Selective Perspective

June 11th, 2008

Picture this: A mother and daughter are looking at the snowfall from the front widow of their home. The daughter thinks: “Great, No school tomorrow.” While Mom is thinking, “Great, how will I get to work tomorrow?”

“Lights, Camera… Action!”

By Elizabeth Tull

Andrea Shea Hudson, www.andreasheahudson.com , a coaching friend of mine said to me recently:

“If you’re going to write the script for your life, why not write a great one?”

The Blizzard of 2005 currently going on in New York was my thought with coffee this warm and sunny January morning here in Atlanta. After a quick prayer that no one was seriously harmed, a wave of homesickness swept through me.

How beautiful Boston and New York City are during a snowfall. People outdoors and on-foot, the storm leaving traffic stilled and quieted which opens up the sound of those inhabiting the city without car horns blaring, mass transit buses, and the sea of yellow taxis.

Many neighborhoods feeling like neighborhoods due to increased social activity available when the city is closing down. The various architectures covered in a blanket of undisturbed whiteness, allowing the environment to appear Norman Rockwell-ish, artistic and magical. An abundance of colored hats, gloves and scarves along with some very creative winter clothing for my neighbors and their pets. Children busy with snowball fights, people playing with their dogs, sledding in Central Park or The Boston Commons, snowmen and ice sculptures reflecting the voice of artists’ talents and, of course, the smell of brownstone apartment fireplaces reminding me that there is a warm place awaiting - with a mug of hot chocolate or bowl of tomato soup.

Sleep comes easily that night after a day of outdoor adventure, bonding, and rediscovery.

Meanwhile back in Atlanta, the “adult” I was taught to be took over with my second cup of coffee: Puddles of slush, snow turning gray, brown and yellow; folks cranky due to mass transit systems and airports running off-schedule; salt and plow trucks blocking in vehicles and dirtying windshields. City sanitation workers unable to pick-up and discard piles of garbage; snow days from school with no childcare; frozen wiper blades; and having to walk to the store for provisions in the wind and cold.

I smiled. How drastically my perceptions had altered and shifted. “The scripts I write are based on my perspectives, aren’t they?” I commented to Andrea in my head. The two visions I had just created are two very different scripts based on two very different perspectives. I stood at a crossroad in my mind.

Which perspective of the above two best reflect me today? I thought. I chose to open my recovery and coach training toolbox for the right questions to ask myself:

Which perspective holds more value of the two visions I created? How do I look at the world and its going’s on? Are there adventures and challenges or problems and defeats? Am I feeling scarcity or abundance? Is my glass half empty or over flowing? Do I see possibilities or stops and drama? Did I create the time to check in on these perceptions, or was I being reasonable: I am too busy, tired, over-committed and inundated with more important things. Then I thought:

What could possibly be more important than checking in with or discovering my perspective, since that is the foundation that creates the way my life feels and how I feel about the life I create?

My answer:

The perspective I choose to live from today is a far cry from the perspective I was taught to have through my family experiences, the media, organizations from the past, grade school and my previous choices. I welcome crossroads today because thru them I have the power of choosing the direction I travel.

Today I am free, willing and unafraid to recall experiences that may create homesickness, pain or longing in me. I can go home again without living in the past. There are memories there that leave me warm inside and not depressed while I am conscious to the gifts of my life here in Atlanta. It felt good this morning revisiting and picturing the possibilities of adventure, rediscovery and bonding during a snowstorm up north. I also believe anything I mourn over was worth having in the first place. So that I do not end up back in my story or in the past negatively, I use an allotted time frame while I revisit if I feel sadness, loss or pain. This is another new perspective for me. I was taught that you can’t go home again and that the past should stay in the past.

The empowerment I feel from choosing my perspective comes from my commitments and risk taking as well as long-term involvement in the recovery world, professional coaching, quality friends, mentors, and consistently making the time to discover and utilize the tools for living and not just existing. For me, living is always having a choice. Everyone has choices in everything though only a few of us learn how powerful that is when creating the present and future. Today I choose to not only discover and pick up the tools but to apply my energies for living into an extraordinary life. This I do by action around my commitments and that I do for my legacy, my children and my children’s children.

