Home alarm system

May 4th, 2008

Another excellent reason for getting a home alarm system is to get help faster in case of a fire. There are home alarm systems with a fire alarm. When this fire alarm is tripped, the local fire department is called automatically. Many fires which destroy homes start when no one is home. If there is no one home there is no one to call the fire department, usually until it is too late. Many fires which take the lives of family members happen at night when everyone is sleeping. With a home alarm system, the fire department can be notified even before anyone is woken by the fire, saving the lives of family members and pets.

Many home alarm systems today can detect a deadly problem which is not able to be seen or heard. Homeowners may not even know it is a problem in their home because it causes damage silently. It is called carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is created when gas, propane, or even coals are burned. When this gas is leaking in your home, you will not see it or smell it. Family members who are awake will begin to get a headache and possibly nauseous. This is an alert that something is wrong. If the family is sleeping and the carbon monoxide begins leaking, they may never wake up. Carbon monoxide poisoning kills hundreds of people each year. A home alarm system will alert the family when there is a carbon monoxide leak. This can save the lives you the entire family.

Remodeling

April 27th, 2008

Remodeling your house can turn out to be an expensive affair. Before embarking on remodeling of your house, it is better to know the returns on your remodeling would be. Would it be cheaper for instance, to build a new house than to undertake the remodeling of an existing one? Also what is the resale value of the house after the remodeling is done.

The returns on your remodeling investment will depend upon a number of factors. It depends on the scale of the remodeling that you are getting done among other important factors. For example if you are just getting your house painted then the returns will definitely not be very high. But if you are remodeling you r house in the scale of a house extension, then the returns may be positive or negative.

Other very important factors that will contribute to the high return of your remodeling investment are the market prices of the houses in your area. If the house does not fit with the other houses after remodeling in the neighborhood then the resale value won’t be too high.

The resale vale of your house after remodeling, as mentioned before, depends upon the market value of your neighborhood. This in turn depends upon various factors such as, access to commercial places, highways, markets, schools, grocery stores, the proximity to which make the returns on the remodeling investment high.

Cordless Impact Wrench - Not the same tool as your cordless drill.

April 22nd, 2008

The cordless impact wrench
is quickly gaining in popularity among professional mechanics
and the hobby mechanic as well. You may be thinking “I already
have a cordless drill that I use for impact applications, why do
I need a cordless impact wrench as well?”. I thought the same
thing. The first difference is on the inside. A cordless drill
creates continuous in-line torque. A cordless impact wrench
employs an internal spring-loaded pulsating cam to create
rotational torque. This creates the “impact” force that loosens
a nut. It is the equivalent to banging a wrench with a hammer to
loosen a rusty nut only a lot faster. Unlike a cordless drill -
which creates continuous in-line torque, a cordless impact
driver uses an internal spring-loaded pulsating cam and gear
mechanism to create rotational torque or the “impact” force.
Another big difference, is the lack of reactionary torque.
Reactionary torque is what you experience with your cordless
drill. You have to use brute force to keep your drill from
spinning the opposite direction in your hand. With a cordless
impact wrench, that torque is directed to the nut not your arm.
You can easily hold this tool in one hand and let the cordless
impact do all the work. No more pushing down on the tool to
drive that screw. These tools are also smaller and lighter than
a cordless drill. For example a DeWalt cordless impact wrench is
about 35% the size of its comparable cordless drill. This
feature makes them perfect for those overhead projects and
reaching into hard to get to spaces.

The next time your start that big deck project in the backyard,
leave the cordless drill in the box and grab your cordless
impact wrench. Your arm will thank you at the end of the day.

Painting the Ceiling

April 17th, 2008

Our ceilings never get much more than an upward glance until the
abuse of a smoking fireplace and a few old roof leaks takes it’s
toll on that once bright space above our heads. Now it is time
for that long overdue task.. Painting the ceiling.

Here is a list of things that you will need to do the job:

Step ladder. 5 Gal. bucket. Paint screen / grid. Nine inch
roller frame. 1/2 inch nap roller cover. Roller extension pole.
Three inch nylon/polyester brush. Plastic sheeting. Drop cloths
or old bed sheets. Primer/sealer. Ceiling paint.

