Massage Therapy for Senior Citizens

February 2nd, 2008

Massage therapy can offer senior citizens a number of benefits that will greatly improve their sense of health and wellbeing. As the population continues to age, it is important to consider ways that we can work to improve the lives of those affected by the passing of time. A number of studies have shown that massage therapy can have a direct impact in managing the effects of aging. It has also shown promise in bringing comfort to those suffering from arthritis and other physical ailments.

As people age, they naturally become less active. This lack of physical activity can lead to the onset of other conditions which, if not dealt with, can greatly reduce their quality of life. The National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) has been promoting the use of massage therapy for some time now. According to a recent study, there is a general awareness of massage therapy but a lack of understanding of its direct benefits.

In the case of senior citizens, there are a number of benefits that be derived from therapeutic massage. According to the Touch Research Institute, it is extremely useful in the treatment of Alzheimer’s patients, as it can facilitate relaxation and communication. In the case of arthritis sufferers, it can greatly assist in pain management and help increase range of motion. It also triggers natural joint lubrication, which is extremely important for those suffering from arthritis.

Massage therapy has also shown promise by helping to increase strength and muscle coordination. It can also greatly improve one’s posture by reducing muscle tension, which has the added benefit of assisting seniors with a higher quality of rest. Massage has also been known to boost one’s natural energy levels, along with their mental awareness. Study after study has shown that there is a place for massage therapy within the health care community.

More and more people are becoming aware of the benefits of massage therapy. In an age where the common approach to pain management has been dominated by the interests of the pharmaceutical industry, massage therapy has shown to be an effective and natural solution to the ailments associated with process of aging. If you or a loved one are interested in learning more about the benefits of therapeutic massage, please visit the website mentioned below.

Seven Toxic Effects of Drug Companies

January 5th, 2008

I’m the first to admire the strengths and virtues of the free-enterprise model as it applies to drug development and sales. This model encourages drug companies to employ talented people and to take risks in developing new drugs for serious medical problems. But let’s face it, current practices also produce undesirable effects.

1. When their drug that was wonderful last month is suddenly no good.

It’s been entertaining to watch the drug companies suddenly come up with new, patentable variations of their drugs just when their old patents are expiring. For example, since the 1970s, the Abbott company has been doing a dance with different formulations of valproic acid (used for seizures, migraines and bipolar disorder). At first, the brand name was Depakene, but when that patent ran out, Depakene was suddenly no good any more, and Depakote (just barely different enough to be patentable) was the only drug one should think of. Then when Depakote’s patent ran out, suddenly it wasn’t any good, either. Now Depakote ER (extended release) is the only way to fly.

This approach of reworking the old drug into longer-acting formats has worked for other drug companies, too. For example, GlaxoSmithKline has gone through the same dance with their formulations of bupropion for depression, evolving from Wellbutrin to Wellbutrin SR (sustained release) to Wellbutrin XL (extended release). Wyeth, seeing a good thing, followed the same path with venlafaxine antidepressant, going from Effexor to Effexor XR (extended release). It’s just an amazing coincidence how these new, suddenly-better drugs emerge just when the old drugs expire and face generic competition.

2. When they make us forget that the older drugs work just fine.

Since 1954 we’ve had effective anti-psychotic drugs to treat schizophrenia, but beginning in the 1990s a series of new anti-psychotics emerged, now called the “atypical” or “novel” anti-psychotics. Suddenly, the older drugs — all generic and therefore reasonably priced — were no good. Only the new, patented anti-psychotics were any good and one might even be guilty of malpractice if one prescribed an older drug (or continued prescribing one to a patient who seemed to be doing fine). Indeed, a generation of new psychiatrists cycled through training programs with this concept in mind, rarely writing a prescription for an older drug.

The alleged superiority of the newer drugs was tested in the recently completed CATIE (Clinical Antipsychotic Trials in Intervention Effectiveness) study and found to be absent. The study compared four newer drugs to an older drug, perphenazine, and the differences in outcome were minimal to none.