That’s my script, and I’m sticking to it.

“If you’re going to write the script for your life, why not write a good one?”
How important is it to understand your perspective? You decide.

Extraordinary living is a birthright. Stake your claim.

Live Gloriously,
Elizabeth Tull

Look Up!

May 28th, 2008

“We will always tend to fulfill our own expectation of ourselves” - Brian Tracy

As we know, UP is a direction. More importantly, it is a direction that we want to go. The first step in moving UP is to set our sights beyond our current circumstances. Inherent in the definition of UP is that it never stops. There is always one more rung on the ladder, one more battle to fight, one more person to help, and one more analogy to make. So, wherever we are today, we have room to improve.

What’s holding us back? One of the main things keeping us from achieving more is that our expectations are set too low. When an expectation is set, our minds are so powerful and complex that our actions immediately begin to line up with that expectation. Robert K. Merton coined the phrase “self-fulfilling prophecy” to describe this phenomenon in his 1957 book Social Theory and Social Structure. Wikipedia defines a self-fulfilling prophecy as “a prediction that, in being made, actually causes itself to become true”.

In George Bernard Shaw’s play Pygmalion, Eliza Doolittle is transformed from a Cockney flower girl to a lady. What made the difference? The image that she had of herself changed when others treated her differently. Colonel Pickering called her “Miss Doolittle,” which Liza says began to teach her self-respect. She explained to Colonel Pickering, “The difference between a lady and a flower girl is not how she behaves, but how she’s treated. I shall always be a flower girl to Professor Higgins, because he always treated me as a flower girl, and always will, but I know I can be a lady to you because you always treat me as a lady, and always will.”

Most of us have observed the power of expectations with a familiar example. A co-worker mentions to us late in the day that they think that they’re coming down with a cold. We may respond with something like, “I’ve heard there’s something going around”. We could even say, “You look all right to me”. It really doesn’t matter what we say at that point as the person really expects to get sick. Sure enough, the next day, they call into work sounding just awful announcing that there is no possible way they could work today.

By now, it’s clear to me that we get what we expect. In the next part, we’ll look into who sets our expectations and how we can change them.

Bubble UP! is dedicated to helping us make better choices. Choices are the currency that converts the present to the future. We no longer have the luxury of managing our time as there will always be more things to do than time available. Instead, the information age is about managing our focus.

3 Steps to Manifesting Your Ideal Life

May 25th, 2008

Over the past several weeks I’ve received dozens of email
solicitations for books, CDs and videos that promise to reveal
newly discovered techniques to improve my life. These emails
promise a wide variety of benefits: how to get rich, lose
weight, meet the woman of my dreams and buy a million dollar
mansion with no money down. In some cases the salesman will
throw in a “Ginzu knife” or “pocket fisherman” if I order
immediately!

While some of these marketers may actually believe they’ve
invented a whole new system of creating a life anyone would
want, the truth is “there is nothing new under the sun.” Mystics
have studied the underlying principles that manifest reality for
centuries. These same principles existed in the time of Socrates
and they existed before the establishment of many of today’s
religions.

Whether it’s money, love, health, or anything else, the
principles are the same. In mystical terms, the Law of
Attraction specifies that you will attract to yourself those
experiences that match your beliefs. In the words of quantum
physics, the observer affects that which is observed. Since you
are the observer, it’s you who affects your life, that is, it’s
you who creates your experience of reality.

You create your experience via your underlying beliefs–whether
they are conscious or unconscious. If you’re not conscious of
your beliefs then you must make them conscious. As Carl Jung
said, “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct
your life and you will call it fate.” Or, as mystics will say,
“Know thyself.” This includes your beliefs.

