Google SEO is several things, it’s an art and it is a science. Search Engine Optimization is creative and it’s technical. It’s logical, parasitic and opportunistic.

The aim of Search Engine Optimization is to maximise targeted types of valuable traffic to a web site from search engines by improving the visibility of said website in Google organic or unpaid search engine results pages.

Traditionally, this has meant aiming for no1, or top ten positions in Google but SEO has evolved and now a SEO needs to be more of a marketer than just a tech geek. A seo wants to be involved, not simply with high positions in Google for relevant keyphrases, but with analysing competition, traffic and analytics, and changing traffic to leads and sales.

Measuring and improving the performance of a website

The return on investment (ROI) for the implementation of a
website is directly related to the level by which the website is
able to achieve its objectives. Even though this concept may
sound trivial to the majority of business owners, establishing a
series of objectives for a website and putting in place a
methodology for measuring how well these goals are being met
typically become more challenging tasks.

Traditional business managers and economic strategists have
always had at their disposal a variety of methods for measuring
and evaluating the degree of success of business objectives. For
example, an increase in productivity, cost reduction
initiatives, meeting certain sales goals, or the impact of an
advertising campaign are all objectives that can be methodically
measured and directly linked to a quantifiable level of success
within a specific timeframe. Then, as businesses successfully
accomplish their short-term goals, they are able to establish
and pursue mid or longer term initiatives.

When those same business managers and strategists that are used
to operating in traditional environments, and therefore are very
familiar with managing and classifying clients, calculating
penetration ratios, measuring profitability and forecasting
sales, are now faced with the new paradigm of a virtual
business, they seem to forget that most of what they already
know and do, including the use of common sense, is equally
applicable to an online economy. However, in many cases, it is
very difficult to see how a company’s website aligns with its
general business strategy and in extreme cases, a website’s only
purpose is to provide the company with a presence on the
Internet.

This reality is even more paradoxical if one looks at the fact
that the Internet, due to its technological foundation and
highly interactive nature, provides the ideal ground for quickly
testing new ideas, inexpensively measuring their results, and
effortlessly obtaining direct customer feedback to guide future
changes or improvements. Let’s therefore take a look at some
factors that will allow us to measure the performance of a
website in terms of its ROI, and also at some strategies
that our traditional business managers will have to establish to
guarantee that the same level of success that they are
accustomed to is also achieved in a virtual online economy.

1. A website must be fully aligned with the corporate
strategic objectives

The objectives for a website must closely follow the general
strategy for the company, as established by their executive
management. Therefore, when the term website is used, it should
not be interpreted as a piece of the company’s Information
Technology (IT) or computer systems. Instead, the term website
should trigger and be identified with concepts such as
Marketing, Sales, Human Resources, Customer Service, Product
Support, etc. In other words, if IT is the department
responsible for your company’s website you should have plenty of
reasons to worry.

2. A website must establish tactical objectives

After the general strategic planning has been completed for the
website, each department must then establish the objectives for
their own area of responsibility as an integral part of the
overall plan.

For example, a department responsible for customer support could
help alleviate the load of their customer-calling center by
adding to their website a section that contains frequently asked
questions (FAQs), or by simply implementing an e-mail based help
page where customers’ questions could be answered during
non-peak periods. As a matter of fact, many people would rather
fill out an e-mail form with their question than waiting on hold
for 25 minutes listening to the same melody or sales
message.

In the above example, the objective is clear: to reduce the
workload of our customer-calling center and improve customer
satisfaction. We should be able to measure the performance of
this objective by tracking the ratio between the number of calls
experienced by the call center and the number of customer
inquiries registered by the website.

As another example, the department responsible for buying
pre-owned properties in a real estate agency would like to
concentrate their efforts in purchasing those properties with
the highest customer demand. The objective of that department,
in this case, would be to optimize and adapt the agency’s
property portfolio to include those profiles with higher
customer appeal. This objective could be measured by calculating
the percentage of successful inquiries experienced by the
website’s property locator.

3. Identifying the Key Performance Indicators

Once each department has established their own tactical
objectives, a web-based methodology must be implemented to
measure the degree of improvement experienced. Although it might
be interesting to know the overall web traffic statistics of a
website (items such as unique visitors, pages visited,
referrers, etc.) it is pretty obvious that special attention
must be given to those visits that directly contribute to the
success of the established objectives (buying, asking for an
estimate, soliciting information, setting up an appointment,
etc.)

