euros thirty five thousand pounds. Restored cortijos for approximately approximately 100,000E 70,000 pounds. Why don’t you have your own finca constructed from around 120,000E (£83,750) or procure a fully working commercial olive producing farm - 24 hectares for approximately 495,000E (£345,450). There are options to obtain hotels, restaurants or b & b businesses to supply you with a working income in this up and coming region much liked by the Spanish population for approximately their own vacations - with everything at values the rest of Spain has forgotten about.

Investors would do well to act briskly though. News of this foremerly obscured region is leaking out. Costs are starting to rise and so in the next few years the concrete bargains here should be a thing of the past.

Featured Location - Alhaurin el Grande, Malaga, Spain

January 2nd, 2008

During Roman times, the settlement was thought to have been blessed by the gods due to its fertility, favourable climate and proximity to precious mineral deposits. This led the Moors to later name the town Alhaurin, literally meaning the Garden of Allah.

The town has undergone many tribulations, including an earthquake in 1680, various plagues, and numerous invasions and occupations by the French, Romans, Moors and others. Today, it’s a prosperous town with a population of 27,000, of which roughly 2,000 are foreigners.

Why buy there?

Only a short drive from Malaga’s famous beaches, and close to the Sierra Nevada ski resorts, Alhaurin el Grande is perfectly situated for those seeking a traditional area untouched by tourism, yet close to all the attractions and amenities of the Costa del Sol. It’s close to Malaga’s major cities, being just south of Coin and north of Mijas, and it’s only 15 kilometres from Malaga airport. It lies in an area of outstanding natural beauty, with a number of lakes and waterfalls in Barranco Blanco, while to the southeast are extensive forests, pock marked with Neolithic remains.

Alhaurin el Grande enjoys an average annual temperature of 17 degrees Celsius, and is a pretty town with whitewashed houses and colourful shutters. There are a number of attractions, including the 12th century Moorish Archway, the old Arabic fort and the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, with its Roman columns and town church. The Churches of La Ermita de San Sebastian and El Convento y las Agonias are also well worth visiting.

The town is famed for its many traditional celebrations, including the Feria de Mayo and El Dia de la Cruz in May, Dia de Jesus in June, and the Dia de la Virgin in August. In addition, the Easter week celebrations attract tourists from across Europe. Improvements are currently being made to the areas infrastructure. However, there are already two golf courses nearby, while the surrounding countryside offers plenty of hiking, cycling and climbing opportunities.

Where to buy

Within Alhaurin el Grande, there are a number of properties to choose from, in fact, one estate agent alone has over 400 properties on his books. For 165,000 Euros, you can find a four bedroom townhouse, while out of town, a semi detached finca can be yours for as little as 184,000 Euros. At the other end of the scale, if your budget allows, you can choose to purchase an exclusive villa, with a swimming pool and 25,000 square metres of land, for 435,000 Euros. Alternatively, 250,000 Euros will get you a two bedroom villa located in one of the town’s urbanisations.

There are also a number of bargains to be had in the surrounding areas. Northwest of Alhaurin is Coin, which has a foreign population of over 1,700. This is a busy commercial town with a number of attractions, including the famous shrine of Nuestra Senora de Fuensanta.

Popular with English buyers, there are many traditional properties for sale, with more modern developments also springing up around the town. Prices start at 58,000 Euros for a plot of land, while a three bedroom apartment can be found for 89,000 Euros. A renovated townhouse costs around 230,000 Euros.

Recently, there has been a boom in developments in Alhaurin de la Torre, which is situated to the east of its namesake, Alhaurin el Grande. With citrus groves and avocado orchards providing a stunning backdrop to the residential areas, around 1,700 foreigners live here, and you can buy a townhouse requiring renovation for around 148,000 Euros.

The small town of Alora, 40 kilometres north of Malaga, is a typical pueblo blanco (whitewashed village). With 1500 foreign residents, this tiny village is set on a hilltop, boasting spectacular views and traditional values.

There are a number of plots of land for sale, all with stunning valley views, and a plot of 3,000 square metres costs as little as 50,000 Euros. A country house can be yours for a mere 70,000 Euros, while a three bedroom village house sells for an average of 300,000 Euros.