Before you begin to manifest your ideal life, you must get clear
on exactly what you want. Examine your desire from a mystic
perspective. Is it something that would be of benefit to many
people or is it a purely selfish desire? If you are attempting
to manifest your desire at the expense of someone else, there
will be a steep price to pay in the future. Remember, “As ye
sow, so shall ye reap,” so why saddle yourself with additional
burdens? If your desire seems selfish, reframe it so that it’s
of benefit to others.

Once you are clear on exactly what you want, then it is a
straightforward matter to manifest your desire. There are three
steps:

Step 1. Visualize exactly what you want for 5 minutes per
day
. Let’s say you want to go sightseeing in Paris. You may
want to visualize the Eiffel Tower. Why 5 minutes? Because any
longer and your mind will wander. Any shorter and you may not be
fully fleshing out your vision.

Step 2. Put yourself in the picture, with detail and
emotion
. You have a clear view of the Eiffel Tower. But, if
you don’t visualize yourself in the picture, the universe will
manifest your desire, but perhaps not in the format you
anticipated. For example, you might get a postcard of the Paris
skyline in the mail. To avoid any misunderstandings, picture
yourself standing in front of the tower. What are you wearing?
Are you there with your spouse or some new love interest? Add
details, employing all your sensory data. You’re eating a
delicious croissant. The wind is blowing gently on a beautiful,
sunny spring afternoon. You hear conversations en francais and
you smell the perfume of the petite jeune fille standing near
you.

Don’t forget to add emotion. Are you enjoying the taste of your
croissant? Do you feel the joy of exploring a new country? Are
you reveling in the sense of freedom as you travel the world?
The more realistic you make it, the better.

Step 3. At this stage, focus only on the end result. This
is very important. Don’t worry about how you get there. You
can’t possibly imagine all the ways that your goal might
manifest, so don’t limit yourself to people you know or the most
obvious avenues to attain your goal. Let the universe worry
about the details.

When you are done with your meditation, release it to the
universe. Continuing to hold it in your mind will prevent its
manifestation. You have to let go. To ensure you’ve let go,
occupy yourself with a completely unrelated activity after you
complete your meditation.

You’re ready to go; but first, a brief note of caution. This is
an extremely powerful technique, so keep in mind the old adage,
“be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.” An
example, an acquaintance of mine was remarking on how lucky a
friend of hers was to receive a $100,000 settlement for a
personal injury she suffered. Within two weeks, my friend was
involved in a moderately serious auto accident that left her
with a bad back and a subsequent $50,000 settlement. Was it
worth it? I don’t think so.

To ensure that you don’t manifest something similar, I recommend
you close each meditation by saying, “If it pleases God, then so
be it,” or “If this is for my highest good, then so be it.” This
is an extra form of protection that will help you avoid needless
headache.

Lastly, don’t think that because you’re busy visualizing you
don’t have to take any action on the physical plane. For
example, if you’re looking for a boyfriend or girlfriend, you
can’t just sit inside and visualize your ideal mate, you still
need to get out. You must go about your business, but be alert
to opportunities that the universe is presenting to you.

The Law of Attraction is the basic underlying principle at work
here. If you’re not manifesting what you desire then there are
two possibilities: you aren’t clear on exactly what you want or
you’re not aware of a certain belief, probably unconscious, that
is contradicting your conscious desire.

Identifying your unconscious beliefs is a topic that we’ll cover
in our next newsletter.

Until then, manifest your dreams, the mystic’s way!

Why Even Bother With Time Management?

May 3rd, 2008

We’ve all felt this way: There’s always someone else who seems
completely in control and seems to manage every aspect of life
with such skill. You ask yourself “Why can’t I be like that?”
There were days when I would find myself late at night and have
absolutely no idea what I had done that day. Everything just
seemed like a blur and I went to bed feeling as though I had
accomplished nothing. The very concept of time management just
seems like another thing you don’t have time for, right? Why buy
another day planner to gather dust on a table or a PDA that has
no calendar entries and an endless to do list?