3. When they draw attention away from non-medication treatments.

Drug companies sell drugs. Therefore, when it comes to marketing their products, they have no interest in promoting — or even mentioning — non-drug treatments. There are no salespeople making the rounds of doctors’ offices to remind physicians of the rigorously proved benefits of stress management training for migraine and tension-type headaches, or of cognitive-behavioral counseling for depression.

4. When they hook us on samples.

Doctors’ offices receive samples of patented (high mark-up) drugs and not of unpatented (low mark-up) drugs. Therefore, patients are steered toward the expensive drugs by means of these “loss-leaders.”

5. When they shape medical practice.

Drug companies aggressively court the thought-leaders, like faculty members at medical schools, with financial perks such as impressive fees for speaking engagements. They also subsidize medical publications. The effects of these marketing activities on medical practice are not necessarily beneficial to patients.

For example, tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) is an expensive clot-dissolving drug approved for use in stroke patients. Its benefits are modest and its risks are real (brain hemorrhage and death). Thoughtful clinicians might reasonably conclude that the benefits of administering tPA do not outweigh the risks. But this is not the message that comes from many thought-leaders and publications. Instead, the implication is that administering this drug is a standard of care, and omitting it constitutes malpractice.

6. When the sales reps push unapproved uses.

Recently, a Pfizer sales rep told me that his company’s drug, pregabalin, is effective in preventing migraine. He shouldn’t have said that. Pregabalin is FDA-approved for treatment of epilepsy and nerve-pain, but not migraine. Although physicians in the U.S. are allowed to prescribe drugs for “off-label” uses, drug companies are prohibited from advertising their drugs for non-approved uses. In fact, Pfizer got in trouble for pushing another drug, gabapentin, for unapproved uses.

7. When doctors don’t think critically about what they’re doing.

This, strictly speaking, isn’t a deficiency of the drug companies. But because the only salespeople that doctors see are for expensive, branded drugs, the names of less expensive (or more effective) alternatives may not come to mind when prescriptions are written.

What is the South Beach Diet?

December 11th, 2007

Copyright 2005 Adam Waxler

The South Beach Diet was developed by cardiologist Arthur
Agatston to help his patients lose weight and maintain a healthy
diet for a lifetime. The South Beach Diet is designed in phases,
like the Atkins Diet, with different eating recommendations in
each phase of the diet.

All phases of the South Beach Diet have the same underlying
philosophy, though…weight loss and maintenance depends on
establishing a balanced diet that avoids ‘bad’ fats and
carbohydrates.

The proponents of the South Beach diet claim that you can lose
weight and maintain the weight loss without counting calories,
weighing portions or depriving yourself of good-tasting,
satisfying foods. This is accomplished by cutting out empty,
high-carbohydrate foods like sugars, potatoes, rice and white
bread. Each phase of the diet is specially designed to
accomplish a particular goal.

Phase I of the South Beach Diet: Adjusting your Metabolism

In Phase I of the diet, you eat three meals and two snacks
daily, eating until you are no longer hungry. Phase I of the
South Beach Diet lasts two weeks, during which time your body
will shed 8-13 pounds. These items are not allowed during
Phase I of the South Beach Diet: bread, rice, potatoes, pasta,
baked goods, fruit, candy, cake, cookies, ice cream, sugar or
alcohol

Phase II of the South Beach Diet: Weight Loss

The aim during Phase II of the South Beach Diet is to lose
weight, with weight loss averaging 1-2 pounds per week. During
this phase of the diet, you will gradually add the restricted
foods from Phase I back into your diet, but you will eat less of
them. The daily diet on Phase II should consist of:

All the protein you want Minimum of 4 1/2 cups of vegetables Up
to 3 servings of fruit Up to 3 portions of starch 1 1/2 cups of
milk/dairy (including yogurt) 3 tbs. fat

In real terms, a typical menu for a meal on the South Beach Diet
might include something like this: grapefruit 2 scrambled
eggs mixed with Monterey Jack cheese and salsa 1 slice of whole
grain toast Decaffeinated coffee or tea, fat-free milk and sugar
substitute if desired

The eating plan recommended by the South Beach Diet emphasizes
low carbohydrate foods, restriction of sweets, processed
starches, white sugar and ‘unhealthy fats’, and all the protein
you want. It specifies minimum amounts of low carb vegetables to
be eaten daily that are remarkably close to the recommendations
made by the USDA and the American Diabetes Association.