The property market

Over the last few years, inland Spain has seen demand for property rise steeply, fuelled by foreign buyers. Some areas have seen appreciation reaching 35 per cent per annum as investors attempt to find a more authentic, rural lifestyle. These high rates of appreciation, coupled with affordable property, make the area an excellent investment.

The increased number of budget flights to the area has also helped to fuel this demand, as has recent investment in infrastructure. Improvements include the arrival of the bullet train, which now travels from Madrid to the city of Bobadilla, and the opening of an international airport in Antequera. Consequently, areas within commuting distance from Malaga, such as Alhaurin and the Guadalhorce Lakes, have seen a huge rise in popularity. Of course, with over 2.6 million foreign residents in Andalucia, it’s also not surprising that many buyers have been forced inland.

There are many nationalities purchasing property in Alhaurin, and demand from foreign buyers is high, especially within urbanisations such as the Alhaurin Golf and Country Club development. With strict building regulations in place, fincas to renovate and traditional whitewashed townhouses and extremely popular, and this has caused prices to increase significantly in recent years. Nevertheless, property in this area remains significantly cheaper than on the coast.

Prices have been going up by between 17 and 20 per cent annually, yet compared with the coastal resorts, the cost of a property is a staggering 30 per cent lower inland.

For example, a two bedroom apartment in Marbella will set you back by an average
of 378,936 Euros, while in Alhaurin, you can buy a similar property for 153,000 Euros.

Typical properties

There’s a healthy mix of the old and new in Alhaurin. Property in the area includes newly built apartments in the centre of town, while there are a number of villas available in the urbanisations on Alhaurin’s outskirts. Look outside of Alhaurin’s boundaries and there’s a plethora of cortijos and fincas to be found in the surrounding countryside.

Most buyers are looking to purchase a traditional country home, complete with two acres of land and some fruit trees. Wherever you buy, given the geographical situation of Alhaurin, property is virtually guaranteed stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valley.

Lettings

Inland Spain is a popular holiday destination, especially inland Malaga. It’s important to recognise that the lettings market inland is different to the coast, though. Long term lets are more infrequent and the short term rentals market is limited by the longer winter season. However, with a significant increase in the number of eco tourists, 7.2 per cent in the Andalucia area alone, inland regions, with their numerous activities, have reaped the benefits.

The income you can generate varies drastically, but a three bedroom country house can provide between 1,200 Euros to 1,500 Euros a month, while a townhouse can earn you up to 800 Euros a month.

If you live in the Guadalhorce valley, you’ll find that you’re never more than 25 minutes from the coast, which makes this area hugely popular among tourists. Consequently, it can be very profitable in terms of rental income As well as offering a healthy short term market, there’s also a strong long term rentals market, as many potential buyers arrive in Alhaurin with the intention of renting for between six months to a year before they buy. However, most owners will only allow long term rental contracts over the winter period to avoid eating into the more lucrative summer months.

Living there

An area of outstanding natural beauty, life is lived in a traditional Spanish vein in the Alhaurin area, with centuries of culture and tradition evident. In fact, values reflect those seen 30 years ago in the UK. Even though the town of Alhaurin has become very cosmopolitan, and there are a large number of foreign residents living there, life maintains a Spanish feel. This is enriched by the local cuisine, such as migas (breadcrumbs fried with garlic) and gachas cachorrenas (porridge with spices).

The local population refer to Alhaurin as ‘inland Marbella’ due to its thriving economy and beauty, and the local government is currently undertaking a project to develop the town, with plans for many new facilities. It already boasts a great selection of bars, clubs and restaurants, which makes the area great as a family holiday or rental destination.

Fans of outdoor activities will find that there are many leisure activities to pursue, while the beach is only 15 kilometres away. There are local and international schools in the region and both private and state healthcare are available.

Despite there being a cosmopolitan mix of nationalities, it’s still important to learn the language and make a real effort to integrate yourself into the local community. That way, you can make the most of living in a traditional and welcoming environment.

John and Lynda Laver decided to leave their Bedfordshire home for warmer climes and a more relaxed way of life. Both had stressful jobs in the UK but neither of them felt ready for early retirement they just wanted to work fewer hours and spend more time together, and with their family. They settled on Spain, but from there it was important to ensure the area they chose was accessible, as they had a daughter with young children who needed to be able to reach them easily. John and Lynda had visited the Costa del Sol many times but didn’t want to live in the busy coastal area, instead seeking a location that offered a more Spanish lifestyle.