Inside your head you just keep screaming “no more,” but what is
the alternative? How can any of us really take control and feel
some sanity and sense of accomplishment in this information
driven world? Understanding how to manage your time is essential
in all business relations, school, home, and everyday life.
Having the right tools can make it easy in time management, but
having the right sense of empowerment and personal direction is
critical in order to create a balance in all of the aspects of
life which we must be able to manage in order to live a happy,
productive and meaningful life.

You have the same 24 hours in the day as everyone else. It’s
your time. It doesn’t belong to someone else so take possession
of it now. When we talk about time management, we’re not really
managing time. We’re managing ourselves. It’s not just about
learning when to say no. It’s about learning how to say yes to
the things that are important to you and give them the priority
they deserve. Instead of scrambling to prioritize your schedule,
you need to seize a new paradigm and schedule your priorities.
Not every bit of information in this book is going to fix the
exact needs of how you have chosen to live your life, but by
adding context and some approaches to the way you manage your
time you will find that you have enough hours in the day. You
will find the success that you deserve and the sense of well
being and peace of mind will be your biggest reward.

Time management is about self-mastery. The wind of time blows
the same on us all. It’s how we accept that wind and allow
ourselves to be moved by it that makes the difference between
those who sail past all others and those who are dead in the
water. Developing skills in time management is like learning how
to set the sail of life in a way that creates the outcome you
want, and by doing so you’ll always find the shores you seek.

Be Your Own Architect

April 17th, 2008

There is hardly anybody reading this that will not know who an
architect is. If you have built a house before or seen/know
anyone who has built one, you will not find it hard to
understand the work of an architect. As we all know, an
architect is a person that designs the plan of a house before it
is built. He sits down to take brief of his/her client and help
transfer the client’s brief into a workable plan.

If there is a job you need to be good at dear friend, it is the
job of an architect. I am not saying when you want to build your
own house; you should draw the plans yourself. No! What is at
stake is bigger and far from building house. There is a building
that we all need to be good at planning for and thereby
transferring our own brief into action. The planning for this
building is often neglected by not a few and it is what
determines what result we get. This building is our own life! We
must learn to draw a plan for our own lives.

I have an uncle who happens to be an architect and I used to be
fascinated at the amount of time and energy he devotes to
drawing a plan of a client’s house. At times, I hear him speak
out loud to no one in particular followed by a lot of
gesticulations. Unfortunately, majority of us do not put enough
time and energy into planning our lives like the professional
architects. It is saddening seeing people live their lives
without a plan. Most people who are living out a plan, are
unfortunately living out other people’s plans for their lives.
The greatest joy one can have is to live according to one’s
plan. Setting your plan and living it out brings an inner peace
you can describe and this cannot be experienced if you are
living without plans or living another person’s plan for your
life. Living other people’s plans for our lives always lead to
discomfiture and absolute frustration later in life.

When an architect is about to draw the plan of a house, he takes
so many things into consideration, which may mean little or
nothing to a lay man. Same goes for us. Nobody knows us better
than we know ourselves therefore nobody should know what is
better for us than ourselves. If I were to draw the plan of a
house, I will draw it according to how I wish it will be but an
architect will not make such a mistake. He will draw it
according to how it should be drawn putting into consideration
so many factors. If you are going to plan your own life, will
you put in things that will inconvenient you later in life? Will
you draw up a plan to do things that you know will not be of any
use to you?

If you decide to put the plan of your life in someone else’s
hand, then you are courting trouble in the future. Nobody knows
you more than you know yourself. I may just be seeing your
shining face but I don’t really know who or what you are inside.
I may not know your abilities and your weaknesses, so asking me
or anybody else to help design your life is going to be a
mistake that will surely lead to regret later in your life. You
know your potentials and your inner dreams more than anybody
else and you are the best person who can plan and design your
life and future.