A key concept in the South Beach diet is the Glycemic Index.
Foods are ranked on a scale of 1-100 according to their Glycemic
index - the amount by which they raise blood sugar levels after
meals. The focus of your diet should be on foods low on the GI
level, such as yogurt, cucumbers and broccoli and whole grain
cereal, while avoiding those high on the GI scale such as white
bread, potatoes and pretzels.

In addition to the above, the South Beach Diet offers the
following guidelines:

* Drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water and other decaffeinated
beverages per day (excluding fruit juices) * Limit your intake
of caffeine-containing beverages to 1 cup each day * Take one
multivitamin and mineral supplement daily * Take between 500 and
1,000 mg of calcium daily

Phase III of the South Beach Diet: Lifetime Maintenance

The lifetime maintenance phase of the South Beach Diet is nearly
identical to the weight loss phase of the diet, with more
portions of foods allowed.

Dr. Agatston cautions that patients being treated for diabetes,
impaired kidney function, pregnancy or other chronic illness
should consult their physician before embarking on any weight
loss regimen, including the South Beach Diet.

Bird Flu How To Protect Yourself

November 24th, 2007

Bird Flu is spreading around the world as fast as wild birds
fly. The birds are carrying flu with them as they migrate. They
infect local, non migratory birds that in turn infect local
chickens, ducks, turkeys and so on.

Bird flu is spread to humans primarily by contact with chickens,
ducks and other poultry. But it is also spread by contact with
any other infected birds. So even if you live in the city, the
local pigeons can carry bird flu to your window sill.

Humans appear to become infected with the virus not by eating
infected poultry, but by contacting infected matter or preparing
them for consumption.

Dust and viral particles seem to be a primary cause of human
infection. “We believe those particles are inhaled and that’s
how people become infected.” said Dick Thompson, a spokesman for
the World Health Organization, in Geneva. He added, “It’s very
difficult to stop the movement of this virus now.”

Children are particularly at high risk to bird flu because they
may play where birds carrying bird flu may be found. And it is
not only contact with the infected birds that is a problem.
Feathers and feces carry the bird flu virus. So a child may
contact pigeon feces on a window sill, walk through it on a city
sidewalk, pick up some feathers or play with a neighbors caged
bird.

Likewise you may walk through pigeon or other bird feces and
unknowingly transport bird flu into your home.

The World Health Organization advises that you should not keep
pet birds, you should avoid contact with any live birds, feces,
feathers, waste or dead birds. You should wash your hands and
any clothes that may have come in contact with the bird flu
virus.

They also advise that you remove your shoes outside your house
to prevent bringing any bird flu virus into the house. To clean
your shoes, put plastic bags over your hands, cover your mouth
with a cloth and wear goggles. Clean them with soap and water
before you bring them into the house.

The World Health Organization advises that you do not eat dead
poultry. Now that is a rather amazing warning since it seems
that most people do not eat live chickens. And since many people
in the west buy their chickens, dead, in supermarkets, they are
unable to determine whether the chicken, in a live state had
bird flu or not. They must either take the appropriate cautions
about eating poultry or not eat it at all.

All chicken must be cooked so that there is no pink meat. The
internal temperature must reach at least 70 degrees centigrade
or above. The world health organization says that such meat is
safe to eat.

But the person preparing the food and the preparation area are
at risk from bird flu. So you may prepare the food well, but
contaminate your kitchen with bird flu.

The eggs in your refrigerator can be dangerous. Eggs can also
carry bird flu virus on their shells and inside their shells.
You should wash all eggs before putting them there and if you
break one, you should thoroughly cleanse the area.