“A friend recommended that we look inland from Malaga Airport, and suggested towns such as Alhaurin el Grande, Coin and Monda. What we found was the Guadalhorce Valley, an area largely untouched by tourism, with stunning villages and countryside,” says Lynda. They knew it was exactly what they were looking for, and had soon purchased a brand new, four bedroom house in the countryside surrounding Alhaurin el Grande.

It came complete with an acre of land, fruit trees and a working well. John enthuses: “We’ve spent many hours working on the landscaping and have now created a beautiful home where many of our family friends have spent happy holidays with us.”

Since moving to the area, both have found work, with John servicing swimming pools and offering his services as a maintenance man, while Lynda organises the rental of their second property in the Alhaurin Golf and Country Club. “The daily cost of living in Spain is a fraction of that in the UK,” says John, “so we can now afford to spend more time doing the things we want to do, like spending our lunch times enjoying a three course meal in the local taverna!”

Valentine’s Day Slide Show Production

December 9th, 2007

Say, “I love you” with a Valentine’s Day slide show production. What better way to show that special someone how much you love them than with a beautiful and romantic slide show creation? Show the love of your life how much your memories have meant. Take them on a stroll down memory lane and visit those special moments together in a romantic setting with your favorite music. Men - can you think of a more romantic gift?

Most women like to know that men put some thought and effort into their gifts. That their gift wasn’t something spur of the moment or that the secretary - or worse yet - the mother - went out and purchased! You can melt her heart by showing her how much you care with a Valentine’s Day romantic slide show. Just go through all your old photo albums or shoe boxes and gather up some of your favorite photos of the two of you together doing the things you love the most. Then send them to a professional slideshow creation company such as Sands of Time Multimedia Creations and they’ll create a romantic musical video DVD that will bring tears to her eyes - and yours!

After you receive your video, plan a romantic dinner with just the two of you, then with the lights turned down low cuddle together on the sofa or your favorite chair for two and watch your romantic video together. And make sure you remember to purchase some tissues - she’ll be impressed with your thoughtfulness because she will most definitely need them!

And women, you might think that your special man won’t want or appreciate a gift like this, but I have personally seen grown men cry when they watch these videos. It’s sure to touch their heart because they realize how very special and fragile time is as they watch the years go by right before their eyes. Yes, men need a reminder too, to slow down and spend time with the ones they love. By showing them the good times you’ve had together your bring back good memories and feelings that help them to put things into proper perspective and remember how much they really do love you and the time you’ve spent together. After receiving a slideshow, as one man said, “Since my wife gave me this slide show, I have watched it everyday, and I continue to do so because it reminds me how much I love her and how quickly time goes by.”

So whether it’s for Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Anniversary, or Birthday give the love of your life a gift that says, “I love you” like no other gift can - a beautiful and romantic slideshow production. They’ll be glad you did.

The Holiday season will soon be upon us. And for many it will be accompanied by a hectic pace, bah humbug attitudes, or the holiday blues. Already, spouses are beginning to cringe at the thought of spending a portion of the holiday season arguing with the family or spending long hours traveling to have dinner with relatives. Visions of children being out of school for three weeks, with the weather turning too cold for them to be outside, has some parents shuttering in anticipation. For many people the holidays have lost their appeal and the reason for the season has become wrapped in frustration, greed, and disappointment.

Is it time to rekindle your holiday spirit? Are you in need of bringing some life, meaning, and enthusiasm to you and your family’s holiday season this year? If so, you can begin by implementing a few of the inspirational ideas suggested below.

1. Slow down and enjoy the moment.

Repeat the following phase 20 times a day to yourself beginning on November 15 and continuing through the New Year, “I relax into the flow of life and I let life provide all that I need easily and comfortably.” Do this faithfully every day and you will be amazed at the results.

2. Donate some time and energy to a charity.

Giving brings out a special part in all of us. Ring the bell for the Salvation Army, volunteer at a soup kitchen, or help deliver food baskets. Your giving will be rewarded with inner feelings of peace and comfort.

3. Make your own holiday cards to mail to friends and family.

Involve your entire family in designing and coloring a holiday picture for your card. Agree on a saying or text message you want to add. Take it to a Kinko’s or Office Max and have it made into your personalized holiday greeting that includes envelopes to match.