When you design your life in line with your dreams and abilities
and things don’t seem to be working out according to the plan,
you can still alter the plan since the “original copy” is still
with you but if it somebody else’s plan you are living, changing
may not be that easy. If you are living other people’s dreams
and things don’t work out as planned, you will still take the
blame. So why don’t you assume the responsibility of becoming an
architect of your own life.

Nobody has the right to know how your life should be spent
except you; not your parents, so many parents have misled their
wards just by telling them they know what is good for them. Not
even your relatives, friends, boss or any other living creature.
If it is going to be, it is up to you. You have a choice to
design your life and live according to the plans or borrow
someone else’s. It is your choice! It is up to you and you
should know that it is the end that justifies the means.

PLEASE TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR LIFE!

Developing the Latent Image in You

April 2nd, 2008

Let’s us start by developing the latent image in you.

I developed pictures but now I develop people.

When you take a picture with silver based photo media (analog) the light changes the silver into a latent image. This image has all of the information within it but it needs to be developed.

To create a viewable image, it take’s special training and the exact time and temperature to develop the latent image
Only then can this image be seen and admired by others. The image can be used to give others a better understanding of what was always there in the silver base but could not be seen.
This is similar to what happens to people. When the information that is inside you needs to get out, it takes special training with a set of tried and tested formulas to develop you into the person that can be viewed and admired by others. Only then can you start to develop others because of what you went through.
This is what Coaching and Mentoring can do for you when you finally want to develop to your full potential. You need to find an expert that has the qualities that you want so you can accomplish your Dreams and Goals. That is a Mentoring Coach.

When you use a Mentoring Coach you can take years off your learning curve. Your Mentor has experiences that can help you avoid mistakes.

This alone is so valuable that it is hard to associate a price.
Mentors, allow you to develop your passions into a supercharged power-packed life and a life that is rocketing toward a tremendous abundance. A Mentor’s guidance will save you years of trying to do it alone and saved you thousands of dollars that you would have wasted without their help.

Every successful endeavor has a TEAM in back of it and the Mentoring TEAM is the best way to start.

Seven Strategies You Need to Know About Strengthening Your Self-Esteem

March 10th, 2008

Did you know that your life’s success in all areas is directly related to having a healthy self-esteem? You’ve heard the cliché “You are what you eat.” Many would also argue that “You are what you think.”

Nathaniel Brandon, one of the most notable psychologists on self-esteem put it nicely: “There is no value-judgment more important to manno factor more decisive in his psychological development & motivation than the estimate he passes on himself.”

It is the secret or “hidden self-esteem” in particular, that will get you through those very dark spots. It will enable you to find a valuable lesson each time you face an obstacle.

The hidden or secret self-esteem is how you feel about yourself deep down. It is the most accurate description of how you feel, regardless of what obstacles are thrown in your path.

If it’s strong, then you will be able to deal better with stress and your relationships. You’ll be successful by your own standards and have no need to boast about it. Your surface self- esteem, however, can vary widely depending on the day of the week. It’s a temporary feeling.

Environmental factors can play a role in how you view yourself.

It most certainly did for me. For example (the very short version), I felt essentially fatherless. I got called weird a lot growing up (and fat, too!).

Artists, musicians, and the mathematically inclined tend to be labeled as eccentric. I am all three! Teenagers generally ridiculed eccentricity in my environment back then.

Honestly, I don’t believe my secret nor surface self-esteem was as healthy as it could be in all areas until I was finished with schoolGraduate School!

So how did I get from there to here?

Let’s look at some strategies that I used and see if any or all them can get you on the road to developing or strengthening your self-esteem. Here are seven of them:

1. Clear out the junk: This means anything hurtful and unconstructive that you’ve been told by someone you care(d) about (or even some you didn’t) is to be taken with a grain of salt. It’s one thing to be given constructive criticism in life, but quite another when people are downright mean about it. Remember it’s the offending party’s issue. NOT yours.

2. Related to #1: List first why you believe the negativity you tell yourself (i.e., I’m too old. I’m too fat. Nobody loves me. I’m never good enough. etc.); laugh at that piece of paper you just wrote on; THEN tear it up and move on to the next strategy.