Preparing the room.

Move all the furniture toward the middle of the room, leave at
least enough room between large pieces and the wall to
accommodate a step ladder. place smaller pieces in several
groups leaving aisles between them. This will allow for easier
access to the ceiling when you start painting. Cover the
furniture with plastic, thin 1/2 mil plastic works best. Place
drop cloths or old bed sheets on the floor around the groups of
furniture.

Spot prime any brown water stains with a stain killing primer.
These primer/sealers are available at any paint or hardware
store. Some brands offer a convenient spray can with an upward
spraying nozzle.

Set up and paint.

Now that everything is wrapped up and spot primed you can
prepare to paint. Pour the ceiling paint into the five gal.
bucket leaving about a quart of paint in one can to use with the
brush. Brush a three or four inch line around the edges of the
ceiling being careful not to paint too low on the wall or crown
molding, don’t forget to brush around the light fixture.

Ready and roll.

Hang the paint screen on the inside rim of the 5 gal. bucket.
Install the roller cover on the frame and attach the roller
frame to an extension pole or screw in mop handle. Load the
roller by daubing it into the 5 gal. bucket of paint, remove any
excess paint with a few strokes on the paint screen. Roll out a
big W pattern on the ceiling starting the roller in a corner and
about a foot from the wall. Reload the roller and fill in the
pattern from the outer edge working toward the wall, be sure to
roll into the brushed paint line at the wall. Roll out and fill
another W pattern next to the one you just completed and
slightly overlap the previously painted section. Repeat this
technique until you have covered the entire ceiling.

Once finished the room will be noticeably brighter and that
upward glance may turn into a smile.

Hurricane Shutters

April 8th, 2008

Hurricane Shutters are something very serious these days, if you read the news recently you probably know that the world climate is changing, as a result we are expecting more tropical storms in our region in the next few years, and the forecast for the hurricane shutters is that its going to be a much needed tool to protect your home.

A hurricane shutter is most common in the Southern states that often see bad weather a couple of months during the year. If you do not have these, you will risk a lot of damage to your house. Today more and more people are looking into buying hurricane shutters as a result of the last year storms and because some insurance companies has started recommending the use of hurricane shutters.

Hurricane or “storm panel” shutters are often constructed out of a solid steel or aluminum frame and provide protection superior to that of Bahamas, Colonial, wooden, or vinyl shutters. This shutter is also considerably less expensive than decorative shutters. You should think about the exterior of your house because those shutters are considerably less attractive-and you may want to put them in storage at the end of the hurricane season.

The reason that these shutters look less attractive should not deter you from considering them for protection of your home, although these hurricane shutters do not look so nice they can protect your windows, balcony, or storefront from bad weather. During a storm, these areas may be pounded with heavy rain, hail, and wind. If you have a hurricane shutter in place, you do not have to worry about a lot of damage. The great thing about the hurricane shutters is that they also give you some peace of mind while a storm is raging outside. The hurricane shutters can also help to protect the people inside of your house, and help to protect a little more then material positions. A hurricane shutter will go a long way in ensuring that your windows do not get busted out by bad weather.

Most hurricane shutters are designed for the use and maintenance of one person up and down operation. One person can operate the hurricane shutters and do it relatively fast so that the chances that you will not be prepared when a storm is on its way it relatively low. A great advantage if a storm sneaks up on you by surprise. This way, all you have to do is pull this shutter down and lock it into position; a simple five second job. While everyone else is boarding up their windows in the rain, you will be inside your house, protected from the elements.

The advice of most hurricane shutters companies is to set them up when the hurricane season starts and to take them off for the rest of the year, thus avoiding their looks and enjoying the protection the shutters offer. This is not a joke, and a lot of people use this advice, it makes sense that you want to keep your property protected when its hurricane season and once the danger is off to return to your “normal” look.

Laminate Flooring Advantages

April 6th, 2008

Durability

Because it’s designed with a tough and durable wear layer,
laminate flooring is much stronger than most installed solid
hardwood flooring, carpets and vinyls, it’s more resistant to
scratches than softer surfaces (solid hardwood floors for eg.)
and is one of the best choices for households with heavy foot
traffic, kids, or pets. But, best of all, laminates will look
like new for years.