The World Health Hrganization says that hard boiled eggs that
have been boiled at least 5 minutes and whose internal
temperature has exceeded 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

Public health officials have recommended that people in regions
known to harbor avian influenza get vaccinated against human
forms of influenza. Practically speaking, the way that it is
spreading, that is everywhere.

There are 4 influenza drugs: amantadine and rimantadine which
help fight certain strains of H5N1 infections, and Tamiflu and
Relenza which are both drugs classified as neuraminidase
inhibitors and are said to help against most strains of H5N1. In
any case, it is wise to note at least the cautions in this
article and adhere to sanitary practices in general.

The World Health Organization has published a great deal of
information about bird flu that it wishes to be spread by NGOs
and the media. This article is written to support that effort.
You are asked to spread this information as far and as wide as
possible. Because sales of antiviral drugs, which might confer
protection, have outpaced manufacturers’ ability to make them,
the information in this article is particularly important, so
please spread the word. Publish it and pass it on to your
friends and family. It may save someone’s life - even your own.

Scaling Down (Almost) Painlessly

November 5th, 2007

Moving to a smaller house or apartment in a retirement community almost always involves a certain degree of trauma, both for the elder who’s moving and for family members. However, by planning ahead you can reduce the discomfort involved and turn what might well become a nightmare into a pleasant event.

Begin by Planning for the Move

Where is the elder moving? Go to the actual house or apartment with tape measure, pad and pencil and write down measurements. Floor space is important, but don’t forget about ceilings. Many elders own large pieces of furniture that may not fit into rooms with low ceilings. Your work here will determine which pieces can move with your elder.

And while you’re at the actual location, talk to several other elders who already live there. What is their life style? Do they go outside the property on frequent trips? How do they dress? Casual lifestyles will require an entirely different style of dress than more formal ones.

Gather Supplies and Contact Helpers

Having all the supplies you will need in one place will speed your task. You’ll want a number of storage bins; five or six should be sufficient to hold sorted items. Plastic bags can be used for discarded belongings and as a container for articles to be donated to charities. Packing boxes and supplies such as padding materials and wide sealing tape are must-haves. Labels and dark marking pens are essential to ensure that boxes go to their intended location.

While you’re in the gathering stage, begin to contact helpers you’ll need. Among these may be:

  • estate sale professionals

  • certified appraisers

  • moving companies

  • house cleaners

  • repair specialists (electricians, plumbers, carpenters, painters)

Ask friends, relatives, and senior real estate specialists for recommendations. Also, check with the Better Business Bureau to ascertain whether problems have been reported about particular companies or individuals.

Approach Your Task One Room at a Time

Who should help? The elder and one family member should assume responsibility for sorting all items and some packing. Do not include everyone in the family if you want to make the job quick and easy because distractions increase in geometric proportion to the number of persons doing the sorting.

Sort all the items in one single room at once, beginning and ending in the kitchen. Why start there? Because kitchens in small houses and apartments typically are short on storage space, and the elder needs time and experience to determine which items are true necessities, and which may never be used. If you reduce kitchen items to a bare minimum at the beginning, your elder can determine what’s needed and what’s not by living with them ahead of time. After living with fewer items, your elder may find that items once thought essential may not be needed. Complete work in the kitchen at the very end of your tasks.

Even though you intend to stay in only one room, distractions will occur. Resist them by stacking items that belong in another room at the door. A bin or box placed just inside the door can contain all the items that have homes elsewhere.

Make your motto One Thing at a Time; One Time for each Thing. Once you’ve picked up an item, decide then and there what its fate should be. Place it in one of the bins you’ve labeled:

  • Discards

  • Donations

  • Distribution to Relatives

  • Keepers

  • Uncertainties

Large collections of books may require their own bins. You might have bins for Collectors’ editions, books to be stored, books to be sold to book dealers.

When you have finished categorizing all the items in the room, start the packing process. Items in the Uncertainties bin can be packed for storage.