This concept is very easy to explain by analyzing the behavior
of visitors inside an online store. From all the visitors that
access the homepage of an online store, only a portion will use
the site’s product locator. Out of that group, only a few will
add products to their cart, and from those, only a percentage
will eventually complete the online payment process. The
relationship between the total number of visitors that accessed
our site and those that successfully completed a purchase can
provide our website’s client conversion ratio. It goes without
saying that the higher this ratio the better the performance of
the website will be. This ratio is therefore an excellent Key
Performance Indicator (KPI) for an online store.

But even if a website is not an online store, other KPIs, just
as easily identifiable and measurable, can still be defined to
evaluate the site’s objectives. For the customer-calling center
objective mentioned above, the percentage of visitors that
access the customer help page after having visited the FAQs
could be considered a KFP. In other words, the fewer inquiries
the help center page registers the better the FAQ page is
probably performing and the less work the customer-calling
center is therefore receiving. In the case of the real estate
agency objective, a good KPI could be defined as the percentage
of successful visits registered by the website’s property
locator. Other effective KPIs for that website could be defined
by measuring the number of visitors that access property
specification sheets, or by calculating the percentage of
visitors that eventually set up an appointment to tour a
property, for instance.

4. Measuring a website’s performance

The identification of Key Performance
Indicators allows us to implement two fundamental processes
that will improve a website’s performance:

- A “translation” of the website’s traffic statistical data
into concepts and values that can be easily recognized by the
individuals in charge of a department or area

- A “transformation” of that data into knowledge that will
allow a department head to make decisions and take actions.

Let’s look at each process separately. Web traffic statistics,
in general, contain technical information in a highly
specialized language, and they measure an endless set of
parameters, most of which lack any relevance to a department
business lead. That is why, typically, this information is only
accessed by IT professionals or webmasters, and even then, only
sporadically.

If, on the other hand, we were able to identify only those
pieces of information that are needed to calculate and measure
the KFPs that have been identified to appraise the performance
of a website, we would be “translating” the vast set of traffic
statistics into a language that department heads could easily
recognize and relate to. For example, someone in charge of a
customer service department would not see that
http://www.mydomain.com/customer/client_form.aspx has registered
23,547 hits. Instead, the information presented to that
individual would convey that the number of users that submitted
an inquiry to the customer help page has decreased by 10%.

By only serving to each department the data that is relevant to
calculate their own KPIs, the task of decentralizing a website’s
huge traffic statistical data and converting that information
into a series of executive summaries, customized for the each
department head, becomes a much simpler endeavor.

Implementing the translation process described above also
guarantees a higher degree of involvement on the part of those
responsible for each department. By providing familiar and
recognizable data, these individuals will be equipped with the
information necessary to “transform” the data received into
knowledge that they can use to propose changes or improvements.
This process will be most effective if the KFP changes are
monitored over short periods of time (e.g., every two to four
weeks.) It is in this manner that the executives will be able to
observe trends, anticipate changes and notice the effect of
recently implemented improvements. By providing this constant
feedback, these decision makers will be kept involved and
motivated, supporting a continuous improvement process.

5. Improving a website’s performance

Once the Key Performance Indicators have been identified, the
gauge for each KPI is thought of being reset to zero. From that
moment, each department is free to propose and develop
strategies that will improve the performance of their own area.
Since each department has a set of KPIs and a methodology to
consistently and continuously measure their performance, they
have the necessary tools to “test” new strategies and evaluate
their positive or negative effects almost immediately. At the
same time, this feedback will stimulate new decisions and/or
actions for implementing improvements in each area. Finally, the
changes measured by the KPIs will be excellent indicators for
determining the level of alignment between our website’s
objectives and the global strategy of the company.

Conclusion

The performance and ultimate success of a website is for the
most part based on the efforts of individual departments working
together towards a common set of corporate goals. It will be the
improvements made by those individual groups, in order to
achieve their own objectives that will drive the overall
increase in Internet performance. If we then establish a
relationship between the cost associated with each of the
proposed improvements and the return expected from them (for
example, in terms of a workload reduction, or an increase in the
customer conversion ratio) we will be able to not only measure
the ROI for our entire corporate website initiative, but also
collect the necessary data to justify future Internet
investments. After all, the World Wide Web is just one more
avenue for conducting business. An avenue, nonetheless, that
still requires us to establish objectives, measure their
achievement, and act when necessary to provide improvements. We
must also be aware that those same principles that we have so
heavily relied upon in a traditional economy still apply in this
new virtual business world.

Get Real Traffic to Your Site for Free!

Building a website can present itself as a challenge, but once it’s completed you need people to know about it. How does one go about getting a steady flow of online traffic? The article that you’re reading will explain what to do and give you the marketing edge!