Resistance

Laminates are highly resistant to stains, fading and moisture
and many laminate flooring manufacturers offer warranty
protection against them for a long period of time (usually from
10 to 25 years).

Ease of installation

The top brands of laminate flooring have developed a glueless
floating floor installation process. They just need to be cut,
clicked together and are ready for walking or even placing heavy
things, like furniture, on them. Most professional installers
could do it in a couple of days, but expect to take longer if
you want to do it yourself.

Easy cleaning and maintenance

To clean up spills and messes, just use a little soap and water
and your laminate floors will look brand new.

Healthy flooring

Laminate flooring provides a much cleaner and healthier living
environment when compared to other floorings such as carpets,
with regular cleaning cycles. It accumulates less dust, pet
dander, allergens and it doesn’t hold residual stain
contaminants on the surface. Allergic people will often be
recommended to remove the carpets from the living space.

Economical

A typical laminate flooring is and extremely economical
solution, if you take in consideration the costs of alternate
flooring solutions. Solid hardwood floors will require 4-5
refinishings and carpets and vinyls will need to be replaced at
least twice (depending on traffic loads), while laminates don’t
require anything.

In conclusion, kids playing with their toys on the floor, the
dog running through with dirty paws, friends walking with wet
shoes on it, or baby bottle spills all over it won’t be a
problem with laminate flooring. They are the perfect floor for
busy families and growing households.

Hand Hooked Rugs

March 21st, 2008

Hand hooked rugs are a great way to add splendor to a bedroom, a kitchen, sun porch, or children’s room. A number of designers like Jane Keltner, Suzanne Nicoll, Sally Dailey, Dena, and Tracy Porter focus exclusively on designing hand hooked rugs. These beautiful floral, animal, fruit and other pattern hand hooked rugs can be used interchangeably from room to room. Hand hooked rugs have warm colors that harmonize a variety of décor themes like shabby chic, cottage, nautical or even country.

The hooked rug is described as having originated in rural New England during the late 18th Century and had taken root in Colonial America. It attained immense popularity and is still today recognized as essential home accessory. Traditional hooking uses a hand hook similar in shape to a crochet hook to form a looped pile from fabric strips or yarn on an even-weave base (such as burlap, monks-cloth, divider cloth, or linen).

Early patterns were borrowed from quilts and often immortalized a friendly horse or house pet. Gay sprays of flowers and scenes were also drawn. These designs were bold and nave. A home was very personalized in this way, especially when it came to pattern and color. In recent times hand hooked rugs come in both classic and contemporary designs, including traditional, floral patterns, and theme rugs. Intricate designs and a myriad of colors add a lively, rich look.

The ingenuity and resourcefulness of the early American craftswoman continues today with manufacturers emphasizing both quality and aesthetic component. Today, rug hookers choose primarily from three steadfast fibers: linen, burlap or jute, and cotton; this tried-and-true selection of backings that have withstood the test of time. The cotton and linen backing makes rugs expedient for kitchen and bathrooms where there is greater use of water and humidity. Further more, hand hooked rugs are lightweight and machine washable adding to their functionality. The floral bouquet, flower garlands and other motifs add romance and warmth to any space. The bright hues of red, yellow and blue spice any area that has monotonous colors.

Round hand hooked rugs come in an array of colors, designs and styles. This shape is ideal to be placed under a round dining table while supplying color and dramatic liveliness to the dining area

Tracy Porter’s hand hooked rugs have been featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show, HGTV, and E!, as well as in People, O, and Victoria magazines. These colorful, hand-touched, livable hand hooked rug designs are created with the signature Tracy Porter palette. They are a work of art in a color and design combination to meet one’s specific decorating needs. The floral and fruit motifs, checks and diagonal pattern help create a cozy country look. The soothing shades give the bathroom a seaside spirit, making it a tranquil place in which to refresh and renew.

In the past the potential use of hand hooked rugs were understated and restricted in use. Today, hand hooked rugs are moving from the kitchen and bathroom to conspicuous spaces like the bedroom and living room. A hand hooked rug can add the note of authenticity a room needs to take on a character all its own. The wonderful art quality of hooked rugs endears them to all who encounter them. If you are searching for the perfect hand hooked rug look no further. Visit Exquisite Rugs to find a rug that meets your specific requirement.