If an unbreakable item is to be moved only a short distance, don’t waste time on elaborate packing and padding. Items like crystal and china, however, require excellent packing, regardless of the distance they will be moved. If you can’t do a great job, leave packing fragile items to professionals.

Mark boxes as you go.

Mark boxes as you go.

Mark boxes as you go.

Nothing is more frustrating than finding that you’ve shipped your elder’s bed linens to Aunt Minnie and kept a silver salver you meant to send your nephew.

Don’t try to do everything at once. Do only one room on any given day, and take the time to enjoy reminiscing as you sort items.

This is also the perfect time to have a certified appraiser come in to appraise items that may be of significant value. Very expensive items may be auctioned at an auction house such as Christy’s or Sotheby’s. Less expensive items can be sold to local antiques dealers. By having an idea of their value before going to dealers, you reduce the chance that dealers can scam you.

You could also consider selling items through an on-line auction. If you do so, remember that you will be responsible for shipping items and ensuring their condition to successful bidders.

Distribute Items to the Intended Recipients

Schedule a single day for distribution of items. In-town relatives can come to pick up items intended for them; they may also be helpful by taking bags to charities, books to resellers, boxes to storage, and trash to dumps.

Use this day for shipping as well. Small items can be shipped via UPS or FedEx; large pieces of furniture and antiques may require special handling by movers. Once you’ve finished distribution, you should have a considerably reduced pile of boxes and furniture. These boxes should contain only items to be moved to the elder’s new residence or to storage. Remaining items should be those to be sold in an estate sale.

Move the Elder to His New Residence

Will the mover actually show up on time? Will the mover actually show up at all? Increase the probability of a good outcome for the move by contacting the mover to confirm arrangement a week ahead and the day before the actual move is scheduled. Of course, missed appointments may still occur, but if you’ve checked out the company with the Better Business Bureau and reminded the company of your appointment, the chances are good that the move will go as planned.

Accompany your elder to his new residence and help him with the moving-in process. Even if not all boxes can be emptied in a single day, he will feel more comfortable if a few items that are meaningful to him are unpacked and placed where he can find them.

Hold an Estate Sale

Once the movers have left the premises, the estate sale professionals should come in to evaluate and price items for the estate sale. Give them a key to the house, and then get out of their way. If you have chosen well, these professionals can do a great job of pricing items to sell and clearing the house of whatever remains. They will take a percentage of the sale receipts as compensation.

The days of the sale are good days to keep your elder busy elsewhere. A tearful elder does nothing to help sales.

Schedule a professional cleaning service to clean the house once the estate sale is over. When that has been completed to your satisfaction, turn the keys over to your senior real estate professional and give yourself a big pat on the back. You’re done!

Beyond Creativity

November 4th, 2007

Breaking the rules and following your own are advisable at times to create and innovate your own style and discover things. But before doing so, it is necessary however to know what kind of rules you are trying to break and be familiar with the alternatives that you can substitute from the original ones.

Whew! It is just so fun and exciting to explore and try new stuffs that completely according to your own style. Fulfillment and achievement are just two of the rewards that you can get from having things innovated and discovered.

In catalog design, it has to come a long way from the industry’s downscale origins and jam-packed books. With the latest technology that we have plus the aggressive minds unusual use of typography and color make catalogs really look different and trendy.

Catalogs are important to stand out in today’s ever-crowded and critical mailboxes, bear in mind that being different does not necessarily translate into greater sales and profit. Catalog designers have lone been followed many principles in designing simply to sell products.

What you should know to go beyond your limits. First, always place a best seller in the upper right corner of each spread. Whenever readers glance at a catalog from cover to cover their eyes fall to the upper right corner of a spread, so it is better to put strong product there. So placement of items on the catalog matters a lot.

Second, keep the typography simple and limit the number of typefaces you use. Take note that the catalog must be legible, that means no reducing the type to 6 points to help you cram in all the text. Sometimes some elements of the copy need to be represented in type that is bolder or bigger to emphasize and exaggerate to win a sale.