1. The fastest way to get hits is to take part in what you’re seeing. Write articles. Writing articles will get you a lot of hits for your site. You can write about anything you’d like, really. The secret of getting it to work is to make your articles go hand-in-hand with what you have to offer. If you are a political genius, you could write political articles. If you’re a specialist in health care, you can write about the medications and technologies available to the health field. It’s wise to stick with what you know. You wouldn’t want to write about nuclear fission, if you’re not in that field of work.

Ezines will pick up your material if they like what they see. That’s more exposure for you. The more exposure you gain, the more hits your site will receive. Be sure to always invite the reader to visit your site. Give them a reason to. Don’t say, “Visit my site at “X” address.” It’s all about exposure, and to get that exposure you will have to promote yourself.

2. Submit to the search engines. Everyone would like to have a number one spot on Google or Yahoo. You’ll get there, but you’ll have to work for it. There are free sites that offer search engine submissions to the top search engines. http://www.addme.com will do this for free. You will have to register for a few things, but it will get you listed. It won’t cost you a dime.

3. Always try to link to others who are in the same category as you. If you’re an author, link to other authors. There’s no need to worry about competition. You’ll gain a lot of exposure by doing so. The search engines also use this in their spiders to discover your page ranking. If you have a thousand hits, your page ranking will grow. The higher page ranking you have, the more exposure you’ll receive. Do not join a link exchange farm on the internet. Google bans websites that take part in that. Link exchange farms exists to try to manipulate the search engines into including them. In reality, it only hurts your cause. If you get banned for joining one of them, there goes your search engine traffic. Link exchange farms will only harm you. I can’t stress that enough.

4. This is similar to mutual links, but have a few outgoing links on your site. You’ll get search engine points for having a few of them. If you have thirty links that are similar to yours that backlink to you, add three outgoing links that have nothing to do with what you’re doing. It would be best to have those outgoing links with a higher page ranking. You can do research on what sites have higher page rankings with such online tools, such as http://www.iwebtool.com

5. Just get out and promote your site with every chance you get. If you belong to any message boards, add your site in your signature. You may get a few hits by doing so. You’ll want to give them a reason to visit. Don’t spam and follow all rules that the administrators have in place.

It sounds simple, and it really is. It’s not that hard, it’s just learing how to get started. I hope that you have gained some knowledge on how to get that much needed web traffic to your site. There are other ways to gain traffic, but this is basically the crash course. When you get this down pat, you can branch out to traffic generators and the such. The only problem with those is that no one hardly stays long enough to visit your site. Most people only stay long enough to get points to build up their web traffic.

4 Steps To Prepare For Web Traffic

Most web site owners who say they want more traffic don’t realize they’re not ready for it and the more money they spend to get it, the more they’ll lose!

Is that you?

If you haven’t done the four things on this list, the traffic you bring to your web site won’t do you much good and the more you spend to get it, the more money you’ll waste.

Here’s the list:

1. SET UP TRACKING FOR EVERY STEP OF YOUR SALES PROCESS

You need to be able to test and improve the effectiveness of your landing page, your sales letter or home page and your “call to action” whether a sale or an opt-in to a newsletter. You can’t test what you don’t track.

When you split-test each step of your sales process, your web site is the worst it will ever be right now. Since you’ll always be testing against something new, you’ll only make changes to your headline, copy, offer or other aspects of your site if they beat what you have now.

2. DESIGN YOUR SITE TO CREATE A VISITOR ACTION

To get your visitors to take the action you want, you should consider a few things in it’s design that many businesses don’t. They are:

- Design your site so that a visitor knows what your site is all about in second. Have only one goal per page - multiple goals and many choices lead to inaction. If you have several goals, just use a different page for each.

- Use a headline that tells your customer what you can do for them (NEVER use your company name as a headline!)

- Have a “call-to-action” that asks them to do something. In most cases, you’ll do best by “selling” them on opting in to get something free instead of asking for the sale right away.

- Make sure to capture your visitor’s contact info so you can continue to market to them until they are ready to buy. Not everyone is ready to buy now and they may need to develop more trust in you before they buy. And, that’s not all…

Your web site should not be about you but tell your visitor what you can do for them. Answer these questions from your visitor’s point of view for every page: (1) why should I come to your site - what problem(s) will you solve for me? (2) why should I take whatever action you are asking for? (3) is there any reason I should ever come back?

It’s critical that you do NOT let your web designer make changes to your sales page for search engine optimization. Save that for other pages. Your sales page should be optimized to get your visitor to take the action you want, not for SEO.

3. OPTIMIZE YOUR CONVERSION RATE BEFORE YOU SPEND MONEY ON TRAFFIC

You can get visitors in an hour using pay-per-click with Google or Yahoo). Get your conversion rate from visitors to sales/opt-ins to a respectable level through testing before you spend a lot of money on traffic.