4. Take a unique and creative holiday picture of you or your family.

The popularity of the serious family photo used on a greeting card seems to be increasing. As a fun change of pace, why not surprise your family and friends with a unique or silly photo of you and your children? How about a group picture of the family’s bare feet or a close-up picture of each family member’s bellybutton with a contest to see who can match the bellybutton to the right person? The idea here is to be creative and have fun.

5. Bake cookies or bread and make a personal delivery to a few friends.

Bake as a family. Wrap as a family. And deliver as a family. The personal delivery adds a connecting link from your family to the recipient. It is an effective way to remember that being with someone is as important as doing for someone.

6. Record 5 holiday songs sung by the family or kids and send it to Grandma.

Grandma, Grandpa, or Aunt Julie will enjoy singing along with your family’s rendition of some of the holiday classics. You never know, your family could be the next Partridge family.

7. Give a turkey or ham to five needy families.

Find a need and fill it. Your heart will be filled along the way and your children will learn a valuable lesson in charity.

8. Read a variety of holiday stories.

Change your family bookshelf around so that the holiday stories are visible and available for easy access. Read a different children’s holiday classic each night. The oral reading will benefit your children and as an added bonus, you just might be whisked back to your childhood, recalling the same stories being read to you.

9. Clean out the front hall closet and give last year’s winter wear to Coats for Kids.

Do this activity with your children. It will help them develop the charity habit by seeing what they have and how they can give some of their time, energy, and possessions to help others. A related lesson will occur later. You can help your children see how giving creates space to new things to come to them as well.

10. Attend a holiday concert or festival of music.

Holiday music fills the heart and soul with memories of childhood, friends, family rituals, and special events. Allow your heart to open to the music of the holidays. Let it sooth your soul and be moved by its presence within you.

11. Invite another family over to watch a holiday classic on T.V.

This is a fun and inexpensive way to gather for an evening. Pop some corn and take time to have each person share when they remember seeing the show for the first time.

12. Get out old holiday photos and make a picture time line to display with other decorations.

See how far back in the family’s history you can go with pictures of the holidays gone by. The kids will love seeing all the “old” pictures of you and your holiday guests will too.

13. Make your own ornaments.

Decorate pine cones. Shape Play dough and let it dry. Make chains of green and red construction paper. Buy Styrofoam balls and paint them with glitter, glue, and string. Decorate cookies. The ideas are limitless, flow with it.

14. Go on a “light seeing” tour.

Jump in the car with the family and go on a neighborhood “light seeing” tour. When you get home encourage each person to talk about which light display was liked best and have them tell why. Take a different “light seeing” tour each night.

15. Write thank you notes for neighbors who have decorated their house in an inspiring way.

Many people decorate so that they can bring pleasure to those driving by. Share your appreciation. Let them know how their efforts lifted your spirit and brought joy to your holiday season.

16. Make your own wrapping paper.

Trace cookie cutter shapes onto to large sheets of white paper and color and paint the shapes as desired. Or cut sponges in holiday shapes and sponge paint designs. Use that paper to wrap your holiday gifts.

17. Tell stories of family traditions.

Children love stories and story telling is a powerful tool for helping children learn to read and write. It is an excellent way to stay preserve family traditions and increase the joy of the holiday season.

18. Decorate a tree outside for the animals.

During the winter months many animals find it difficult to locate nutritious foods to eat. By stringing orange rings, apple rings, and carrots and placing them on a tree outside you create a beautiful tree that helps the wildlife survive a difficult time of the year..

19. Create a countdown ceremony that can be followed each evening.

This ceremony can be as simple as following a countdown calendar and opening the next window to lighting a candle and having a special reading that holds religious or spiritual significance to you or your family. The key is making the countdown an event that others will look forward to at the family moves closer to their main holiday celebration.

20. Give the kids disposable camera’s and allow them to take one picture each day from December 1st to January 1st.

Finding the right picture to take can be a learning process for each person young and old. Encourage them to search for something that is meaningful about each day on a personal level. Follow up in January by printing the pictures. Each person can then create their own countdown calendar to use during next year’s holiday season.

Remember, it is you who creates the reason for the season. It is up to you to take charge and design the holiday season you desire. Happy Holidays!