Third, a catalog must always have an order form. It is essential to include a well-designed order form that was easy to fill out and mail, usually with an attached envelope. It is also advisable to use the form as a worksheet to organize their orders before calling or ordering via the Internet.

Forth, be consistent in layouts for it is a mark of excellence. Developing attractive and unique spreads, icons and typographical elements is important in creating an image. You can use colors, backgrounds, or layout format to break up the overall design and style of the catalog. Your aim is to grab the reader’s attention and encourage them to stop and read its content.

Fifth, standard catalog formats are more profitable. Commonly, unique formats attract more the attention or better enhance your brand than a standard full-size, conventional and slim-Jim catalog. It attracts less people with few or no response at all.

Sixth, a full color catalog performs better than one or two color catalog. Four color presentation looks more attractive, grabs more attention and generates more sales that a dull catalog. The choice lies always on the hand of the seller if he wants to improve his business by breaking and bending the creativity of catalog making and see the difference of your own innovations.

The Hidden Dangers of Childhood Snoring

November 3rd, 2007

Research shows that about one in 10 children habitually snore but your child’s nighttime snoring may be more than just an annoyance–it could be affecting both his physical and psychological health. New studies show that children who snore suffer from poor school performance, may be at higher risk for hyperactivity and are twice as likely to have asthma.

What Causes Childhood Snoring

A number of risk factors are associated with childhood snoring. Some of the most common are:

  • Obesity

  • Parental Smoking
  • Daytime Mouth Breathing

For decades, doctors have recognized the link between obesity and snoring for people of all ages but a 2003 study showed that children with a high body mass index, or a BMI higher than 90% of their peers, were four times more likely to snore than children whose BMIs fell in the normal range. Researchers believe that the heavier necks of obese children press down on the windpipes of sleeping children and lead to increased snoring.

Research has also established a link between snoring and in-home smoking. Children who live with smokers are far more likely to snore than children living in smoke-free environments. As few as 10 cigarettes a day smoked in the home were enough to raise a child’s risk of nighttime snoring.

Excessive or frequent daytime mouth breathing is also a factor in childhood snoring, although the breathing itself doesn’t seem to be the problem. Instead, daytime mouth breathing usually accompanies nasal congestion, which has been proven to increase snoring in adults.

How Snoring Lowers Test Scores

A 2003 German study of 1129 third-grade students found a clear link between snoring and poor academic performance. Most surprising, researchers found that snoring hurts a child’s performance even if hypoxia, or lack of brain oxygen, doesn’t occur. Previously, most doctors had considered snoring without hypoxia harmless.

Not surprising was the finding that the link between snoring and lower test scores became clearer as snoring became for frequent or resulted in apnea. Children who snored habitually had twice the risk of poor school performance and as snoring frequency increased test scores dropped accordingly. The researchers concluded that snoring interfered with the children’s sleep and that the lower quality of sleep ultimately shortened attention spans, increased daytime sleepiness and led to behavioral problems like hyperactivity.

How Snoring is Linked to Asthma

Physicians have long used nighttime coughing as an indicator of early childhood asthma but the findings of a 2003 Australian study suggest that first treating a child’s snoring may help lessen symptoms of this common childhood condition. The study, which looked at nearly 1000 preschool children, found that 42% of the children who snored suffered from asthma and nearly 62% of them had nighttime cough. Among children who rarely or never snored, asthma rates dropped to 26.5% and nighttime cough dropped to 30.5%.

While the research didn’t prove that snoring actually causes asthma, doctors believe that snoring may act as a trigger by forcing upper respiratory mucus (and the allergens it’s captured during the day) to enter the lungs.

What You Can Do about Your Child’s Snoring

There are currently no medical procedures used specifically for nighttime snoring but if the snoring is severe enough to cause apnea, your doctor may recommend a tonsillectomy and an adenoidectomy. Most children usually experience noticeable relief within the first 6 months following their surgeries.