Clogged Dryer Vent Hose Can Be Dangerous.

March 11th, 2008

Your drier vent hose is often over looked but it will save energy and reduce a fire hazard.

We had a scary situation in the house that we just purchased. After about a month
our drier stopped working. After some testing I figured out that it was the motor.
So, off to buy a new drier. When the new one was installed it ran hot, very hot. Upon
further inspection I decided that it might be the drier vent.

I crawled into a space that is too small for me and discovered that the drier vent
extended 20 feet to the side of the house. I pulled the end of the vent that is closest
to the drier and it was full of lint. So I pulled the entire thing. The morons that lived
here before us had attached two pieces together and attached then with screws. Yes
they screwed screws into the vent. So the screw extended about an inch into the
vent, on all 4 sides. Can you say lint trap? Can you say fire hazard? I replaced the
entire vent pipe and it is working fine. I have not decided if I am scared or just mad.
I think just scared.

Be sure to check your dryer vent, for so many reasons. It will save energy, because
your dryer will not have to work as hard. It will also keep your clothes from being
over adjetated and they will last longer. It will prevent a fire, the dryer is designed to
create great amounts of heat to disipate moisture from the clothes. some of that
heat is sent out the dryer vent. It creates forced air that heat past lint that has be
exposed to moisture and heat and cooling numerous times so it breaks the lint
down to be very flamable. Watch out, protect yourself!

Popular Trends in Home Technology

February 25th, 2008

As a former home automation installer and a former manufactures rep, I have
observed many trends. The following items are certainly the hotest trends this year
in home technology.

VoIP (pronounced Voice over IP) refers to making telephone calls using
your high-speed internet connection. This technology is gaining ground very fast,
as new users are discovering it is 50-75% cheaper the comparable standard
telephone service and congress is standing behind the technology for now, no
taxes or legislation to mess it up - yet… The a catch? Several more variables in
losing your dial tone: Power outages, internet downtime, and equipment failures
are just a few problems you may encounter using VoIP. Also, If you are dropping
the standard phone line, and you have a security system you will need a cellular or
radio back up for safety reasons.

Retrofit home theaters. With the cost of movie tickets approaching $10, it
makes it quite expensive for families to enjoy movies and snacks at the theater.
There are new techniques and processes to install a home theater in your existing
home. Many of the processes are for noise reduction, so you don’t have harmonic
vibrations in the home, or annoy your neighbors. Living in a townhouse, row house,
or other multiplex homes, you can now “pump up the volume” with bothering
others!

Security Cameras. Many cities now require visual verification prior to
dispatching emergency services. Approximately 9 out of 10 alarms are false.
Cameras in the home can quickly verify that the alarm is actually triggered by a
burglary. In addition, many new parents are now installing cameras to check in on
their children while they are away to ensure safety.

Home Offices. Today more and more people telecommute. The reasons
may very but the fact is home offices are now becoming a necessity for many
homeowners. Proper planning can provide you with all the technology you need in
either a new home or a remodel. If you are ready to start thinking about your
custom workspace, keep the following in mind: your personal work style; essential
services such as Internet & telephone; and office needs such as printing, wireless
networks, file storage and audio distribution.

Lighting Controls. Reliable lighting control used to be reserved for the
wealthy. The rest of us were reduced to live without lighting control or the
unreliable X-10 technology. In the last few years two new technologies arose. UPB
(Universal power line bus) and RF (Z-Wave). These new products have provided us
with more selection, more reliability, and the best partthey cost about the same
as the major branded X-10 products.

Energy Savings. Recent energy cost have us all looking for ways to
reduce the utilities budget in the home. Home Automation is stepping up to the
plate. Home automation can manage the thermostat (typically the largest load in
the home) based on actual occupancy rather than when you think you will be home.
Lighting is the second largest load, home automation will turn off the extra lights
when they are not needed. Using motion sensing, occupancy sensing, and other
types of lighting controls, home automation can shut the lights off behind you!