I’ve changed a headline on a Google ad for a client and had it increase the results by a factor of 10. Going through the testing process can make the difference whether you make money or not. Google provides the tools to track your pay-per-click campaigns and their new “Google Analytics” system lets you track everything you can think of - and, on top of that, it’s free. (It’s still in beta testing so type “Google Analytics” into Google to find the link.)

4. KNOW YOUR VISITOR VALUE

Before you pay for visitors with any substantial traffic generating program, you need to know what a visitor is worth. This is a combination of what your average sale or lead is worth divided by how many visitors it takes you to get a sale/opt-in. If your visitors are worth $1.00, it doesn’t make much sense to pay $3.00 to get one, does it?

Once you know that number, you will want to continually split-test and work to increase your visitor value.

Now that your site solves a problem(s) for your customers, is easy to navigate and you know what a visitor is worth, you can buy traffic because you’ll know which traffic sources are profitable and which are not.

DON’T BE MISLEAD

The Internet offers a wonderful opportunity to do scientific marketing. Since everything can be tracked, you can make marketing decisions based on hard facts instead of opinions.

If your webmaster doesn’t know how to do this, find one that does. The capability to improve your web results is readily available and is not expensive, so why not take advantage of it?

Most small businesses don’t even know about this, so use it to get an advantage over your competitors!

It does mine, and that makes me very happy! The money has been arriving in my bank account every night ever since I mastered the art of driving traffic to a web site that converts visitors into customers.

I will admit that for the first month or so it was a bit slow, but as I learned more and more, the money arrived more frequently.

For a long time I’d had the dream of running a business of my own on the Internet. A business I could run from home. But for many years the reality eluded me. I worked amazing hours but it made no difference. My web sites just did not work. I seemed like the harder I tried the less progress I made.

And then one day the pieces of the jig-saw just started to fall into place. It was like somebody was suddenly switching on the lights. Almost overnight I became more confident, convinced I was on the right track. And that was the beginning.

I added a single page to a web site and visitors started to show up. In the first month I got twice as many visitors on that single page as I had on the whole of a big web site which I’d been building and adding to for more than a year.

But the best bit was that these visitors were buying from me. Spending their hard-earned cash. And it was going into my bank account!

Ever since then the money has just kept on rolling in. It’s a really nice feeling going to look at your bank account in the morning and seeing more money has arrived overnight.

Once my confidence was up I found I was able to do some really cool things which made my site work better and better.

You know how it is when someone suggests that you try yet another software program; you sigh resignedly, bite the bullet and get the credit card out, again. And, when it arrives you are confronted with pages and pages of instruction, much of which is really difficult to understand because you don’t speak ‘tekkie’. Well, all of that stuff can be easily explained.

I’ve formed my own picture library so that now, when someone asks me “how the heck do you do that?” I can just say: “go to this Internet address and you’ll see this picture, click here and this will happen, click here and this will happen” and so on. With pictures it’s real easy to understand.

And when we get on to the more advanced stuff I’ve made video tutorials to make things even easier to understand.

Traffic . The lifeblood of an internet business .

What can any internet business dream off ? Sales of course .
But to have sales you need people . Not just people but people
who are interested in the product you are selling . Below are
listed the most effective techniques of generating traffic to
your website or sales page .

A little warning first . You would have come across
advertisements that you pay some dollars and the firm will
divert traffic to your website . If you sign up you will also
see a dramatic increase in your hit counter but rarely any sales
. This is because the traffic that is coming is not interested
in your products . You don’t want some 12 years coming to your
website seeking fun but potential customer and newsletter sign
up’s . Be careful before buying such services .

Here are the most effective traffic generating methods that
will keep adding to your bank account in yearss to come .

1 - Get a good search engine listing . This is where people
search for what “they are looking for” . They are interested in
the product or service they are searching and it can be really
rewarding to show up on the first page of search results in
Google , Yahoo and MSn .

You can hire a seo firm or do it yourself . If you choose to
hire someone then make sure they know what they are doing . If
you choose to do it yourself then make sure you have good place
to learn . Learning from people who are themselves novice can be
harmful .

It is although recommended that you Hire someone as you don’t
want to waste a lot of time learning something and then implying
it . Let someone who knows handle the job while you concentrate
on other methods and products .

Although if you have sufficient time , then learn it yourself
and imply the methods on all your websites .

2 - Write articles
that are closely related to your website content and add a
resource box at the bottom with your link in it like your name ,
company name , a little intro and a link .Now send these
articles to publishers and submit to articles hubs and article
sites.Search google for article submit and you should find many
article sites which publish articles. An example of a resource

you have in this box like I have done .