Home treatments for childhood snoring are usually the first approach for most parents. Limiting or eliminating smoking in your home should be a top priority. And encouraging your child to maintain a healthy weight and get adequate rest can be very helpful, as well. Additionally, many children experience at least some relief by switching from back-sleeping to side-sleeping.

Anxiety and Panic Attacks - The Effect of Diet, Fitness, Supplements, and Lifestyle

October 17th, 2007

What you eat and how much you exercise does make a difference to anxiety and panic. Changing your diet will not make a phobia disappear, but it might well make it easier to tackle. I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about diets, reading books by dieticians of all descriptions, and tying different supplements. Some diets I tried were for anxiety, others were for general well-being. Likewise the supplements. The one thing they had in common was to promise much and deliver little. I don’t believe anxiety is caused by bad diet, poor nutrition, and lack of exercise. If it were a lot more people would have anxiety than actually do. Instead, poor diet and little exercise can make you feel worse and therefore are also a sure fire way to make you feel a bit better. You don’t want to feel a bit better, you want to be cured I know. But as I am trying to tell you, a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. And you need to make changes which you control.

So if diets and supplements don’t work, what should you do?

The simple answer is to do what’s best for you. You need to be your own dietician. I found two aspects effected my anxiety levels: blood sugar and indigestion. If you suffer from periods of highs and lows then your blood sugar could be to blame. It is always a good idea to arrange for your doctor to test for diabetes. If you are not diabetic then you would do well to change your diet to include as much low GI foods as possible, and as few high GI foods. If you cut out refined sugars you will probably feel better after sometime, and after a week or two you will probably stop craving them too.

The other important thing I found was that I tended to feel best in the mornings, but that after lunch I felt worse. I felt heavy, lethargic, lacking in energy, and if I had to do anything like go into town I would feel anxious. After sometime I realised that this was down to high carbohydrate meals and over eating. I used to eat until I was full every meal, and each time my stomach got a bit bigger. With all that food to digest I had little energy for anything else and when walking quickly through town as agoraphobics do if they go in town at all, I could end up feeling quite faint and quite sick. Obviously the answer was to get used to eating a whole lot less. In fact I started to get into the habit of eating a good size meal, say a small plate full, and then stopping. if I was still hungry in twenty minutes I could eat a little more. I almost never did. The difference it made to my energy levels was spectacular.

I don’t think you should go on a very low carbohydrate diet. In my experience people tend to feel worse and more anxious. But if you were to cut out the majority of bread you eat, say keeping it down to a couple of slices a day, and concentrated more on eating vegetables, you would probably feel better. Remember, unless your doctor tells you otherwise you are not allergic to wheat. Wheat allergies are very rare, wheat intolerance is quite common. But wheat intolerance is something of a symptom of stress, not a cause. That is why I say you should cut down on high carbohydrate foods, not cut them out completely.

I don’t think anxiety can be helped or cured by supplements. In my experience they are an expensive waste of time. They certainly won’t do anything for phobias. If you eat a balanced diet you get everything you need, and you can use your diet to control your mood and energy levels. And control is good.

As with diet, revolutionising your fitness regime will not cure your anxiety but can make you feel better. You should always check with your healthcare professional before starting or changing an exercise regime. The idea is not to bulk up like the Incredible Hulk, nor to be as thin as a long distance runner. It’s just about increasing your general fitness levels, and toning up your muscles a bit. Some “experts” are inclined to go on about body oxygen levels and brain chemistry. They may be right but I would be inclined to stick to tangibles. As your fitness increases you will find you sleep a bit better and have an improved body image. You will also have more energy and feel calmer.

So, how should you get fit? This is not going to be a fad, it’s going to be part of your lifestyle forever. For this reason you need to chose something you enjoy and can enjoy in all weathers. I chose cycling because I don’t mind cycling in the rain. A brisk walk each day is good, as is a competitive sport. It’s really up to you, just do something! The warm up is also essential, so don’t forget that.

Some people find that exercise causes them to hyperventilate and feel anxious or panicky. If this is the case then start slowly and build up extra gradually. Walking would be a good exercise to chose. If it’s a really big problem, if you have effectively got a phobia to getting out of breath, you can lay off the exercise until you have completed the rest of the programme.