3. You may have heard the phrase “Attitude of gratitude.” Count your blessings, which can include things people actually take for granted, such as food and shelter, access to a computer, etc.

4. List your positive attributes and talentseverybody has them! List at least five.

5. Make a list of what you love to do, starting from childhood until now and try to find time to do it at least once a week, even if it’s just for a few minutes.

6. List at least three things that you would love to have the courage to do.

7. Surround yourself with positive people (think of volunteer or professional organizations that have something in common with your interests, for example).

If none of these strategies work over time, other factors may be at play that are beyond the scope of this article.

Consistently employing these strategies will make it easier to keep going even when the going gets tough. Especially when the going gets tough! Whenever you are feeling low, you don’t have to try and deny it. But do know that it will pass. Knowing that it will pass will help you psychologically.

If you’re interested in seeing where you fall in terms of your self-esteem, here is a site that I found very useful: http://www.wellnessnet.com/testesarticle.htm. It also goes into the hidden and surface self esteem concept in more depth.

Self-esteem is but one personal resource worth managing. It’s important to be kind to yourself and have patience. Remember, your best investment is in yourself!

How to Be Happy!

January 26th, 2008

How would you like to have at least an extra hour in your day just for yourself so that you can have more fun?

Well you can you know, you just have to do the following consistently and you’ll free up your time so that you can enjoy more of your life.

Look After Yourself First

Exercise regularly and eat healthily. Do the right thing by yourself and you’ll have heaps of energy, be motivated, more productive and happier.

Surround Yourself with Positivity

Circulate with positive people, read motivational books and listen to motivational tapes/cds while driving, commuting, waiting for appointments.

Avoid negative people like the plague. They will drain your energy

Clean out the Clutter

You will save yourself heaps of time, energy and money if you clear out your work and home environment…paperwork, books, old equipment etc. regularly. You’ll be able to find things, save money because you won’t have to buy what you already have hidden somewhere, plus you’ll be less stressed. You’ll feel better which will make you happier.

Jazz Up Your Environment

If you work and live in a pleasant environment, you’ll naturally feel better and happier. A clean, uncluttered home or workplace makes you feel good and happy to be there.

Dress for Success

When you look good, you feel good , when you feel good you are happier. Have an image makeover.

Plan Time For Fun

With so much to organise in your busy life you need to record your appointments, things to do and goals somewhere. Use a paper diary or digital organiser that you can take everywhere. This is the most effective way to get things done, plan your work and your life.

Learn to say “No”

To dramatically improve your productivity and do more of the things you want in your life, you have to be firm with others and let them know if you cannot, will not or are unavailable to fulfil their requests. If you constantly say “yes” to everyone else’s requests you will never have the time to do what you really want to.

Book yourself into a self-assertiveness course to learn these skills if you feel you need to.

Do What You Do Best and Delegate the Rest

At work see if there are ways you can delegate tasks which would suit someone else’s talents. Many office and home based workers are spending heaps of time on mundane secretarial tasks which would take a person who is trained in that area a quarter of the time to undertake.

At home hire a gardener and cleaner to take care of the basic household chores. It’s worth investing the extra dollars if you can have more free time to do what you want to.

Compliment Someone Every Day

How do you feel when you receive a compliment? Make someone’s day…give before you get because what goes around, comes around.

The Final Word

By following these simple yet very effective ideas you’ll feel good, look good and have more time to enjoy your life… and when you’re enjoying life, you’re happy!

Be Better at Business - And Lose Weight, Too!

January 15th, 2008

In business, individuals often secure the services of a success coach like myself to “fix” certain areas of their professional life. The desired fixes typically range from a desire for a promotion and/or a salary increase, to on-the-job performance enhancements, to improving one’s personal productivity, to boosting one’s level of enthusiasm about their job.