3 - Start a newsletter . The most important of the traffic
program . I repeat it is the most important of any promotion
methods you can do .

Once you have a large newsletter you can simply send an email
and get many people ( subscribers) coming to your website to see
your offer . People even have 150,000 readers of their
newsletters.Just imagine that many people reading your offer
with all the interest you want .

It’s not that easy although . Requires time,patience and a real
good skill to make people read your newsletter . It takes only a
click to delete an email.

People charge to write newsletter emails so the email gets read
and acted upon . The intention is that people open the email and
read it and click the link you have provided in it to your
affiliate product or your own product .

4 - Email signature. Add a small line of your website intro in
your email signature .So next time you send an email , your
website ad goes along . My firm “also” designs websites and I
often come across poorly designed websites . I then send an
email to the owners suggesting them the changes that they can
make to have a better website and I also tell them they should
contact “their webmaster” .People contact me instead . I never
said that I can make the changes or this is the cost of doing
these changes but the signature line speaks for itself . Do it
with your emails also . Good work gets you references and more
business .

Don’t send spam emails . I actually visit the websites and send
email only if I see something that can be improved .

5 - Banner exchanges. I am not very sure of the results that
this method gets but as said something is better than nothing .
If you are not doing anything else then try this method .
Exchange banner ads with other sites that are related to yours
.Like if you are a website designer you can exchange ads with
graphics designers.

6 - Place advertisements on pay per click . This is where you
PAY when someone CLICKS your ad . Two places which have very
good exposure are :

-Google adsense

-Yahoo publisher network (YPN)

You can bid on a search term and websites with related content
shows your ad . Example if you bid on “search engine
optimisation” then Search engine optimisation related websites
which are displaying ads with these programs can show your ad
automatically . Start with a small investment and if you see the
benefit then continue with more budget . Have a good tightly
targetted landing page here .

7 - Advertise on other high traffic websites . Get ready to
have a nice budget if you plan on this .

You can also run an advertisement in someone’s newsletter . You
must although first make sure how many readers they have and the
quality of the newsletter .

You advertised and people deleted the email . What good is that

8 - Affiliate program . This is where other people promote your
products for a commission you have fixed . They get a portion of
money from each sale generated from their lead .

9 - Offline advertising . Advertise in newspapers and magazines
with your complete URL displayed in the ad .

customers finding you . Be there a lot and you have a lot of

There are lots of ways to get traffic to your
website however most people are interested in getting
the most traffic for the least amount of money,
preferably for free.

While it’s difficult to get anything for free nowadays
there are still a few good ways to help build your web
traffic and still pay nothing.

1. Build a second content-rich website.

Because content is king on the internet many have
adopted the idea of building a content-rich site in
addition to their original sales site.

If you set up your title, description and keyword
tags carefully and find a good balance for your keyword
saturation, you may be better able to achieve high search
engine rankings with a site that contains only good content
and information.

Once you have built your content-rich site you can then use
the content to point your viewers to your sales site.

2. Add an article page to your existing site.

By adding article pages to your web site you can
once again point your readers to your sales page.

For example, let’s say you have a website that sells
vitamins. Set up a few article pages that reference
vitamins such as a page on the benefits of vitamins,
how to take vitamins, the effects of vitamins, etc.
Allow each of the articles to reference links to your
sales page.

This can be a very effective sales tactic because you’ve
attracted the attention of someone interested in your
topic. If they read your article and like what they’ve
read they’re more apt to check out your links and you’ve
increased your chances of making a sale.

Also, with proper meta tags and keyword usage, an article
page is much more likely to make it to the top of a search
engine listing than a sales page.

3. Submit your articles

Any articles that you write should be submitted to as
many sites that accept articles as possible. This is
important because sites that accept and include your
articles in their article banks establish links for
you and you are not obligated to reciprocate.

4. Build your links through reciprocal linking

By establishing reciprocal links you are verifying to the
search engines that you have credibility. If high ranking
sites link to your site then the search engines
will find you worthy of high ranking as well.

Find sites that rank well and request a link exchange.
This can be done manually or you can purchase linking
programs that will automate this for you. Either way
spend a few weeks focusing on creating quality links
and you will soon see your link ratings go up as well.

5. Join and participate in online forums.

The internet is full of discussion forums that cover
hundreds of business and non-business topics.

Find a forum in your topic and look over the discussions.
Ask questions, contribute your expertise and get to
know some of the forum members. This is an excellent
opportunity for you to meet others and introduct your
website. It also helps build trust while helping you
learn how others have found success.