Here is the fitness regime that I followed. I did ONE of the following each day.

Either:

A brisk walk for forty minutes, including hills.

Or:

A one hour bike ride, including long periods in the highest gear and standing up. I made sure the route included some hills.

Or:

A circuit training workout

I used this technique to exercise in my room at home with minimal materials. I selected ten types of exercise (listed below, but of course you can chose your own.) I did each activity for 45 seconds then had a 45 second rest. At the end of the list I repeated it once. That took the total workout time to thirty minutes.

1) Press-ups

2) Sit-ups

3) Squat-Thrusts

4) High Kicks (remember not to strain yourself too much or push too far.)

5) Hard shadow boxing on toes.

6) Jumping the rope (With a pretend rope!)

7) Kicks to the side.

8) Weights (Remember to use light weights, this is not about bulking-up).

9) Shadow boxing again.

10) More weights.

I can’t stress enough that you should exercise at your own pace, stop if anything hurts or feels strained, and speak to your doctor before you start exercising. But everyone who is medically capable should be exercising and you will feel better.
When it comes to diet and fitness you shouldn’t think about a cure for your problems. Instead see them as a first step to taking control. As you start to take pride in your healthier regime your self esteem will also benefit. See it as a foundation.

Look out for my follow up articles where I discuss other issues to getting over anxiety, panic attacks and phobias.

I am an ex-anxiety sufferer campaigning against expensive gimmicks targeted at vulnerable anxiety sufferers by cynical businessmen. I set up http://www.anxiety2calm.com to examine various therapies, techniques and gimmicks sold as a cure for anxiety, panic attacks and phobias. I also have sections on meditation, EFT / TFT
, Journey Therapy, and much much more.

Correlation between sex drives and anything else in life

September 29th, 2007

Sex is important in every relationship to work. It is through
sharing this act of love that two people learn to trust each
other and love each other more. It is hard to stay in a
relationship where there is no sex. Usually, marriages do not
work out because they lack sexual drives or have non-existent
sex lives. That is the reason why many people are coming up with
answers to boost sex drives of people. Sex is the answer to many
problems that are affecting people of today.

Recent studies have shown that more and more married couples
have less and less sex when as they grow old. This is the secret
that has been tearing families and relationships apart. At the
age of 40, average men usually lose their sex drives. Most of
them also acquire Erectile Dysfunction. This is the inability of
a man to have or maintain an erection needed for sex. As a
result, they do not have sex.

It is no secret that people who have frequent sex live longer,
healthier, and happier lives. The reason for this is sex is one
of the sports really works. It is better than swimming 20 laps a
day.

A sexual act can also help burn up the calories that have been
stored in the body of people. This will make them slimmer
because they have regular exercise.

When a man cannot have sex, it usually leads to mild depression
cases. The reason for this is that they consider their penises
as their source of masculinity. When they are not able to have
an erection, they feel that they have lost their manhood.
Because of this, they become introverts. They also ruin their
relationships with their families because of this.

Studies have shown that the effect of having an increased sex
drive is evident in any part of a human being’s life. When they
have sex regularly, their skin colors glow as a sign that they
are satisfied and happy with their lives. Men who also have sex
regularly tend to become more successful in their work careers.
The reason is simple, they are happy with their lives that they
do not bring their problems in the office.

To be able to increase your sex drive, it is always important to
star with yourself. Couples should make sure that they keep the
fire burning in their relationship. A boost in sexual drive is
always important, but to have sex, all you need is passion.
Passion is important because it is the reason why kids are born
out of love.

When you have a problem in your sex life, admit it. If
necessary, use medicine that will boost your sexual drives.
There are a lot of natural supplements in the market such as
penis pills. It is never wrong to admit you both have a problem
in your sexual life.

Couples who maintain their sex lives are the usual people whose
relationships last for a long time. No matter what problems they
have encountered, they will stick together and face the
harshness in lives as one. h