Having coached literally hundreds of executives on how to improve their professional life, I recently came to the realization that many of the issues and challenges faced by aspiring professionals are more similar than not to those of someone trying to lose weight in an effort to improve his or her health and wellness.

In short, both of these groups often seek someone or something that, with minimum effort, expense, and time, can get their situations fixed and on a desirable course for the long term.

Like many challenges faced by business people looking to enhance their career path, those with weight-related challenges may also be failing to realize that the weight problem is actually a symptom of other, more deep-seated problems that are occurring elsewhere in their lives. In other words, the obstacles overweight and obese people face may, in fact, not necessarily be food-related at all, just as problems at work may have very little to do with what’s actually occurring on the job.

In my practice, BusinessSuccessCoach.net, I use an holistic process to assess all of the elements required to affect our client’s success in business, rather than analyzing what is likely a mere symptom. This exclusive process, known as The Four Windows Method takes into account the whole of an individual — not just the obvious areas related to the problem at hand. Although created for use in a business context, The Four Windows Method is infinitely adaptable to those attempting to lose weight.

With The Four Windows Method, health seekers can work through a series of actions designed to provide a status review of their life using four distinct windows. Unlike other coaching methods that are tactical in nature, your final analysis, and the action plan derived from this assessment, will be strategic, holistic, and all encompassing.

When you move on to work toward weight-loss success, there will be No Walls to hold you back. This reasoned and methodical approach of The Four Windows Method will help you to understand where you are, what you want, and how to get there and you’ll be healthier, and happier, as a result.

“Losing weight rarely relates to simply implementing the ‘right diet’ or the ‘right workout’,” said Raphael Calzadilla, B.A., CPT, ACE and a Certified Personal Trainer. “From my extensive personal and professional health experience, I’ve learned that one must first understand the driving emotional and psychological forces in their life in order to make the required behavioral changes. McKee’s Four Windows Method is one such process. It can help health seekers get on the right emotional track, allowing them to more effectively work toward — and reach — their goal.”

About the Four Windows Method, Susan Burke MS, RD, LD/N, CDE noted, “It’s clear John McKee understands that weight loss encompasses much more than just food modification. His introspective Four Windows Method digs deeper in an attempt to uncover one’s true motivation for overeating, which has resulted in the ’symptom’ of an overweight or obese condition. McKee’s Method is designed to achieve permanent behavioral change to achieve and maintain a healthy weight for the long term and, as such, it’s an effort that I wholeheartedly endorse.” By applying The Four Windows Process to your weight loss effort, you will surely be well on track toward improved health and wellness.

Art, Artists and Vocation

January 13th, 2008

“If you really want to upset your parents…go into the
arts!”Kurt Vonnegut

How many times have people been told that “You can’t
make it as an artist.”

How many times when you’ve told someone that you are
studying theater, dance, the visual arts, do people look at
you and cringe; feel sorry for you, and feel that you and your
family have wasted a great deal of money, and that you have
wasted years of your life.

How often when you tell people that you are involved in the
arts, do people feel sorry for you because you won’t be able
to find a job or make it in the “real world”.

A vocation has been described as “something you can’t not
do.”

Frederich Buechner has defined vocation as “the place
where your deep gladness meets the world’s deep need.”

A very wise man, Harold Babcock, has this to say, “Vocation
is not simply about doing, but, at a much deeper level, it is
about being. It is about what Thomas Merton called “one’s
true self,” that self that one is really meant to be, and that no
one else can be.” Vocation is not always something we
choose, much as we might like to thinks so; rather, it is
often something which chooses us.”

An artistic vocation, sharing your beauty, depth, insight and
wisdom with the world, is both a gift and a responsibility.
People who have an artistic vocation often have having
different priorities than other people. It means that having a
fancy car, expensive house, designer clothes, is not as
important as doing “the thing you can’t not do.”

If you have a vocation as an artist, you are not different from
the world, but rather you have been given an extraordinary
gift, one that requires dedication, focus, courage,
perseverance and hard work. Art is not for the faint of heart.
